Irish crochet dress

My oldest daughter made another dress for her little cousin who will be born in a few months.  The first dress was for 0-3 months this one is for 3-6 mos.  She was surprised at how much more time it takes to make a dress that small with only a minor size change.

Once again it is size 10 thread and a hook size of 9.  She used light blue for the detailing of the roses and around the edges.

0-3 months white dress

My oldest daughter had been working on a gift for a baby cousin that had yet to be born.   This is for a kind aunt and uncle, my in laws, who let us stay with her when we had mold damage in our bathroom of our home which caused us to leave our home.  Which took several months to remedy.  The aunt uncle  are kind and let us stay at their home through an operation on one kid and several illnesses in my children they where and are good sports about the whole thing.  We love them dearly.

This dress is hand crocheted in size 10 thread.  My daughter added 2 antique mother of pearl buttons to the back and tons of ribbon roses to the dress.

Crochet Tam

smaller version of my irish crochet Tam hat minus the embellishments

This is a smaller version of my Irish crochet Tam hat. I had two balls left after making the kits for my etsy store so I made the same hat with half as many increases and got this little smaller version.  I also omitted the  cutting of one thread on the hat band and going to the steel hook. Was an experiment and I think it worked well The yarn is Bernat Cassino vintage yarn from the 1980's and no longer made. The color twill cream/tan) when worked up looks like a cream color. I made a similar hat just to give you an idea of what the color looks like better in the kits using the two balls of but it is much smaller than the one in the kit and not near as fancy.  Now what to do with it do I embellish it keep it or sell it.  Have not decided yet.

update:
Shortly after  posting this one of my neighbors stopped bye and we were discussing her friend with cancer.  Yep that must be why I made it to give to the neighbor so she can give to her friend to cover her head because of the treatments.  Somethings you never know why you are doing something till after you have done it.

Pre-Valentine's Day

My grandmother was a florist for years, so was my aunt, my older sister, and I was a florist for years.  So yes you can guess correctly in that Valentine's is like one of my least favorite holidays because it always meant lots of work and not seeing those you loved.  It also meant customers coming into my work because they felt guilty not because they wanted to make their loved ones feel loved.

My grandmother is in heaven and this is now one of those holidays I think of her.  Which does make the holiday a little better to me as I remember working with her side by side when I was a little girl.  When I think of her I think of the little guardian angles she passed out I have two types from her.  My Aunt Virgie actually started this tradition but my Vavo carried it on.  I have saved many of these tokens over the years I plan on giving them to my grandchildren on their 8th birthdays at their baptisms as a gift from their great great grandmother in heaven.  I think it will be special or at least I hope so many generations tied together in a little token.  I have 12 tokens so I have saved 4 per child of mine if some have less than four I will save them for those who may have more than 4 kids.  Yes there are two types of angles that are different the silver colored ones are the more prized ones as that is the type most people in my family remember but she did pass out two types of angles.  Most probably do not remember the rest (the goldish coins) but they are all still from my Vavo.

The photo in this post is of my beautiful  Vavo and two of my three children when they were little people.  The picture in the picture on the right of two of my children they are wearing two dresses that I made them for Easter one year one is sewn and one is crocheted I made the headband too that the younger is wearing.

Hope you have a lovely Valentine's with loved ones and remember the day is about love for all not for guilt.

Irish crochet Tam kits

I have made a few kits available in my store these are limited items as the yarn used in my original Tam is from the 1980's and has not been made about 30 years.  So here is your chance to make the item with vintage thread and antique mother of pearl buttons.  Similar to mine only the color is a little different.

Lovely Irish crochet details on this tam. All yarn included in kit please crochet tightly or you will not have enough it take the entire amount to make the hat.  Samples are all in one color of yarn but would be lovely if colors are added to the Irish crochet details or the lace edging

Items in kit
*pattern
*3 balls of vintage yarn ( color twill cream/tan)
*5 antique mother of pearl (MOP) buttons because of their age they will show signs of age that adds to the charm of the piece ( not pictured they will all be different than each other no two kits the the same) so each hat is one of a kind when done
* pattern instructions

There are five flowers made for this cap one mother of pearl button per flower center

The yarn is Bernat Cassino vintage yarn from the 1980's and no longer made . See images of balls of yarn for color the hat samples are made from different colors of this same yarn. This is for a kit only not the finished item and only comes in the color twill cream/tan).

Items not in kit but needed for project
hooks used are a 5 and 8 steel
and G and H aluminum
liner fabric if you want yours lined ( mine were not)

Also this yarn likes to stretch so it is best to make a liner. If you do that you will have to figure out that part yourself. It is just a big circle gathered to a band that is the same diameter as your head plus a tiny bit about an 1/4 inch for easy of wear. But a pretty silk is nice inside make sure the liner will fit you then sew it into the hat at the brim and at the point where the brim transitions from brim to hat

about the yarn
name Cassino discontinued from the 1980's
Brand Bernat
Weight DK / 8 ply (11 wpi)
Meterage 110 yards (101 meters)
Unit weight 50 grams (1.76 ounces) per ball
Gauge 22.0 sts = 4 inches
Needle size US 6 - 4.0 mm ( for this pattern you will be using different sizes then the suggested size hook)
Fibers 100% Cotton

Baby bonnets, earrings, snow hats, scarfs

If you remember at the beginning of the year I was restarting with blogging.  I think I have done pretty well with getting back into blogging.

buyhandmadeblue_3I am also trying to get my etsy store going to. Some of the items in the store at the moment are sample pieces from publication either magazines or books some made it in some did not. But all are one of a kind because I pretty much made them then put them in a box and forgot where they were. Some got rediscovered and are now seeing the light of day so I decided since I had not seen some in four years from storage I would put them up for sale so someone can get use from them.

