Confidence in our Government.
To the Editors of the Dispatch:It must be a source of extreme regret to all true Southern men, to see so many attacks, just or not, made against the Government by some of our public journals. These attacks have the effect of weakening our holy cause, and also give aid and comfort to our enemies. Just, manly, and philosophical criticisms upon public measures and the conduct of public men may serve a good purpose; but the unprovoked assaults which we often witness are wrong, and should at once cease.--However persons may differ in opinion as to their merits, it must be conceded that the members of the Cabinet and all our Generals have been selected at least with reference to the public good, and it may be safely affirmed that many of them have distinguished ability, and that all are truly patriotic. As for the President, all reflecting and intelligent men must know that he is the right man in the right place, at the right time, and that the South needs him.
