2008-03-12 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Sander Nyman <2sanderdDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net> Mozilla's Firefox 3.0 beta 4 (Official) for OS/2 has been released. This is a BETA release of Firefox 3, the next generation browser based on Mozilla's Gecko 1.9 platform. It should be used for testing and feedback purposes only. Take a moment to review the information and suggestions in the README.TXT file included in the archive. Some Extensions (Add-ons) may not yet be updated to work with Firefox 3. If you are looking to add new Extensions, you can check the Add-ons site using the link below to see if they are compatible with version 3. "Firefox 3 Beta 4 includes more than 900 enhancements from the previous beta, including drastic improvements to performance and memory usage, as well as fixes for stability, platform enhancements and user interface improvements. Many of these improvements were based on community feedback from the previous beta." You can download it here: http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0b4/contrib/firefox-3.0b4.en-US.os2.zip NOTE: This release requires the C runtime DLLs from Innotek. In the unlikely event that you do not already have version 0.6.3 installed, it is available with an installer here: ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0_6_3-csd3.wpi NOTE: This release requires IPLUGINW.DLL to use the Java and Flash plugins. Available here: http://e-vertise.com/warpzilla/ipluginw20050915.xpi or here: http://download.innotek.de/javaos2/mozilla/ipluginw20050915.xpi NOTE: To have both Firefox, & Thunderbird in use at the same time (or ANY other Mozilla app) they *MUST* be at the SAME version level, or a mismatched DLL will still be in memory when you attempt to start a second Mozilla based program. The easiest way to get around this limitation, and use DIFFERENT version levels of Firefox, Thunderbird, Kompozer, etc., is with Rich Walsh's Run! utility. It is tiny, and VERY easy to set up. To make life even easier, I HIGHLY recommend that you download & use the Internet Application Integration utility from Chuck McKinnis, which actually contains the Run! utility, and sets it up for you, along with coordinating your web browser with your email client for "mailto" links, etc. You can find it here: http://7cities.net/~mckinnis/code/iai1050.exe Or, if you'd rather do it yourself, here is the Run! utility: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/wps/run_060.zip Firefox extensions (add-ons) that add new functionality are available here: https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=firefox Firefox themes (skins) are available here: https://addons.mozilla.org/themes/?application=firefox For release notes, and a list of new features, follow this link: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.0b4/releasenotes/ The official Warpzilla homepage can be found here: http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/ If you have questions, or just want the latest, greatest tips for Firefox, Thunderbird, & Seamonkey, Steve Wendt's excellent "Tips For Warpzilla" page can be found here: http://www.os2bbs.com/os2news/Warpzilla.html For Firefox "Tips & Tricks", see: http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_6.html And finally, if you still have questions, or just want to participate in a Mozilla for OS/2 discussion forum, the Warpzilla newsgroup can be found here: news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.dev.ports.os2 Regards, Sander Top
2008-03-12 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: RĂ¼diger Ihle Today we ware proud to announce EmperoarTV 2.0. EmperoarTV 2.0 brings digital TV experience to the OS/2 and eComStation platform. This includes high quality MPEG2 hard disk recording and playback. With the appropiate hardware you can watch free-to-air digital satellite (DVB-S) unencrypted digital cable (DVB-C) and terrestrial (DVB-T) broadcasts. The latter can be done even on your notebook using an USB2.0 attached receiver. If digital TV is not available at your location, just get an analog PVR card. You can not only watch TV. Digitize your old VCR tapes to full featured MPEG2 and create DVDs and enjoy. For more information visit: http://www.s-t.de/emperoar/ Note that this is a major update, which is not free for existing users. However, an update pricing will be available. Top

2008-03-12 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel I just noticed that the samba server and Netdrive plugin has been updated to 3.0.28a on Netlabs.org FTP Incoming directory. "SAMBA is a SMB/CIFS protocols file and print sharing server/client set originally made for UNIX world to cooperate with corresponding Windows and OS/2 servers or clients. OS/2 has native implementation of SMB/CIFS server/client set - IBM LAN Manager and IBM Peer. These products haven't been updated for a long time and have some compatibility problems with modern Windows SMB/CIFS implementations." 2008-03-13 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Rich Walsh I'm pleased to announce the release of RUN! v0.70 Download it from: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=run_070.zip or http://e-vertise.com/misc/run_070.zip RUN! can eliminate scripts and config.sys entries needed to start many programs - particularly those started as 'helper-apps' by other programs. It sets the current drive, directory, and BeginLibPath to the directory containing the .exe, sets any options you've chosen, starts the program, then terminates. For example, to start Firefox from ProNews/2 without a script: - copy run!.exe to Firefox's directory - rename it firefox!.exe - update ProNews/2 to start (e.g.) D:\NetApps\Firefox\firefox!.exe Options such as turning on LibpathStrict or using your 2nd codepage can be specified by embedding the appropriate character in the exe's name, e.g. firefox!L2.exe. For a concise listing of all its options, run the unrenamed Run!.exe. New in v0.70 ------------------------- - Keep Run! in memory: option 'K' keeps Run! from terminating until the program it started ends. The WPS icon used to start the app will show that it's in use and will surface the app when you click on it. Note: Run! uses about 300k while it's running. - Set Priority: option 'Z' lets you set the priority of the app you're starting. Use 'Z' by itself to set it to 400; use 'Zcdd' to specify the priority (where c= 1-4 dd= 00-31) Top
2008-03-14 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Tom Brown When: Saturday, March 15, 2008 This month Al Hecht is going to show us FileStar 3.0. It's been a very long wait, but it is finally out of beta and like all good software has already had a couple of post GA updates released. Jerry Rash continues to hide in the back room coding away at a new project. It's still not a sure thing, but he might be ready to let us take a peek at it this month. Of course, we said that last month too. Always Q&A. Always coffee and donuts. Always worthwhile.
