Doings of the enemy.
The Washington Star, of Friday evening last, publishes the following editorial paragraphs:‘ We are confident (from private advices) that the Convention now in session at Wheeling, on declaring that the oligarchy's instruments in possession of State authority at Richmond have abdicated their several offices by creating a revolution for the destruction of the liberties of the people of Virginia, will elect to the Provisional Governorship of the State, Mr. Pierpoot; of Monongalia, a gentleman of high character and great popularity, who is well known as one of the most useful and influential citizens in the western section of the Commonwealth.
We learn from Fortress Monroe that several officers of the Albany regiment that were engaged in the late affair at Big Bethel have undered their several resignations, through dissatisfaction with the continued connection of General Pierce with the army there, and that it is highly probable that a number of officers of other regiments in that quarter will follow their example.
Three of the bridges burned on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad by the Secessionists have been completed, and yesterday a train of cars passed over the road as far as it has been repaired. The New York Fire Zouaves mounted several cannon yesterday on their breastworks, just west of Alexandria, and heavy guns are being mounted all along the line of earthworks between that city and Arlington Heights.
Yesterday President Lincoln, accompanied by Secretaries Cameron and Chase, paid a visit to the camps over the river, where they were received with great enthusiasm. The party spent some time in examining the fortifications, and left highly pleased with the completeness and perfection of the arrangements for defence.
The disunion troops from Leesburg burnt, last Saturday, four bridges on the Alexandria, Loudon and Hampshire Railroad--Tuscarora, Lycoline, Goose Creek and Beaver Dams: three of 140 to 200 feet, and one of 50--being the balance of the bridges from Leesburg to Broad Run.
