Q+A with E.A. Weston (Lupo Legacy)

Q+A with Emily Cyr author of The Lightning Legacy paranormal

Please welcome today's guest author, E.A. Weston!  E.A. (aka Elizabeth Kelly) is the author the Blackrock series, the Avalon series, and Lupo Legacy series.

Q+A with E.A. Weston

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

EA:
I began writing poetry when I was a teenager, where I entered a competition and won a place in a book of anthologies. I used to write songs a lot but did start my writing career until November 2013, after I saw a news story about cyber bullying I couldn’t get it out of my head, which lead me to write my first book.

I wrote my first book Scarred Hearts, which is part of the Blackrock series, in three weeks. It was self published in January 2014 and I haven’t looked back since ;)

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

EA:
I enjoy reading paranormal books and wanted to write in this genre for along time. I began reading Barbra Erskine books by accident while I was on my lunch break years ago. She writes time slip and ghost stories with historical events mixed in. I always found her books interesting and often wanted to emerge myself in her worlds.

My first Paranormal book, Killian, took me about six months to write because I wanted it to be perfect and I was also writing the Blackrock series at the same time. Killian is one of two series’ that I have always wanted to write it is set in the fictional world of Avalon in the fairy realm.  Once I have my fairy series complete I will move on to my other project (may already have notes upon notes written).

The other paranormal series that I have written is called the Lupo Legacy series. This series is written like a TV show, with six episodes released in 2014 and another six coming in November / December 2015. This is my werewolf shifter romance that follows a family of werewolves that come from an ancient royal bloodline of Italian wolves. Emery is 19 when we meet her but doesn’t know that she has a spirit wolf living inside of her until number of circumstances for the change on her. She has many trials not only in love but in dealing with what she now is.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

EA:
I think I would have to be a fairy. I love the mystery that surrounds them and the of course the magic! Where could you go wrong, you even get wings!!

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

EA:
My upcoming release is season 2 of Lupo Legacy. It begins just where season 1 left off with Emery forced into hiding to protect what she is. Asher and his wolf are missing their mate and he is trying to solve the mystery of where she went and how he can find her, but a series of threats are made against her life, which has him feeling useless in the fight against the unknown.

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

EA:
Oh wow that is hard. I honestly have no idea who I would cast in any of my books. My characters are so diverse and they are all made up with no ‘real life’ person in mind when I develop them. But if anyone has any ideas I’ll gladly listen.

Thank you E.A. for joining us here today at From the Shadows!

Q+A with Cheree Alsop + Werewolf Academy Giveaway

Please welcome today's paranormal guest author Cheree Alsop!  Cheree is the author of the The Silver series, The Shadow series, the Small Town Superhero series, and the Werewolf Academy series.

Keep reading for a chance to win Werewolf Academy ebooks!

Q+A with Cheree Alsop

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Cheree:
I began writing when I was about twelve. I used to read everything I could get my hands on. I started out reading every book written by Louis Llamor because I loved anything western. The very first book I ever wrote was a western called One Man Alone (yes, it is a redundant title). It was a sad book- a tragedy. After that, I got caught up with fantasy and never looked back!

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

Cheree:
I've always loved the paranormal. I've been intrigued with werewolves, vampires, and the supernatural since I was young. I loved the idea that there are checks and balances with the paranormal world as well as our own, and when they intersect, there can be a huge variety of complications and intriguing situations!

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Cheree:
I would have to go with a shapeshifter. I write a lot of werewolf books, so the idea of being able to turn into a wolf is a wonderful one. I would also love the ability to turn into a bird of some sort because flying that way just sounds so wonderful!

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Cheree:
Werewolf Academy is a new series about young werewolves who have been rescued from the mass werewolf genocide and they are taken into hiding at the Academy. The book follows twins Alex and Cassie as they learn what it means to be a werewolf in a hostile world. They have their normal classes and also classes designed to help them perfect their werewolf instincts and strengths so they can defend themselves and their packs. Reviewers have said that this series is a mixture of Harry Potter meets Teen Wolf. It has action, adventure, peril, heartache, and a bit of romance mixed in. I think any reader will enjoy it!

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles?

Cheree:
I think any author's dream is to see their books on the big screen. I had a fan make a trailer for my Silver Series and seeing the characters I had created come to life like that was breathtaking. Here's the link to that trailer for anyone who would like to see it.

