νόμισμα). A Roman gold coin, introduced by the emperor Constantine about A.D. 312, which remained in use until the downfall of the Byzantine Empire; its weight was 1/72 lb., its value about $3. The word is preserved in the modern Italian soldo and the French sou. See Numismatics, page 1115.
