Nació el 11 de octubre de 1919 en Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Trayectoria
Considerado como uno de los mejores percusionistas y directores de combo de la historia del jazz. Muchos músicos adquirieron destreza tocando junto a Blakey, para luego formar sus propios grupos. Intentó durante toda su vida imponer a su instrumento en primera línea.
Junto al pianista Horace Silver forma The Jazz Messengers, en 1954. Su primer álbum fue Horace Silver & The Jazz Messengers. Colaborador en 1963 de la compañía Impulse con McCoy Tyner, Sonny Stitt y Art Davis; participó en una gira mundial durante 1971-1972 con "The Giants of Jazz", estrellas entre las que se encontraban Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt y Al McKibbon; y junto a otros tres grandes baterías (Max Roach, Elvin Jones y Buddy Rich) en el Newport Jazz Festival de 1964.
Fallecimiento
Art Blakey falleció el 16 de octubre de 1990 en Nueva York.