I think I'm stalling with the answer to the question. I feel like every reader sees characters differently in their own minds, and I don't want to pigeon hole them for my readers. I would just be thrilled to watch the movies!!

Strays (Werewolf Academy #1) by Cheree Alsop

Werewolves are struggling to survive. Jaze and those who remain of his pack build an Academy to protect the children who endured the genocide. Alex and Cassie arrive as orphans after losing everyone they love. The twins find themselves in a new world where they have to survive the politics and dangers of being a werewolf in a world that wants them destroyed.

But outside forces have found them. Can Alex protect his sister and survive the attacks of a man who wants them dead and will stop at nothing to see it happen?

Guest Post: School is Hell, Werewolf or Not by Skyla Dawn Cameron + River Giveaway

Please welcome today's paranormal guest author Skyla Dawn Cameron.  Skyla is the author of RIVER.  Today she will be sharing a special guest post on the subject of High School bullying.  We will also be having a giveaway, so keep reading!

School is Hell, Werewolf or Not

Making my novel River a YA book was not initially something that entered my head; it came purely by necessity. A wolf being turned into a human was bad enough, but an adult woman could basically just leave the human world and find her way back to the forest. Not so for an underage girl, who would have many more barriers in her way and fewer potential resources. So keeping River among humans for the book meant making her a teen, which, of course, meant the setting had to be high school.

I had two main points of concern about this.

One, that all of the cruelty I’d witnessed from kids take the forefront of River’s high schooled experience. Most people consider high school hell. For me, it was middle school.

There were changes in my home life, my mood disorder was changing shape and morphing closer into what I live with today, I had a male teacher who was highly inappropriate with me and other girls, and the other kids...kids were horrible. The push for social dominance that I’d glimpsed in elementary school grew more prominent and uglier in middle school, and while a lot of individuals would find their niche in high school, being different in grades seven and eight was a death sentence. You couldn’t escape becoming a target, sometimes merely saying the wrong thing, being in the wrong place, or doing absolutely nothing at all might lead to violence.

Here’s a quick bit from River:

Jen went silent and still, and I couldn’t appreciate the reprieve because the fine hairs rose on the back of my neck, a presence pushing behind me. Jen stared wide-eyed over my shoulder and lips parted.
I looked behind me to find a crowd of six people swarming, the girl in the lead drawing my attention right away. Long straight dark hair and cold eyes locked on me, broader shoulders and more height than her picture had suggested. Lindsay Sinclair...and she brought an entourage. What a surprise. I hate teenagers.
The photo hadn’t given me the impression there was much to her. I was wrong. Though she might have been a friend of Celeste’s, she wasn’t dressed in the typical, trendy clothes the others wore. Jeans, a large blue winter jacket probably concealing a weapon or two, solid running shoes.
I might need to worry about this one.
I twisted in my seat to face her and leaned back casually, clutched my 8B sketching pencil in case I had to stab her in the eye with it.
She stared down at me calmly, the buzzing tension around the others waiting for a fight not seeming to faze her. “You River?”
Hmm, she needed verification of my identity. Evidently there were several other tall, extremely pale girls with almost white hair at our school. Funny, I never saw any of them. Maybe they were werewolves too.
“I asked you a fucking question,” she said. “Oh, I forgot: you’re a little slow, aren’t you?”
This was going to be fun. My body tensed, prepared to leap at her. “What?”
“I hear you’ve been bothering some friends of mine,” she said.
I waited, but she didn’t continue. Apparently she required confirmation each time she spoke. Lindsay should’ve done her research—she’d be standing there all day if she expected me to respond to everything.
“Are you fucking deaf too?”
I spun the pencil between my fingers, gave the silence a few beats longer just to annoy her. “Waiting for you to get to the point.”
Her gaze narrowed and her cocky half-smile fell. “I don’t like it when someone bothers my people. Get it?”
I got it, I just didn’t care.
Her foot lashed out, kicked into the leg of my chair. My seat turned, screeched on the tile floor, and knocked into the table behind me. Lindsay leaned forward, hands hitting the table on either side of me, just a hair’s breadth away. Our eyes were level and she didn’t blink. “If I ever hear about you pulling that shit again, I will slit your fucking throat.”
A challenge. A challenge issued by someone who could actually be a threat. The pencil in my hand creaked as I clenched my fist; heart raced with glee at the prospect of a fight. My muscles tensed and burned, ready to attack.
Instead I leaned closer, glared directly in her green eyes, and growled low enough only she could hear. “Try it.”

