Retribution.

We publish elsewhere the infamous order of the Federal General Steinweur, commanding the arrest of five prominent citizens of Luray Page county, Va., to be held as hostages, and punished with death in case any of the Yankee soldiers are shot by our guerrillas.

The people of the South call upon the Confederate Government to pick out by lot five of the Federal officers in our hands — Americans born — and hold them as hostages for the fate of those citizens of Luray. This scoundrelism must stop, or the people and the soldiers will take the matter into their own hands and give no quarter to prisoners.
