Back to School and University with a Linky

Amanda became one of the school's prefects this year and her big sisters, Jessica and Samantha, are both back at university. A school year in South Africa falls in a calendar year, and the summer break is from December to January. With the pandemic, the schools and universities are starting later than usual.

I need to explain what a prefect is since it's not a term used everywhere. In fact, spellcheck thinks I have made a mistake. Prefects are chosen by their peers and teachers. They are mini leaders who represent the school and assist the teachers and their fellow pupils. Amanda has already been working hard as a hall and recess monitor, among other tasks. She has even been given charge of a class a couple of times when a teacher was absent for that period, once it was her own class and another time a class of younger kids. She is expected to maintain discipline and to be a good role model. Thankfully, she's well-liked so the kids haven't given her a hard time.

Jessica is in res in Cape Town and a student at the University of Cape Town. Samantha is in res in Stellenbosch and attends the Stellenbosch University. Our son is working as a shift leader at an IT company in Durbanville Hills, outside of Cape Town. We are proud of all four of our kids!

A Christmas Feast and a Linky

Almost every Christmas holiday we spend it with my in-laws at their beachfront home. We are blessed by the pristine location, good food, and family time. My mother-in-law always puts on a feast and the grandkids take turns assisting her in the kitchen. The photos begin with breakfast, then the appetizer, followed by the main meal, and ending with dessert.

The kids got some new clothes for Christmas, which they modeled for me. Amanda also got the complete Narnia series with colorful illustrations bound in one hardcover book by her brother, Jeremiah. He has fond memories of me reading all seven books to them (the three big kids) when they were young. Amanda has already started it, but I have assured him that I will read to her too.

The summer holiday has come to an end for Amanda. It began December 4 and ended today. Tomorrow she starts Grade 6. It's supposed to get to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but will feel like 104, and there isn't any central air-conditioning. Last year her class was the only one not to even have a fan! Hopefully tomorrow won't be too tough. We will only know who her teacher is and who is in her class tomorrow. There are 2 English classes and 2 Afrikaans classes for every grade. The kids have to learn both languages, but they get taught in their preferred language. Amanda learns British spelling, but I usually stick to American on my blog, since I am American and most of my readers are from the States.

Sisters Studying in the Sun and a Linky

Since we live in South Africa, below the Equator, our seasons are opposite to the Northern Hemisphere. This past weekend we hit 40°C (104°F) two days in a row, which is unexpectedly early to get such hot days. Our girls decided to sit by the pool on Saturday morning before it got too hot to study for their final exams. Jessica is in her second year at university and Samantha is in her final year at high school. Typically, the school year ends early December and the new school year begins mid-January.