That happened to me. Eighth grade. Except it was outside during lunch and the girl’s entourage was more like thirty or forty kids because they thought a fight was incoming. Someone had told the girl I was spreading rumours about a friend of her sister’s. I, of course, didn’t respond with “try it.” I responded with “I have no idea what you’re talking about but sure, I won’t do it again” while thinking oh god, I’ve never been in a fight, what if it hurts.

Ultimately, thankfully, there was no fight. The next year, ninth grade, the same girl was in my homeroom and was all smiles, friendly and talkative, and I’m pretty sure she had no bloody idea who the hell I was. (Which I found baffling.)

The second point of concern I had was to be careful to show the hellishness of school when you’re thrust in with these people who are still growing and changing and more often than not are horrible, all while avoiding typical high school stereotypes you see in movies and on TV.

Mostly because I don’t remember any of those.

Cheerleaders, right? Actually, I don’t know if we had those. I certainly never saw any women wandering the school in cheerleader outfits. And jocks, I mean, I think we might’ve had those, but I probably couldn’t pick them out in a crowd. I don’t know who was “popular” and whether they were any more horrible than everyone else (I’m guessing not). I hung out with the guitar crowd for a few years and I’m not sure if they counted as a stereotype or not.

And so it was with the novel River. The girls who are mean to her aren’t cheerleaders but just normal bitchy girls. The people who befriend River aren’t just dorks or outsiders, but kids from various groups who simply are lacking something—a sense of place in a pack—she can provide.

None of the kids, even the bullies, can be boiled down to just one type of person—they cross different social circles and they have different motivations (whether to collectively pounce on The Person Who Is Different or from insecurity driving them to establish a false sense of dominance). I know I was picked on, and I picked on others. Sometimes I stood up for kids being teased, other times I joined in the teasing. I am not particularly proud of anything I did that was cruel to someone else, but I think that’s probably more accurate for a lot of teen experiences than a clear-cut case of Person A is a bully and Person B is a victim every time. We can all be monsters given the right circumstances.

A lot of the other secondary characters came from similar idea of folding a lot of different aspects together, amalgamations of people I knew and watched. Charlie, River’s foster brother in the book, is made up of three or four different guys I knew in high school; the thing that happens to him during the dance (no spoilers) is an actual thing that happened to one of those guys (I heard the story second hand since I didn’t go to prom because ugh, I was busy having an anti-prom).

River, in a lot of ways, reflected my experience of school and the things I witnessed more than anything else, which I hope added a touch of realism to a book where wolf in human skin has to attend tenth grade.

River (River Wolfe #1) by Skyla Dawn Cameron.

Defiant, nocturnal, moody, and short tempered. Though she sounds like a typical teenager, River is anything but. She's a werewolf. River was once the alpha female of a wolf pack, until one night when she was attacked and bitten by a mysterious human. When she awoke, she found herself completely alone, and changed into a young human girl. Three years later, after being thrust into a world where she doesn't belong, and living in foster care, River believes she'll never know who bit her or why. Then one day in school, all that changes. Enter Daryl, who seems to be a normal teenage boy, though River recognizes him for what he is: the human that changed her. He holds the answers to all her questions, but only offers vague responses. He seems to be a step ahead of her at every turn, giving her only enough information to create even more questions. Although they're playing his game, River is determined to win. As if being stuck in a world she hates, with a life she never asked for, and faced with a destiny she doesn't want wasn't bad enough, River still must find a way to survive every human's greatest challenge: high school.

Character Guest Post + Giveaway: The Silver Series by Cheree Alsop

Today we have a special character guest post by Jaze Carso of The Silver series by Cheree Alsop and a HUGE book giveaway.

Keep reading for a chance to win every book in The Silver series by Cheree Alsop!

Character Guest Post

“Werewolves hide among you; it’s a secret we have fought for centuries to keep. We were almost wiped out once, and know better than to let the secret out again. But just like humans, werewolves are impulsive and sometimes uncontrollable. That’s where I come in. My job is to protect the werewolves and help them live full and happy lives. There are Hunters and others who don’t believe werewolves have rights and should be hunted and exterminated like animals. I’ve done what I can to smooth Hunter-werewolf relations, but extremists, fighting rings, and covert agencies feel that the fate of werewolves should be to die, be forced to fight for the entertainment of humans who watch the mutilation and bloodshed like it’s a sport, or be experimented upon to unlock the secrets of our superior strength and increased healing capabilities.

