Foundation Day

Last Tuesday was 网爆门事件鈥檚 annual Foundation Day. We recognised this important day with a full school assembly in the gymnasium. We also welcomed back many special guests who helped build our College including Life Governors and past staff. The event is a celebration of the school, recognising where we have been and showcasing the present. It is also a significant occasion for our Preps as it is the first full school assembly they attend. They were welcomed by being presented with their House badges by our senior students.

Our Foundation Day guest speaker was 1985 网爆门事件 School Captain, Mr Cameron Ashe AIM. Cameron has had a very successful career in national intelligence and is currently the Deputy Director General of the Australian Signals Directorate, which is Australia鈥檚 intelligence agency responsible for signals and cyber intelligence. Such has been Cameron鈥檚 contribution to this area that this year he was recognised with the Australian Intelligence Medal at the Australia Day Honours. Cameron spoke fondly of his time at the College and encouraged all our students to consider the many options possible for them post school.

Student Achievements

So far in second term, we have had students achieve a very high level in a range of areas.

Congratulations to all of our students who represented 网爆门事件 as part of the victorious SEISA athletics team in the competition at Casey Fields on 3 May. Last year was the first time 网爆门事件 had won a major sports carnival. So to defend that title this year, by the slender margin of 5 points over St Pauls, was a wonderful achievement.

Our surfers also performed exceptionally well at the recent Surfing Victoria State Independent School Titles. Our mixed team came third and our girls' team placed first amongst Victorian independent schools 鈥 yet again showing the depth of surfing talent at our school.

I would also like to congratulate all those involved in the very successful production of Little Shop of Horrors at the Wonthaggi Arts Centre. The production was a glittering showcase of the performing arts talent at the College. My special thanks to Director Karen Milkins-Hendry, Musical Director Matt Goss, and all of the staff and volunteers who brought this production to life. Special recognition to our wonderfully talented students who made up the cast and members of the orchestra. They were simply outstanding.

Mother's and Grandmother's Lunch

Our inaugural Mother鈥檚 and Grandmother鈥檚 Lunch was a great success, attracting over 90 mums who were in great spirits at the Phillip Island Winery. All in attendance were entertained by musical items from two of our wonderfully talented young singers, Cecily de Gooyer (Year 11) and Aoife O鈥機onnell (Year 10). It was particularly pleasing to see a number of grandmothers travel from Melbourne for the lunch. My thanks to the PFA for their support of this event. We look forward to this becoming a regular part of the College calendar on the Friday before Mother鈥檚 Day each year.

All of the topics above are highlighted throughout this newsletter.

Foundation Day Assembly

On Tuesday this week, the whole school came together, along with Leadership, members of our College Board and Life Governors, students, staff and families, for the most important day on our College calendar. 网爆门事件 Foundation Day gives us the chance to celebrate our school, our past and what makes our school special.

It was wonderful to welcome so many dignitaries to our school, many of whom took a tour around the school grounds after assembly to see how far we have come.

The celebrations included an address by Mr Cameron Ashe, 1985 alumni and College Captain. Since leaving school, Cameron has lead an interesting life working in national intelligence. Cameron is currently the Deputy Director General of the Australian Signals Directorate - Australia鈥檚 intelligence agency responsible for signals and cyber intelligence. Cameron was also awarded The Australian Intelligence Medal (AIM), a civil decoration awarded to national intelligence community members for distinguished service. Year 12 student Shannon Harvie was so taken by Cameron's speech, he sought him out after the assembly to ask about joining national intelligence.

Mr Jason Scott, Deputy Principal and Head of Senior School, who will be retiring at the end of term, presented to those in attendance about 网爆门事件's unique 'vibe'. Jason refers to his address in the Senior School section of this newsletter.

Student leaders were given the opportunity to present to assembly, with College Captains Max Arceo and Alice Mabilia, Middle School Captains Amara Pittorino and Finn Campbell Walker presented to those present. Junior School Captains Edward Lee and Chloe Shapardon presented a thank you gift to guest speaker Cameron Ashe. Middle and Senior House Leaders awarded the Preps with their house badges, the first exciting opportunity for the preps to get up onto the assembly stage.

Proceedings were punctuated by musical performances by our Junior School and Combined Choirs, our school orchestra and the cast of Little Shop of Horrors and Marchioness - Archie Robson and Nissa Campbell Walker supported by Eve Oakley, Isaac Savona, Finn Campbell Walker and Music Teacher Rob Turton.

