Closing the stores.

By the proclamation of the Governor, published this morning, it will be seen that all stores and places of business, other than those engaged in filling State or Confederate connects, shall hereafter be closed each day at two o'clock P. M. The object of this is to afford every facility for organizing a force for local defence, and to allow merchants and their employees an opportunity of perfecting themselves in military drill. The proclamation also calls out the militia of the second class, who are ordered to meet daily in the Capitol Square for proper instruction. This call will undoubtedly meet the approval of all right-thinking men, and it is to be hoped that it will be responded to with alacrity. Others beside the militia of the second class should meet on the demand of this proclamation and form companies to act when their services are required. Now is the time for every man to show his interest in the defence of the city. Both old and young, foreign-born citizens and those exempt from militia duty, should come forward without delay. The next few days will undoubtedly decide the contest now going on before the city, and duty calls every one to do all in his power to assist in the struggle.