I have seen things that would break me if I didn’t remember what I was fighting for. I found my father hacked apart by Hunters, and have rescued friends and comrades from fates worse than death. I feel a noose closing in as though those I care about are in danger, but I can’t find the source of it quickly enough to save them. There are so many werewolves in trouble, and though my team and the Hunters and werewolves that make up what some consider my private army work night and day to rescue them, it’s not enough. We need to do more, and so I am creating a team strong enough and smart enough to stop the threats hurled against us by ignorant humans who fear what they don’t understand.

I am a high school student, and my attempt to live a normal life is shadowed by the werewolves who need my help. Charts of recent werewolf activity hang from my bedroom walls in place of posters. A computer tracking the rogue packs that intimidate the local wolves and endanger innocent humans sits by my bed. In place of text books, pens, and paper, my backpack is filled with guns, knives, and the occasional bag of beef jerky (you don’t want to mess with a hungry werewolf). Instead of studying for classes, my friends spend their days creating high-tech monitoring devices and tracking down the locations of fighting rings, torture chambers, and laboratories.

I have loved with all of my heart, which is the way of the wolf. I have tracked through fields lit by the light of the full moon as it rested upon my shoulders like a cloak of strength. I have suffered to see the pains other werewolves have gone through, and almost died saving a human girl who stole my heart and gave me my life back. I live in the hopes of avenging my father’s death by saving those in pain, and I give every day-”

A sound reverberated through the room. Jaze Carso set down his pen and a smile spread across his face. The curtains to either side of the open window swayed gently in the breeze to create dancing trails of moonlight across the page. Jaze opened his hand and let it play across his palm. A welcome shudder ran through his body. He stood as the howl sounded again, more persistent this time. He took off his clothes and didn’t fight the phase. His joints shifted, pulling him onto his hands and knees. His ears elongated and moved to higher points on his head while his muzzle grew and sharp canines lengthened. Jet black fur ran up his arms and down his body, covering his shoulders and back in a soft undercoat followed by the thick, longer guard hairs. It felt good to be in wolf form again, like putting on a pair of worn shoes molded by time to fit only the wearer’s feet. Jaze shook to settle into his wolf form, then stretched.

Another howl rose and other voices joined it. The notes took on the warm, rounded tones of his pack ready for a night run beneath the welcome embrace of the full moon. Jaze pushed aside the curtain with his muzzle and the moonlight cast his brown eyes with a golden glow. Stars glittered within the inky blanket of night and the full orb above washed the city in an other-worldly glow. Eyes watched him from below, one pair dark blue, another deep crimson red, one set violet, and the last golden and deep with the secrets of the wild. Jaze gave a wolfish grin and leaped from the window.

Q+A with Dana Cameron (Seven Kinds of Hell)

Please welcome today's paranormal guest author Dana Cameron.  Dana is the author of the Emma Fielding series (Site Unseen, Grave Consequences, Past Malice, A Fugitive Truth, More Bitter Than Death, Ashes and Bones) and Seven Kinds of Hell.

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Dana:
I began writing as an academic—I started my professional life as an archaeologist. I started writing fiction after a site looter pulled a gun on my friend and me while we were working on a site in Maine. Later, I told a friend about the incident and she said "you need to write this down!" Suddenly, bam! I needed to write a novel. That led to crime fiction, which eventually led to UF.

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

Dana:
Charlaine Harris and Toni L.P. Kelner invited me to write a story about werewolves at the holidays for their anthology Wolfsbane and Mistletoe. Realizing I could create my own world, with its own rules, I came up with the Fangborn: a race of werewolves, vampires, and oracles secretly dedicated to protecting humanity. More Fangborn short stories followed, and now Seven Kinds of Hell!

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Dana:
I think some kind of spell-caster. There's an element of research and study that appeals to me, and a wide range of powers could come from that talent. Some of my favorite characters in TV and movies and books cast spells!

