Maharbal
(Μαάρβας). A son of Himilco, and one of the most distinguished officers of Hannibal in the Second Punic War. He is first mentioned at the siege of Saguntum. After the battle of Cannae he urged Hannibal to push on at once with his cavalry upon Rome itself; and on the refusal of his commander, he is said to have observed that Hannibal knew how to gain victories, but not how to use them (Livy, xxi.Livy, xxii.; Florus, ii. 6).
