[117] ἀστραγάλοισι: the game of 'knuckle-bones' is mentioned in Il. 23. 88, “ἀμφ᾽ ἀστραγάλοισι χολωθείς.” It was a favourite game of boys, cf. Plut. Alcib. 2. Pliny (N.H. 34. 55) describes the famous statue by Polycletus of the Astragalizontes, two boys playing with astragali, which Ap. probably had before his mind.