Our annual Foundation Day assembly celebrated everything our school should be proud of, leadership, involvement, encouragement and music!

Newhaven College Mother's Day Lunch

The 网爆门事件 inaugural Mother鈥檚 Day lunch at Phillip Island Winery was a highlight of the week for many, with over 90 guests in attendance. Principal Tony Corr welcomed all in attendance, followed by stunning entertainment from singers Year 11 student Cecily de Gooyer and Year 10 student Aifoe O鈥機onnell, supported by piano teacher Pam Christie. The atmosphere was one of happy congeniality, celebration and love for the special women in our lives.

The College thanks Phillip Island Winery, the PFA and everyone involved in making this such a special Mother鈥檚 Day celebration.

Little Shop of Horrors

Our incredible School Production drew to a close on Sunday 5 May, at Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre. The cast, crew, musicians and supporters are now getting their lives back to normal. It has been a phenomenal amount of work for everyone involved and we applaud their success!

Year 12 students Jemima Aitken and Dean Lyle played the lead roles of Audrey and Seymour who navigate their way to find love with the unlikely assistance of a man-eating plant, Audrey II. Dean is no stranger to 网爆门事件 productions, having played Shrek and King Triton in previous shows. This was Jemima鈥檚 first time in a lead role for a 网爆门事件 production. Other superb performances came from Year 10 student Felix Fothergill as Mr Mushnik, the owner of the flower shop. Audrey II was portrayed with magnificent puppetry and voiced by Year 12 powerhouse singer Angeline Anthony. Audrey鈥檚 very unpleasant, and ultimately doomed, boyfriend was flamboyantly played by Year 12 student Liam Fuery.

The street urchins sing and dance their way through the entire show, keeping the storyline going with unbridled enthusiasm. The urchins were performed by Indigo Aurora, Meyanna Christensen, Cecily de Gooyer, Isabel Goss, Eve Oakley and Aoife O鈥機onnell. Other pivotal roles were played by Matilda Abraham-Williams, Mackenzie Cameron, Archie Robson, Shae Foster and Giacinta Lyle. With the support of a highly energetic ensemble cast, the show was rich in talent from the youngest student up.

Talented students were also found in the music pit with Year 8 student Finn Campbell Walker (keyboards), Year 9 student Flynn Dengerink (guitar) and Year 11 student Gabriel Di Falco (bass) playing crucial roles in the orchestra, creating the mood for the whole show. College VET students constructed the sets, which further set the dour mood of the skid row background to the story.

Director Karen Milkins-Hendry and Musical Director Matthew Goss worked together with volunteers, professionals and creators to bring together an incredible show.

Mothers' Day Stall

The Mothers' Day stall was held on Thursday, 9 May 2024 and it was great to see the excitement of the students when they purchased gifts for their loved ones. We hope each gift recipient loved their gift as much as the students!

I'd like to personally thank each of the volunteers that helped with our Mothers' Day stall: Jenni Lewandowski, Kay Kondarios, Chantelle Manallack, Lisette Rule, Denise Dillan and Matt Brown.

Each child that purchased a gift received a raffle ticket for one of two amazing hampers that each included a $50 voucher generously donated by Saltwater. Our lucky winners, drawn by our principal Tony Corr, were:

1st prize: Olivia Clark (Year 4M)

2nd prize: Lucy Thompson (Year 7A)

Mothers' Day Lunch

Like many other mums and grandmothers, the members of the PFA attended the Mothers' Day lunch at Phillip Island Winery on Friday 10 May. Mother's Day Celebrations in the Junior School

The 鈥楳uffins and Mums鈥 morning was a great success, with mums, aunties, grandparents, and special guests attending. The children beamed with pride, and it was lovely to see our 网爆门事件 community come together to celebrate this special day on our calendar. Thank you to all who were able to come and share this very special morning with teachers and our Junior School children. Lots of photos are shared below.

Our last Junior School assembly showed our Grade 3 students celebrating Mother's Day with heartwarming words, a brief history of the occasion, and a beautiful song dedicated to the incredible female figures in children's lives. Well done to our Grade 3 cohort!

Respectful Relationships Program

We strive to foster a culture of respect and equality across the entire school community. This term, our Junior School teachers have implemented a new program called Respectful Relationships. This weekly program addresses various topics that promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours. The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning materials have been designed for teachers in primary and secondary schools to develop students鈥 social, emotional and positive relationship skills. Efforts to promote social and emotional skills and positive gender norms in children and young people has been shown to improve health related outcomes and wellbeing.