The knitted hats are from a few years back when my oldest daughter was raising money for a school trip to Washington DC with her 7th grade class.  My youngest is trying to go on that same trip now.  So since we still had these they are put up for sale for her to be able to pay her way.  She has to earn $2,800.00  so as you can see this will not get her there but that is ok every little bit helps. Hope you are all having a great day.

Shakespeare hats

IMG_2797
IMG_2807IMG_2791Four hats for Shakespeare  week at my kids school that have been in a state of half done for 2 to 3  years now (three since April of 2012).  I am trying to go through my sewing area and get some half done projects finished there are few corsets from plays that never got done, a shirt, a dress these hats and many other things like half knitted projects.

IMG_2808
IMG_2790The pink and blue sequined ones were started when my oldest was a narrator in the school play they had been meant for that year I made two that year to be used A white one and a golden one.  I was working on a blue and a pink one too.
IMG_2806
IMG_2805Originally all four narrators were going to wear them but only my daughter wanted to so I stopped on the others.  I continued to make the golden one as the lead wanted to wear it and she was a very nice girl so I was happy to do it for her.  So these ended up spares so they did not need to be finished that is always a bad thing to tell myself as this is what happens.

If you look at the picture a few down and see the back of two narrators.  You will notice a narrator in sort of a hot pink purple color that is who was to wear the pink one .  My daughter who you also see in that photo was to wear the blue one the green narrator was going to get the golden on e and the other pinkish narrator was to get the white one.  As you can see none of that idea worked out as planned.  The person you see in the below photo wearing the golden beaded hat was actually the lead female in the play.

My daughter wearing the blue and pink hats in these photos is the daughter that was the one that was in the play these were to worn in.  I finished those two hats yesterday just did not have a child to use as a manquin at the time to take photos with.

I made the two jacket corsets you see below in the next photo.  I actually made four of them that year as I wanted all the narrators to match and the costumes they had were pretty shot so I made new ones. The school has not budget for costumes as it is a private school and funds are tight so I made these costumes with my own money and the school uses them every now and again.  My kids wear them all the time.
IMG_2793The pale pink one ( see first photo)was also started that year but it was for one of my other daughters to wear during the week long festivities where they got to wear costumes each day.  There is a new school rule only one day this year of the students wearing costumes makes me sad.  This was the most favorite week for my kids at school.  The pale pink one is being needle woven to fill the spaces between the store bought pink braid.  I had a little bit of this pale pink braid left and thought this might be a good way to use it up.  Little did I know it would still be on the foam head 2 years later.
IMG_2792

The white one I know I started latter but for the life of me I can not remember when I think it was the next year.  The white one below was meant to be more of snood style cap not a Juliet style cap like the others.  The white and pale pink are still not done but hopefully soon to be.

Black and white Skirt and Amy dress

frontsideI have been wanting to make some skirts like this for  a while for every day use and for dress up and for costumes this was an experiment.  Since I am backing off a little on costumes for the school this year.  I thought I might make a few costumes for my family.   This one is for my family.  It feels funny calling this a costume because for me this would be a normal skirt I would wear to church or any wear else.  That is not to say I would not wear it as a costume too I would.
back

The corset I did not make it is one I bought at Hot Topic.  Yes I shop at Hot Topic it is one of my families favorite stores.  That sometimes surprises people.

IMG_2801The mannequin has a smaller waist than i do so it does not quiet fit right but I think next time I will make the waist 4 inches narrower.  The fabric is gathered in the back of the skirt to form a pseudo bustle.  I still have tons of upholstery fabric and trim so this is one way I can use it up and do something with it.  I used some of my fringe trim to line the hem of the skirt.

I think the left over fabric from the Amy dress would be great like this.

In case you do not know what the Amy dress is go here and here. I never actually showed it finished on my blog so for those who were curious as to how it came out here you go .

My middle daughter and myself did the collar work together the sleeve lace is 100 year old curtain fabric I still have lots of both fabrics in this dress.  I even used some of the fabric  a few years ago for another costume for my middle daughter when she went to a dance as the Mad hatters daughter that costume also got worn in the Wizard of Oz play by my youngest daughter when she played a munch-kin.  Costumes in our house almost have a life of their own as does fabric.  If you look at the bottom photo for Amy's costume she has quiet the bustle I had to make this black and white skirt not as large and not as complicated but fun all the same

all ready
You know that old saying that women like to use does this dress make my bum look big in this case yes would be the answer but it would be more like does it look big enough yet.  Interesting what use to be normal fashion is now costume fashion.

The picture to the right is my middle daughter wearing the other costume that used some of the same fabric as Amy's costume this is the daughter that helped me with the neckline lace of Amy's dress.  The shirt she is wearing is also from Little Women but in the play the guys wore this shirt.  To us it is just a good pirate like shirt.

The pictures below are my youngest daughter during tech rehearsals For the Wizard of Oz from this school years play this last October.