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Dana:
Seven Kinds of Hell features a different twist on the supernatural creature: the vampires, werewolves, and oracles are secret superheroes, dedicated to protecting humanity. Werewolves aren't bound by the moon, and vampires chemically alter blood to heal, not feed. They're born, not bitten, and trained within the Family. Zoe Miller, the protagonist of Seven Kinds of Hell, doesn't know she's a werewolf, so she has to use her archaeological training and her street smarts to help discover her supernatural powers,

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

Dana:
I really think my protagonist Zoe resembles Mary Elizabeth Winstead (in "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World") and I think Ray Stevenson may make an excellent version of my bad guy. Will, her first love, needs a younger Matt Damon—maybe Lucas Till or James McAvoy, from X-Men First Class? Hugh Jackman and Benedict Cumberbatch can have any other parts they want. Helen Mirren, too.

Seven Kinds of Hell (Fangborn #1) by Dana Cameron.

Archaeologist Zoe Miller has been running from a haunting secret her whole life. But when her cousin is abducted by a vicious Russian kidnapper, Zoe is left with only one option: to reveal herself. Unknown to even her closest friends, Zoe is not entirely human. She's a werewolf and a daughter of the Fangborn, a secretive race of werewolves, vampires, and oracles embroiled in an ancient war against evil. To rescue her cousin, Zoe will be forced to renew family ties and pit her own supernatural abilities against the dark and nefarious foe. The hunt brings Zoe to the edge of her limits, and with the fate of humanity and the Fangborn in the balance, life will be decided by an artifact of world-ending power.

Paranormal Guest Author: Keri Arthur (Riley Jenson, Dark Angels)

Please welcome today's paranormal guest author Keri Arthur!  Keri is the author of the Nikki and Michael series, Myth and Magic series, Ripple Creep Werewolf series, Damask Circle series, Riley Jenson Guardian series (Full Moon Rising, Kissing Sin, Tempting Evil, Dangerous Games, Embraced by Darkness, The Darkest Kiss, Deadly Desire, Bound to Shadows, Moon Sworn), and Dark Angels series (Darkness Unbound, Darkness Rising).

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Keri:
I actually started writing when I was about 12, after I'd read a book where the author killed off a character I loved. I was so incensed I rewrote the book and made the character live! I've been writing 'seriously'--that is, with the aim of getting published--for about 20 years, and was first published with ImaJinn (a US small press) in 2001.

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

Keri:
I've always loved reading fantasy novels, and the first three books I wrote were all fantasy romances. Then I read Children of the Night, by Mecedes Lackey, fell in love with Andre, and knew that's exactly what I wanted to write.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Keri:
I'm not actually sure I'd want to be a paranormal--this world isn't ready for them! lol As for a supernatural talent, again, I'm not sure I'd want one. Such gifts always have their downsides, and to be honest, I'm happy just being me, as I am!

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Keri:
My upcoming Dark Angels series is set in the same world as the Riley Jenson series, so old friends are occasionally revisited. Plus, Risa can kick arse almost as well as her aunt Riley, and she has the help of a seriously sexy Aedh, as well as a reaper.

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

Keri:
I'd love my books to be made into movies, and honestly, as long as the actors were appropriate (for example, Riley has red hair and can kick male arse, so the actress has to at least look like she could do that--no wimps allowed!) then I wouldn't care.

Darkness Unbound (Dark Angels #1) by Keri Arthur

Risa Jones is as extraordinary as her heritage. Born from a lab-enhanced clone mother and an Aedh father, she can not only talk to the souls of the dying and the dead, but she can see the reapers and walk the gray fields that divide this world from the next.

They are skill she rarely uses, however, preferring to concentrate on the business she shares with her two best friends. But when her mother asks her to help the parents of a little girl locked in a coma, she reluctantly agrees. What she discovers scares the hell out of her. Because the little girl’s soul no longer resides in her body, and it wasn’t death and the reapers that took her.

Someone had ripped her soul from her flesh.

As it turns out, a creature consuming the souls of the innocent–and not so innocent–is the least of her problems. Because someone wants to rip open the gates that divided hell from earth, and Risa is a key component in their plans. And the only person standing between her and disaster is a reaper who isn’t exactly on her side.

Paranormal Guest Author: C.C. Hunter (Shadow Falls Series)

Please welcome paranormal guest author C.C. Hunter.  C.C. is the author of Born at Midnight and Awake at Dawn.