E-Safety Initiative

In our Year 3 and Year 4 classrooms, we have been implementing eSafety technology lessons to educate, inform and promote online safety. Parents can also access this resource to support their child's digital education at home. These lessons teach crucial skills, promote safe online behaviours, and provide guidance for parents, teachers and students in dealing with cyber safety issues. We encourage parents to explore this valuable resource - it's free and incredibly helpful. .

Junior School Choir

Our Junior School Choir boasts nearly 70 enthusiastic students who gather weekly for practice. Led by Nina Prideaux, with Carmel Slater on piano, the choir fill the assembly area on Wednesday afternoons with beautiful melodies. Congratulations to the Junior School Choir on a strong performance at our Foundation Day Assembly. It was wonderful to see our students perform the National Anthem and 'Lizzy' was a huge hit鈥 Splendiferous! More photos can be found in 'College News' in this newsletter.

Prep House Badges

At the Foundation Day Assembly, our Prep students proudly received their house badges, marking a special milestone for them. It was wonderful to witness our youngest members join the entire school community in their first Foundation Day Assembly.

See photos of our proud Preps under the Foundation Day article in 'College News'.

Cross Country Success

Last week's Junior School Cross Country was yet another successful event! The weather was ideal, the children's enthusiasm was contagious, and parental support was unwavering. Special thanks to Matt Jackson for his organisation. We were very proud of each and every student who participated and competed in this event.

There are lots of Cross Country photos in the Sport section of this newsletter.

Class Values Award

Congratulations to Prep A for earning the highest number of values keys, clinching the Class Values Award at our recent Assembly! In celebration of their achievement, Prep A enjoyed popcorn and a movie last Friday. Well done to Prep A for their outstanding efforts!

Foundation Day Assembly

The Foundation Day Assembly honoured 网爆门事件's journey since 1980, recognising its growth and milestones. Students, parents and staff were celebrated for their contributions to the college's success. Mr. Scott, Head of Senior School and Vice Principal, highlighted the unique 'vibe' of 网爆门事件, emphasising community and a variety of opportunities for students. The assembly provided a moment of reflection on the past achievements, the current successes and the future aspirations of 网爆门事件. It reinforced the commitment to fostering a learning environment that nurtures holistic development and prepares students for the challenges and opportunities ahead. A full report of the event and photos can be found in the 'College News' section of this newsletter.

Middle School Safety Survey

Recently, we conducted a comprehensive safety survey in Middle School, reaffirming our commitment to nurturing the wellbeing and educational growth of our students. Our primary goal is to create a school environment where every student feels safe, valued and empowered to learn and grow.

The survey data revealed a crucial area that requires our attention: social and emotional learning. It is evident that fostering respectful relationships and positive attitudes among students is paramount for a healthy school culture.

Staff will explore the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning materials designed for teachers in primary and secondary schools to develop students鈥 social, emotional and positive relationship skills. Parents can also access the E-Safety resource to support their child's digital education at home. .

As educators and caregivers, it's essential that we engage in open discussions with our students about the importance of demonstrating respect towards others, both in-person and online. We must empower them to confront and call out unacceptable behaviours and language, whether it be in the classroom, playground, outside of school or on social media platforms.

When these things do occur, we want to work with the students to improve their behaviour and truly understand their impact on others. Furthermore, we appreciate the support from parents in working with us and trusting our processes.

Students have the right to come to school feeling safe and happy, knowing that their voices will be heard, and their concerns addressed. By instilling a culture of respect and accountability, we can create a supportive environment conducive to learning and personal development.

Rest assured that we will follow up with individual students and their parents from the data collected.

Let's work together to build a school community where kindness, empathy and inclusivity thrive, paving the way for a brighter future for all our students

JASON SCOTT
Vice Principal & Head of Senior School

Foundation Day is one of the most important days on our calendar and I am very appreciative and honoured that Tony Corr invited me to give an address to an audience that included life governors, members of the Board of Directors, students, parents and staff. I was thrilled to see Michael Brewin (pictured below with myself and Life Governor Penny Manning) in the audience as he was Principal when I was appointed as Vice-Principal in 2010.

