Gen. Pemberton.
--The Savannah Republican gives the following account of Maj. Gen. Pemberton, who has been assigned to the command of Van-Dorn's forces. He has gone to Jackson to assume command of the Department of the Mississippi:‘ He belonged to the United States Army, and was the officer, we learn, who led the Federal troops through Baltimore when they were set upon and stoned by the populace. After his arrival in Washington, Pemberton resigned and immediately came to Richmond, when President Davis appointed him to a command in the Confederate service. Subsequently, Gen. Pemberton was sent to Charleston, and was in command when the enemy were defeated at James Island. He is described as a good officer, if anything a little over-cautious, and willing to be advised by such men as can do both him and the country a service. Let us trust that the new commander will retrieve our fortunes in Mississippi as soon as possible.