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

CC:
Some writers will tell you that they were born with a pen in their hands and by the time their umbilical cord fell off, they’d finished the first draft of their first novel.  Not me.  I was raised in the south, where all my family tried to one-up each other with their stories, I grew up surrounded by storytellers.  And while I was good at it, I was also dyslexic, and writing was not my strong suit.  (Now, standing up and telling my story to an audience?  That I could do with no problem.)  I was twenty-three before I told my husband I wanted to be a writer.  It took years…lots of years, spent teaching myself how to put my talent of telling a story on paper.  I think I may be finally catching on, too.

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

CC:
Ghosts.  LOL.  Seriously, I’ve always loved ghost stories.  I think I love them so much because of all the spooky paranormal elements, this is the one I come closest to believing really exists.  And my first novel with any paranormal element in it was one about a girl whose mom dies and comes back to warn her about bad things that were going to happen to her.  Back in 2006, the paranormal genre was really getting hot.  I had sold one sweet romance to Silhouette years before and wanted to get back into writing novels.  I had been writing Single Title romances, humorous romantic suspense, but humor wasn’t the hottest genre and I couldn’t seem to sell them.  I signed with my agent and she recommended I try to write a book with a paranormal element in it.  I wrote a proposal about Faes and ghosts.  It didn’t sell, but it got the attention of several editors.  Rose Hilliard at St. Martins was one of them, and she loved my voice.

I went on to sell six humorous romances and Rose watched my career from afar.  About two years ago, Rose went to my agent and asked if I would try writing a YA paranormal series. I was leery at first—not about the paranormal element but about the YA.  Ahh, but once I got started I totally loved it.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

CC:
Good question.  And to be honest, I get asked this one a lot, so you’d think I’d have my answer down pat, but I really don’t.  LOL.  I guess it’s just that it’s so hard for me to choose.  Now, when I was writing Born at Midnight, and creating the Shadow Falls universe, I did a lot of research.  And because writers like to tweak details to match their vision, I’ve made some changes to the mythology for many of my supernaturals.  Some of them, like vampires, shape-shifters, and werewolves, can be scary but once you get to know them as characters, you’ll realize they all have some good qualities.   I think that’s what makes it so hard for me to choose—I don’t want to be unfaithful to any of my characters.  LOL.  But if I had to choose, I’d probably go with either a witch or a fae.  I think these characters offer the most options . . . although I think it would be totally cool to be able to fly like a vampire does.  LOL.

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

CC:
I read once that your characters should be the type of person that someone wouldn’t mind being locked in a closet with for several days.  Because basically, that’s what a reader is doing.  Shutting out the rest of the world and spending hours, sometimes days, with your characters.  So I can tell you that I think Kylie and the rest of the crew at Shadow Falls are good closet buddies.  They are interesting, courageous, mysterious (so you won’t get bored), and have lots of heart.  Their experiences in their world can teach us a few things about living in the real world.  Things about romance, friendship, family, and about learning to accept ourselves and the other people in our lives for what they are.

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

CC:
This question is always so hard for me to answer.  I mean, I could toss out names like Zac Efron, Amanda Seyfried, Chace Crawford, but in truth, the roles of Kylie and the all the crew at Shadow Falls are already taken in my mind.  I know the expression on Kylie’s face when she’s really frustrated, and Amanda doesn’t make that expression.  I know how Lucas walks, with his quiet, silent movements and his how body tenses when people get too close, and Zac doesn’t do that.  I know the sexy twinkle Derek gets in his eyes when he looks at Kylie, I know how he sounds when he laughs, and that’s not Chace.  I actually have a film agent shopping around the series and all I can say is that it’s going to be hard to find people to play these characters the way I see them in my head.

Awake at Dawn (Shadow Falls #2) by C.C. Hunter

Now that she’s settled in at Shadow Falls Camp, Kylie Galen’s determined to discover the extent of her supernatural abilities.  But with a ghost insisting someone Kylie loves is about die, a rogue vampire on a murdering rampage, and her sixth sense telling her someone is watching her, Kylie’s quest for answers is quickly put on hold.

To make matters worse, just when she’s about to give her heart to Derek, a half-fairy, he starts pulling away.  When Lucas, a werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past, returns, Kylie’s feels more conflicted than ever. Her weekend with her mom should have been the just the break Kylie needs, but it turns out to be her breaking point.  Someone from the dark side of the supernatural world has plans for Kylie--and it'll take all her resources to get back to Shadow Falls alive...

Character Interview: Rylie Gresham (All Hallows' Moon)

Please welcome our very special guest Rylie Gresham from the pages of Six Moon Summer and All Hallows' Moon by S.M. Reine.