As this was my final Foundation Day assembly before retirement, I took the opportunity to try to identify the unique feature of 网爆门事件, that makes it such a wonderful place for students and staff. Using the image of 鈥榃here鈥檚 Wally鈥 and Dennis Denuto from The Castle I searched for 鈥榯he vibe鈥. In preparation, I had sought answers from students and staff from across the College. Their Newhaven vibes included the relaxed atmosphere created by the unique coastal location, the many and varied opportunities to pursue what you love most, the connectedness to the natural environment through our stunning 83-acre site with geese and wallabies, and the inclusive and friendly students and staff.

Trying to find and describe the unique personality was like the scene from The Castle when Dennis Denuto, a suburban lawyer is trying to help Darryl Kerrigan  save his home from the airport developers. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the vibe of it. It鈥檚 the constitution. It鈥檚 Mabo. It鈥檚 justice. It鈥檚 law. It鈥檚 the vibe and ah, no that鈥檚 it. It鈥檚 the vibe鈥 says Denuto.

Eventually, after 鈥榮earching for Wally鈥, I came to the conclusion that, for me, the Newhaven vibe is embedded in the last line at the end of each verse of the school song; All through life, heart and mind hold the key. That is, the special ingredient that we experience everyday at the College is the importance of both the heart and the mind, and neither is more important than the other; at Newhaven we pursue both with passion.

Vice Principal and Head of Senior School

Year 12 Society Function

The Society Function was a wonderful opportunity for Year 12 students to dress up and enjoy a social evening with their friends and teachers. Held in the Performing Arts Wing, the evening commenced with everyone enjoying some fancy finger food and mocktails served by Year 10 & 11 volunteer waiters. We then moved into the Black Box Theatre to listen to our three guest speakers; Dylan Beck (2020 College Captain), Meg Hynes (2019 College Captain) and Millie Thomas (2017 Academic Captain).

The Alumni students spoke about their journey after graduating from Newhaven and where their studies and travels have taken them. They offered their advice to the Year 12 students as they head into their final semester of secondary school and are considering their future careers and vocations. It was great to hear from Dylan, Meg and Millie talk about their experiences at Newhaven and how this has shaped their decisions and pathways. Dylan is currently completing his Honours in Psychology and hoping to be accepted into his Masters next year. Meg is in her final year of Environmental Science at Monash and Millie is in her final year of Medicine.

The presentations and 鈥楺 & A鈥 covered topics including choosing your university course, shared housing, budgeting, travel and cooking for yourself.

Year 10 Work Experience Program

Our flexible approach to Work Experience allows students to customise their work experience placement at a time that is mutually convenient for the employer and student.

Year 10 student, Fletcher Driscoll recently completed Work Experience with Victoria Police and was based at the Wonthaggi Police Station for five days. During his time on placement, Fletcher visited crime scenes, completed case work and undertook school and community visits. He was able to work across a range of departments and teams including the family violence and detective units.

From this experience, Fletcher is now absolutely committed to achieving his goal of joining the police force.

SEISA Music Festival

Last Thursday we had over 30 Newhaven students and staff participate in SEISA Music Festival 2024 at Beaconhills Berwick. Our students combined with SEISA Schools to create a choir of just over 60 students, and a similar orchestral force, with a total of around 150 students from across the SIESA schools. For the first time in SEISA history, there was a SIESA Big Band. This was a great addition to the concert program. We are very proud of Finn Campbell Walker (Piano) and Gabriel di Falco (Bass) for their performance with the SEISA Big Band.

Throughout the day, our choristers got to work with tutors from the Australian School of Performing Arts, preparing some wonderful music. This included the traditional Torres Strait Island tune 鈥楽esere Eeye鈥 and the classic 鈥楲anterns鈥 by Birds of Tokyo. The choir sounded amazing and featured several soloists with Newhaven represented by Aoife O鈥機onnell and Cecily de Gooyer.

A feature of SEISA Music Festivals is the soloist section. This provides each school with the opportunity to feature one of their most talented performers. For 网爆门事件, we were delighted to have Cecily de Gooyer represent the College. Cecily sang a moving rendition of the piece 鈥楽omewhere鈥 from Westside Story by Leonard Bernstein. Well done to, Cecily!

SEISA Music this year was a great success. If you would like to be invited next year, be sure to be involved in the Middle School Choir, Senior Vocal Ensemble, Senior Strings, Big Band or Concert Band. The students and staff were rapt to celebrate a wonderful performance with a quick trip to the golden arches on the way home.

Well done to all involved.

Prep- Year 6 House Cross Country

Our Preps-Year 6s were out on the trail Wednesday last week, giving it their all for their House Cross Country.

