On every Garden Bloggers Fling there's always talk about what the "it" plant of the region is. I can't remember what the final consensus was for the Capitol Region Fling, but I believe Monarda and Amsonia were both in the running...
They were pared up here in the garden of Debbie Friedman...
Of course I was thrilled by this small patch of Opuntia, right under the mailbox!
From our Fling itinerary: "Landscape designer and owner of Bethesda Landscapes, Debbie’s garden is inspired with elements from nature used as art or functional pieces. Logs are made into benches, log slices are used as patios, willow is grown to weave into balls, granite stones from vacations in Mt. Desert Island, ME, are interspersed into the front walkway, and log hollow slices are set on their side for your own interpretation."
In what to my eye seemed like a fairly typical suburban setting, this front garden scene really stood out — in a good way!
I didn't manage to catch one in a photo, but there were happy pollinators everywhere.
Random is good.
If I remember correctly these tall beauties were on the neighbor next-door's lot.
I think the fluffy one may be a Cryptomeria?
The entrance to the back garden.
Bloggers hiding in the shade! If I didn't know better this might have a bit of a creepy feel to it.
Soon enough I joined them...
Bird's nest fern!
I wanted to ask if this was a custom made piece or purchased retail, I love it.
Those logs mentioned in the description.
Wouldn't it be nice to take a little nap here?
Excellent fencing.
It wasn't until looking at my photos that I realized just how massive the house was! I was so focused on the garden while I was there.
Love this, so much...
And this!
We tried to figure out exactly what plant it came from but couldn't. I've seen other bloggers throw out the question, but not seen an answer. Anyone know?
Obviously it makes a fabulous Tillansia holder
A cut end...
And that's a wrap on this garden! Oh so much more Fling left to share...

Following an Instagram tip...
A couple of weeks back a fellow Portlander tagged me on Instagram to tell me about a plant sale she'd found and thought I would want to know about. It was only for the weekend, and I'd already missed the Saturday hours...
But this photo, well it had me planning to head over there on Sunday...
And I'm glad I did. Here's my haul...sorry, that big guy kinda hides the other two plants.
This is a "branch" off a plant that looked a lot like the hanging one above, in the Instagram photo. The owner said that basket had fallen to the ground and broke into pieces, so he was selling them individually. He gave me this one.
It, and it's friend with the red fruit, are now living with a few Tillandsia on one of my metal trellis.
Ya, they're hanging at an angle that makes it hard for the water to stay in the cup, not ideal long term... but I'm trying to keep it well hydrated.
This bad boy got a tall metal pot and pride-of-place in the shady corner.
The fellow who was holding the sale had spent much of his life in Miami, when he came back to the PNW he brought plants, cause that's what we plant people do, right? Sadly he's loosing his eyesight, and was rehoming many of his treasures. I'm thrilled I could adopt a few and will remember how lucky I am to be able to see their beauty every time I walk by them. We take so much for granted as we go about our daily lives. Things that can change overnight...
Thus was such an excellent and unexpected plant haul! And only $20 for all three...
Thanks @julineb!

Wednesday Vignette, a summer-long color boost!
I've previously written about the bright pink Bougainvillea the dear Outlaw gifted to me last May (here). It just keeps getting better and better. Especially when backed by an Agave ovatifolia and friends...
I doubt I can overwinter it, but I will definitely be hunting one down again next spring. This is a plant I hope to never again spend a summer without, it makes me happy everyday (of course the sunshine is helping too).

$23...
So there's this vintage shop on N. Killingsworth Street that I drive by all the time. Finally, after 2+ years, the stars aligned and I stopped to check them out. Guess what? I was there within their normal business hours but they were closed. Turns out there was a vintage "market" going on across town, and they had a booth there. Damn. In my perfect world I would have got back in the car and gone to the market. However since I had to be home in less than a half hour that wasn't possible. Making lemonade out of lemons, I walked across the street to ReClaim It! I visited this place once years ago, right after they opened. Truth be told I didn't really remember much about that visit, so my expectations were low. That's why I didn't take a photo of the building, and instead I'm sharing a screen shot from Google maps...
And here's what I came home with, yes, for $23...(OMG)...was I lucky I stopped in there!
My visit was just a quick walk through, but at the prices they put on things I just picked up almost everything that caught my eye, like this deep ladle...
Which I thought might look good bent over one of the tall shady cylinder planters. Nope. Don't like it.
This is better. I had to bend it again (one or two more times and it's gonna break) but I think I like it here...
Sweet! ($3)
This tile piece looks like it might be the bit cut out for an exhaust fan in a kitchen remodel?
I had just planted up a fern in a piece of repurposed metal (from the ReBuilding Center), and knew it might need something to catch drips. Problem solved! ($2)...
The tall metal square has so many possibilities...
Especially since it has this handy nail hole, should I want to hang it.
For now it's tucked under a formerly hanging Tillandsia orb, which over the winter ceased to be a perfect circle and didn't look good hanging any longer...($3)...
I have to admit this can, well my heart might have just jumped out of my chest when I saw it. I was afraid there wouldn't be a price tag on it — you know, the NFS great store fixtures tend to be labeled with?
Bumps and bruises were plentiful, but I couldn't help but see shades of the vintage zinc barrel that I'd had a crush on for years and years (here, here, here and here). I know, those were some amazing rose-colored glasses! But instead of a price tag of over $100 this one was only $15. Ya. $15...
And it was intact!
No doubt I'll find its ultimate purpose soon, but in the meantime was called into action as the base of a refreshments table for a recent tour group that came through my garden.