SM:  Thanks for joining us today, Rylie! Would you like to tell us a little bit about yourself?

Rylie:  Okay. Yeah. Hi, my name is Rylie Gresham. I'm about to turn sixteen years old. I hang out in coffee shops and sometimes drink coffee even though my mom said that's why I'm all skinny and short. I like art and movies and hanging out with guys, since girls are catty and weird. I also had a really bizarre summer.

SM:  What made your summer bizarre?

Rylie:  Well, my parents divorced, and they sent me to summer camp so their lawyers could fight in peace. I guess summer camp isn't that strange for most people, but I used to hate the outdoors, so it was really new and unusual for me. Until... things changed.

SM:  That sounds menacing.

Rylie:  If you think werewolf bites are menacing.

SM:  Whoa! So what you're saying is that you're a werewolf.

Rylie:  Yeah, I guess, something like that.

SM:  How can you be "something like that"?

Rylie:  I'm not like most werewolves. It took, like, three months for me to change after I got bitten. And I don't just change on the full moon. I change on the new moon too. But once I wake up human again the next morning, I can never remember what I did all night. I'm not dangerous or anything, I promise. I did eat a deer once, but that was an accident.

SM:  What are you going to do now that you're a werewolf?

Rylie:  I'm going to go live on my aunt's ranch. She's out in the country, so it should be safe for me to turn into a wolf twice a month out there. Way safer than in my mom's condo. Plus I'm really strong now that I got bitten, so I bet I'm awesome at ranch type chores.

SM:  Does your aunt know?

Rylie:  No! Nobody can find out that I've changed. I mean, who would believe me? The only guy who knew was Seth, but I don't know what happened to him.

SM:  Who is Seth?

Rylie:  Seth is really mysterious, so he's hard to describe. He's got dark hair and broad shoulders and miles and miles of muscly arms. And he's got that smile... Wait, what was I talking about?

SM:  How does Seth know about werewolves?

Rylie:  He's got a huge secret of his own. I don't think I'm supposed to tell anyone.

SM:  What's going to happen now?

Rylie:  I don't know. I guess I have to try to finish high school, although that means a whole new set of people to get used to, and a whole bunch of new problems to face. But whatever it is, I can take it on. I mean, I'm a werewolf now. I can just eat anything that gives me trouble.

All Hallows' Moon (Seasons of the Moon #2) by S.M. Reine

Rylie survived becoming a werewolf at great cost. She moves to her aunt’s ranch in the hopes she can enroll in a new high school and quietly continue her life... with a few distinct changes. She transforms into a beast every new and full moon and struggles to control her murderous urges.

Without many werewolves left, it’s hard to stay in hiding. A family of hunters -- Eleanor, Abel, and Seth -- recognize the signs and follow Rylie to her new home. They want to stop her before she murders someone, and the only way to do it is with a silver bullet. Seth soon realizes the werewolf is Rylie, the one monster he failed to kill. Worse yet, he’s still in love with her.

Torn between family and love, Rylie struggles to reconcile her feelings and control the wolf within while Seth fights to do what’s right. But what is right-- obeying desire or duty?

Guest Author Interview: S.M. Reine

Please welcome today's guest author S.M. Reine!  S.M. is the author of Six Moon Summer and The 19 Dragons.

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

SM:
The first thing I ever wrote was a story called "BATS!!!!!" (with a few more exclamation marks) on an Apple IIc+.  I was so young that I couldn't actually read, so I think I forced my poor, suffering mother to transcribe it for me.  It wasn't that bad as far as stories by sugar-spazzed children go.  It had a dilemma (she got a bat for her birthday and it escaped!) and there was drama (it flew around and got stuck in her hair!) but no real conclusion.  That was my real peak as a writer.  It doesn't get any better than bats.

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

SM:
An early love of science fiction and fantasy like Star Trek, Quantum Leap, and too many comic books.  It never occurred to me there might be stories to tell about real life.  Boring!  I started writing plays about mutants in kindergarten, dragons in elementary school, vampires and demons in middle school, and never made my way into reality after that.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

SM:
I would be invulnerable.  Immortality is overrated -- who wants to outlive their family? -- but invulnerability would give me the freedom to live my limited years without fear.  Think of what you could do if you knew nothing would harm you!  Of course, I would probably still spend all my time writing, but  I would be liberated from the terror of paper cuts.

