Governor; born in
Kingston, Pa., June 8, 1830; graduated at Williams College in 1849; became a lawyer in 1853; served in the
Civil War; promoted lieutenant-colonel; was taken prisoner in January, 1863, while making a night assault on
Fort Johnson, and was imprisoned at
Macon, Ga. At the close of the war he was brevetted brigadier-general; was governor of
Pennsylvania in 1878-83.
He was the author of
Controversy between Connecticut and Pennsylvania; and
Protection vs. Free trade.
He died in
Wilkesbarre, Pa., Dec. 1, 1892.
