Bar scam: ‘Nothing unusual’ in the procedure, says Mani
KOTTAYAM: Putting up a brave face, Finance Minister K M Mani, whose statement was taken by avVigilance team in connection with the bar bribery scam, on Saturday said there was “nothing unusual” in the procedure.
“There is nothing unusual. When there is a case, it is necessary to present one’s statement. This was an opportunity for that,” he told reporters in Kottayam.
Meanwhile, dismissing the vigilance probe against Mani, opposition leader V S Achuthanandan said it was a “mere farce.”
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had assured the state assembly that no vigilance official, part of the team probing the case, would be transferred. However, that was not so as Vigilance ADGP Jaocb Thomas had reportedly been removed, the veteran Marxist leader said.
A Vigilance team probing the bar bribe scam had last night taken a statement from Mani, against whom an FIR had been filed at the Vigilance court in Thrissur.
The FIR was registered by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau on the basis of a complaint by VS after an initial probe found prima facie evidence against the Minister.
VS had filed the complaint following charges made by Biju Ramesh, Working 1 President of the Kerala Bar Hotel Owners Association, in November last that Rs crore had been paid as bribe to Mani for a favourable decision on re-opening of closed bars.

Case should not have taken against me, says Mani
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Finance Minister K M Mani said a case should not have registered against me in the bar case. There was no situation to take a case legally and morally, he told reporters here.
Mani said, “I’m not asking to register case against other ministers. I am innocent in the bar case. As my hands are pure, I don’t have any complaint towards anyone. The people will decide whether taking a case in my name is double standard or not. The people is of the opinion that there are two types of justice in the case. There is conspiracy in the case and it is being unravelled now.”
Some are against me continuing in the post. I am an MLA elected by the people. The UDF made me a minister, I have some responsibilities and I want to accomplish all that.
Action against Chief Whip P C George can be delayed by a day but a decision should be taken, said Mani.

Reservation in recruiting aided staff: Open-minded discussion soon, says Mani
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State Finance Minister K M Mani said that the matter regarding giving reservation in the recruitment of aided teaching and non-teaching staff shall be discussed by the government with an open mind.
He added that this matter should be discussed jointly by the ruling and opposition fronts.
CPM politburo member and former education minister M A Baby had introduced the matter of reservation.
Mani said that the logic behind introducing a matter which the LDF government could not materialise during its five-year tenure should be considered.
Mani was inaugurating the function held by Kerala Kaumudi to commemorate K Sukumaran, the founder editor of the daily, on his 31st death anniversary.

Party killed Balu in revenge, says Mani
IDUKKI: After putting the CPI-M in Kerala in the dock by his controversial speech that it had eliminated political foes in the past, party leader M.M. Mani has once again purportedly made a similar claim embarrassing the party further.
Addressing a meeting, organised by the CPI-M at Adimali Pathamile in Idukki district Friday evening, Mani said the party was responsible for the murder of a local leader of the Congress's trade union wing INTUC some years ago.
The audio of the speech purportedly made by Mani was broadcast by Malayalam television channels Saturday.
He said that the party had killed Balu in 2004 to avenge the death of Ayyappadas.
Though the case had been investigated and the accused punished, now there were moves to implicate him by reviving it, he said.
But Mani denied the party’s role in the murder of Ancheri Baby.
Mani also took at a dig at CPI state secretary Panniayan Raveendran, saying the left ally had acted like a betrayer in time of the CPI (M)'s distress.
Mani then went on to allude to certain episodes of folklore of north Kerala to suggest that despite being an ally CPI had sought to deceive CPI (M) when it was in trouble.
Mani was removed as CPI-M Idukki district secretary a couple of months ago and later dropped from the state committee for his speech at Thodupuzha that the party had physically eliminated its foes in the area in the 1980s.
Based on Mani's "revelation" police ordered fresh probe in these cases and criminal charges were framed against Mani and some other CPI-M leaders in Idukki district.
His speech could not have come at a worse time for the CPI-M as it was grappling with the fallout of the murder of marxist rebel and Revolutionary Marxist Party leader T P Chandrasekharan in May this year with several of its leaders arrested in connection with the case.
Decision not taken to hike pension age, says Mani
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A decision has not been taken to hike the pension age, said Finance Minister K M Mani. A decision has also not been taken to introduce contributory pension for new government employees, informed Mani. It will be taken only after holding discussions with youth organisations.
Mani said this while replying to the adjournment motion moved by the opposition LDF seeking a discussion on the pension age hike. The opposition boycotted the assembly after the speaker denied permission for the motion.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said pension is an additional liability for the government and it is badly affecting developmental activities and chances for employment. The government has so far not taken a decision in raising the pension age. A decision to introduce contributory pension will be taken only after holding talks.

However, the exact date for the presentation of the budget will be decided by the cabinet, he added. After a three-day discussion, other formalities including Vote on Account would be completed before March 31, he said.
