(σκᾶπος).
1.
The shaft of a column; that which supports the capital, and rests upon the base (Vitruv. iii. 5).
2.
The shaft of a pillar which supports one end of a stair in a staircase.
3.
(καυλός). The shaft or stem of a lamp-stand (candelabrum).
4.
The “yarn-beam” of a weaver's loom (Lucret. v. 1352).