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

SM:
Six Moon Summer is a unique look at werewolves that brings the element of horror back into the genre.  The hero is also super cute, which never hurts!  But the romance is really a minor subplot, and everyone seems to be enjoying it so far.  There's something for everyone: mystery, violence, romance, action, you name it.

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

SM:
That's a really good question!  I haven't thought about it before.  My first reaction is to say that Evanna Lynch would make a fantastic Rylie and that Cam Gigandet could be Jericho, but casting Seth is much too hard.

Six Moon Summer (Seasons of the Moon, #1) by S.M. Reine.

Rylie's been bitten.  She's changing.  And now she has three months to find a cure before becoming a werewolf... forever.

Rylie's parents force her to attend summer camp, but she's just as miserable at the girls' camp as she was at home-- there's nothing vegetarian for her to eat at the mess hall, she hates hiking and archery, and the other campers taunt Rylie mercilessly. One night, the bullying goes too far, and Rylie runs away. She doesn't get far. It's a full moon, and she isn't alone in the forest.  She wakes up unharmed in her cabin the next morning with no memory of what happened. The only sign something has changed are the healed scars on her chest, her increasingly keen senses, and her sudden craving for raw, bloody meat.  A boy from the other camp seems to know what's happening to her, but Rylie isn't sure if she can trust herself with Seth. He's way too cute and he knows way too much.

Rylie soon learns that she only has until the end of summer before she becomes just like the monster that attacked her: a man-eating werewolf hungry for human flesh. Unless she can find a cure, she's going to transforming at the end of the summer and lose her life to the hunger.

Book Review: Six Moon Summer

Six Moon Summer (Seasons of the Moon, #1) by S.M. Reine.

Rylie's parents are going through a messy divorce. They send her to summer camp to get her out of the way of their fighting lawyers, but she's just as miserable at the girls' camp as she was at home-- there's nothing vegetarian for her to eat at the mess hall, she hates hiking and archery, and the other campers taunt Rylie mercilessly.

One night, the bullying goes too far, and Rylie runs away. She doesn't get far. It's a full moon, and she isn't alone in the forest. A wild animal mauls her. She's certain she won't survive. Instead of dying, she wakes up unharmed in her cabin the next morning. The only sign that something has changed are the healed scars on her chest, her increasingly keen senses, and her sudden craving for raw, bloody meat. A boy from the other camp seems to know what's happening to her, but Rylie isn't sure if she can trust herself with Seth.

Rylie soon learns that she only has until the end of summer before she becomes just like the monster that attacked her: a man-eating werewolf hungry for human flesh. Unless she can find a cure, she's only six moons away from transforming forever and losing her life to the hunger...

Review:

Just when Rylie thinks that things can't get any worse--her parents are getting divorced and have dumped her at a summer camp far from the city she calls home--something terrible happens in the forests of Gray Mountain.  Six Moon Summer is an amazing beginning to a new paranormal series.  I was immediately drawn into this dark paranormal tale.  Rylie is an outcast at the summer camp where her parents leave her while they finalize the messy details of their divorce.  Cast aside by her family and her peers, Rylie finds solace in the pages of her journal.  The nasty girls who bully her each day takes things too far though and Rylie finally runs away.  Unfortunately Rylie doesn't find peace in the dark hills of Gray Mountain.  Rylie is viciously attacked by a wolf, or at least she thinks she was, but she wakes up in her cabin the next morning with only old scars and the curious words of a mysterious boy to make her wonder what really happened.  Author S.M. Reine creates building suspense with the terror and mystery of what might happen with each phase of the ever changing moon.  An exciting new work of werewolf fiction with wonderful characters and an intriguing story.  I can't wait to read the next book in the Seasons of the Moon series.

**Side note: Rylie is described as having very pale blond hair, however the girl in the book cover pic has dark brown or black hair.  I only mention this since I found the cover image to be distracting when creating my initial image of Rylie.

I recommend Six Moon Summer (Seasons of the Moon, #1) to readers of paranormal suspense, paranormal romance, young adult (though some scenes may be more suitable for older teens and adults), and especially to fans of werewolf fiction.  Fans of the Wolves of Mercy Falls series (Shiver, Linger, Forever) by Maggie Stiefvater, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer, Firelight by Sophie Jordan, and Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson may enjoy this series.

Sensitive reader warning: violence and bloody transformations
