Gas explosion

--On Sunday night last an explosion took place in Pink alley, near the Second Market, the report from which was almost as loud as a cannon. On investigation, it was ascertained that the main gas pipe leading along that alley had been in a leaking condition for some time — that the escaping gas had accumulated in an adjoining culvert — and that some one, in passing along the alley, had thrown a cigar into the culvert, which caused the ignition of the gas, and produced a terrific explosion. The cap to the culvert was blown from its place, and the buildings and grounds adjoining were shaken as if by an earthquake, but fortunately no one was injured.