Parents and friends came along to cheer on our students from all year levels as they ran around the oval or further afield.

There was lots of colour, celebration and encouragement from the whole of Junior School.

Thank you to the Year 9 students who assisted along the track.

Year 5/6 District Soccer

On Friday 10 May our fearless 5/6's sent two teams to battle it out with Primary Schools across the District.

Both Teams made a fine start, winning their first games convincingly. The Girls went on to win their remaining Pool matches to be Pool winners and advance to the Finals. The Boys came close in their second, losing out to Newhaven Primary School. This meant that the Boys needed to win their final Pool match to advance to the Finals. Stunning goals from Blair and Jordy showed the teamwork and footballing skills of the Boys, however they just missed out to Our Lady Star of The Sea.

We all gathered to watch the Girls鈥 Final 鈥 as they took on Bass Valley Primary School. A free flowing match ensued, but ultimately the Girls came second on the day. It was a wonderful day of teamwork, encouragement, resilience and enjoyment which meant both Teams had a very successful day out.

Massive thanks to the teachers on the day.

Melbourne Schools MTB Competition

On 26 April our MTB team headed off to Redhill for the Melbourne Schools MTB Competition. We had one podium finish on the day with Jack Middleton in Year 11 taking a second place. There were no overall school standings released however we did have a solid presence amongst the 34 schools that were represented on the day.

Our best in each category;

Juniors (7&8), Maxen Mills, 9th out of 108 entrants

Intermediates (9&10), Ethan Tilley 20th, out of 54 entrants

Seniors (11&12), Jack Middleton 2nd , from 7 entrants

A positive day and the first event for a few of the boys which was great.

Ella shows them how it's done!

Year 8 student Ella Lomax (Sambell) ran in the 鈥楻unning Wild Darby River' trail run at Wilson Promontory on 5 May and came first for the 7.5 km race in 42.52mins.

Due to a delay in placing the return marker, Ella ended running further than required but still came first in her category.

Well done Ella

Join our walk for National Reconciliation - Now More Than Ever!

Newhaven College welcomes all parents and friends, as part of The 网爆门事件 Family, to join our students and staff as we make the Long Walk as part of reconciliation on Tuesday 28 May from 9.10am-10.10am.

Wednesday 15 May was National Families Day on The First Nations Calendar. The notion of family in Aboriginal culture is closely tied to themes of connectedness and kinship. Ultimately, family and kinship are a cohesive force that bind Aboriginal people together. With over 500 Indigenous nations across Australia, there exists a vast array of Aboriginal communities. These nations are often made up of clan groups, and within these clan groups are family groups that often share a kinship system and common language.

On 21 November 2004 Michael Long decided that something needed to be done about the plight of his people. He embarked on an historic trek, walking from his home in the suburbs of Melbourne all the way to Parliament House in Canberra 鈥 more than 650 kilometres away to with meet with Prime Minister John Howard to discuss his concerns.

National Reconciliation Week commences on the anniversary of the 1967 referendum and ends on Mabo Day. It鈥檚 a time for people to reflect on reconciliation in Australia, 鈥渢he restoration of friendly relations鈥.

The week is about non-Indigenous people taking responsibility for building stronger, more respectful relationships with First Nations communities. It鈥檚 about being better allies, by recognising First Nations people as the sovereign and original people of this place we call home.

The theme for this year鈥檚 Reconciliation Week is 'Now More Than Ever'!

Celebrating IDAHOBIT

We possess a profound ability to shape our children's attitudes and beliefs, embedding values of acceptance, inclusivity, and respect for all.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), celebrated each year on May 17th, emphasises

the critical need to educate children about diversity and inclusivity. Inaugurated in 2004 by the World Health Organization, this day is a global call to promote tolerance and combat discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community.

Instilling respect and acceptance for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in children is crucial. Celebrating IDAHOBIT helps families communicate a strong stance against discrimination, highlighting the importance of diversity and the damaging effects of stereotypes and biases. These prejudices often arise from the media, societal interactions, and peer influences, necessitating proactive efforts from parents and caregivers to counteract and discuss these issues.

Creating inclusive environments supports diversity and plays a vital role in raising awareness and demonstrating solidarity with LGBTQIA+ students and community members. It is a commitment to creating a world free from prejudice and discrimination, instilling values of empathy, respect and inclusivity.

This Special Report will help you fostering acceptance, empowering young people to become compassionate and informed advocates for equality.
