Johnson, Robert Underwood 1853-
Editor; born in Washington, D. C., Jan. 12, 1853; graduated at Earlham College, Indiana, in 1871. He became connected with the editorial staff of the Century in 1873; edited the Century War series (with Clarence Clough Buel), and subsequently extended the work by 4 volumes, covering the battles and leaders of the Civil War. It was he who induced General Grant to write his Memoirs, the first part of which was published in the Century War series. He originated the movement which resulted in the establishment of the Yosemite National Park; and was secretary of the American Copyright League. His works include The winter hour; Songs of liberty, etc.
