Cod, Cape

The long, narrow, and sandy peninsula of Massachusetts, somewhat resembling a person's arm slightly bent at the elbow; about 65 miles long, and from one to 20 miles wide. It belongs to Barnstable county. On its northern extremity, known as Race Point, is a light-house with a revolving light 47 feet above the sea. This section of Massachusetts was discovered and named by Bartholomew Gosnold (q. v.), in 1602.
