s, and a variety of eatables, jams, jellies and domestic wines. Really the display of these things touched the tenderest cord in the soldiers "breast, " and the many hearty expressions of "God bless the ladies, "God bless the women," which escaped the suffering soldier as he lay on his pallet of straw, or was being removed to a clean bed, loudly testified his gratefulness. Then it was that these patriotic and noble women would have received full compensation. The same patriotic impulse and pity for human suffering which dictated the girls, and the same delicacy and tact which prepared them, (ennobling feelings as they are,) would have insured their accepting these heartfelt expressions of gratitude as ample remuneration for all their toil and labor. It would be gratifying to the army, if every lady whose kindness they have experienced could read this expression of their thanks. W. F. Carrington, Med. Director of Army of N. W. Va. It is right that the ladies, and others, should know that the articles have reached their destination, and my pressing engagements forbid my acknowledgement by letter. Boxes received from the Rev. Mr. Baker, agent, Staunton; Ladies' Aid Society, Mount Carmel; ladies of Middle-brook; ladies of Augusta, Ga.; Ladies' Society, Lexington, Va.; ladies of Charlotte co., Va.; ladies of Blackerville; ladies of Waynesborough, Va.; Mrs. Wm. Clarke, and ladies of Halifax co.; Va.; and many others from ladies and societies which the Surgeons of hospitals have failed to report. Aloof from the universal sympathy for the soldier which these contributions show, coming, as they do, from the neatly mansion and humble cottage, they indicate a like universal patriotism and deep interest in our present struggle.
