2011 Kerala Assembly Name of the Cabinet Minister and Portfolios

The Congress-led UDF ministry in Kerala ran into rough weather with Indian Union Muslim League, unilaterally announcing five nominees from the party to the ministry against four berths allotted to it by Congress.
Announcing the decision Panakkad Hyder Ali Shihab Thangal, IUML state president informed his party has demanded one more minister berth and Manjalamkuzhi Ali would be a minister, if the UDF accepts the demand. The other ministers are MK Muneer (Social welfare and Panchayat), VK Ibrahim Kunju (PWD), PK Abdu Rabb ( Education). PK Kunhalikutty would handle industries, IT and urban development ministires.
Meanwhile Kerala Congress (M) leader, KM Mani informed that they would stick on to their demand for three ministerial berths in the Oommen Chandy cabinet. Mani was responding to the Muslim League’s list of four Ministers including surprise inclusion of Manjalamkuzhi Ali for the parliamentary affairs.
Speaking to the reporters here on Sunday, Mani added that the decision on the posts of Speaker, deputy speaker and Parliamentary affairs was finalized at the UDF meeting held earlier.
The UDF came to power with a wafer-thin majority by winning 72 seats in the 140-member Kerala Assembly. IUML has 20 MLAs, while Kerala Congress(M) has nine. Both Kerala Congress(M) and IUML have been demanding the post parliamentary affairs minister. There is strong demand from within Congress as well for the post.

Saturday, May 21, 2011: The names of the nine Congress nominees, who will join the Oommen Chandy ministry would be announced today.
PK Jayalakshmi, the lone women Congress MLA is sure to be a minister along with Aryadan Mohamed, Adoor Prakash,K Babu, KC Joseph and AP Anilkumar. The high command would decide on accommodating K Muraleedharan, Sivakumar and CN Balakrishnan.
Jayalakshmi, whose candidature was backed by none other than AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi, is the only woman candidate in the UDF who made it to the Assembly. She also belongs to the Kurichya tribal community. The 28yearold from Thavinjal in Wayanad, has a bachelor’s degree from Kannur University and diploma in computer application.

May 17, 2011: Senior Congress leader Ommen Chandy will be sworn in Kerala Chief Minister tomorrow bringing back the UDF rule by a wafer thin majority. Along with Chandy, P K Kunhalikutty (IUML), K M Mani (KC-M), K P Mohan (SJD), T M Jacob (KC-J), K B Ganesh Kumar (KC-B) and Shibu Baby John (RSP-B), partners of the United Democratic Front, will also be sworn in at 2 pm.

This was announced by UDF convener PP Thankachan at a press meeting held here on Tuesday. Muslim League faction will be provided with four ministerial berths and Kerala Congress (Mani) faction with two ministerial berths.

KC (Mani) faction will be handling - Finance, Law, Housing and Water resources. PK Kunhalikutty- Industries. TM Jacob will be handling- Food and Civil supplies, Ports. KP Mohanan- Agriculture, Dairy development and Animal husbandry. Shibu Baby John- Labour and Employment. KB Ganesh Kumar- Tourism.

They will be administered oath of office and secrecy by Governor R S Gavai at a ceremony to be held at the Raj Bhavan lawns, UDF sources said. The rest of the ministers would be sworn in on May 23rd.

The Ministry will be expanded later after finalising the list of Congress members to be included in consultation with the party’s central leadership.

UDF captured power in the state defeating the Left Democratic Front by a margin of 72-68 in the 140-member Assembly in a photo-finish in the April 13 elections.
