The absence of literary and epigraphical references, as well as the lack of remains other than Roman blocks reused in the Romanesque cathedral, suggests that this was a village of little importance. In the lower part of the town, now within the urban district, is the Cava de Viriato, an encampment of the Republican era. It is a polygon, with well-preserved walls of compacted earth. No structures have been found inside, and few remains. The encampment, perhaps a camp of Julius Caesar, was the point of convergence of some of the main roads of the district.
