Microsoft launches another free update for Windows 8

As Windows 8.1 somewhat shadowed the failure of Windows 8, Microsoft decided to overcome a bit more defects in another free update, so called Windows 8.2. Windows 8.2 is scheduled to be available as a free update on April 8th 2014.
Windows 8 was the first of the tile based operating system, on which Microsoft was banking upon to be a super hit in the market, but it failed very badly. There were some huge blunders in it. With Windows 8 being so much colorful that it irritated everyone. The tile based experiments from Microsoft failed and it came as a shock to them.

Defects in Windows 8
  • A very irritated colorful interface
  • Problems in the Windows Store
  • Problems in the tile based applications
  • Limited no. of options in customization of Start Menu

With these numerous defects in Windows 8 Microsoft offered a free update to an improved version of Windows 8, which they named Windows 8.1(some may call it Windows Blue). With Windows 8.1 update Microsoft tried to overcome some the big defects in Windows 8 which led it to a big failure. Now the next free update i.e. Windows 8.2, is expected to come with a lot more improvement in the Windows 8.1. Windows store was revived in Windows 8.1 and was just a bit too heavy, so Microsoft is expected to rethink over it and come up with a better Windows Store.

The first Update- Windows 8.1

Windows 8 saw its first update with release of Windows 8.1, which removed a few of the major drawbacks in Windows 8. Windows 8.1 got a better review than Windows 8, and was more convenient to use. 5 Things We Can Expect From The Next Android OS

With the announcement of a new Android operating system, fans of the mobile software are excited to hear what new features will be added to your phone or tablet. Fitting in line with the sweet names of past versions, the new system is expected to be called Android KitKat and will be released later this year on Android smartphone and tablet devices. If you are excited to get KitKat on your phone, or if you are waiting to purchase a new Android device with KitKat on it, this list will take a look at five features you can expect to see with the latest installment of the operating system.
Android Kit Kat
Exynos Chipset
Samsung has been waiting for a new operating system to put its latest system chip into and KitKat is expected to be the time. The Exynos is used in a variety of Samsung products, making speeding up their processing power and making them lightening quick. Putting this in a phone will allow for speedy response and the ability for a faster experience for users. Android phones are already very quick, so this improvement will only add to the user experience.

Cloud Service
With users having expanding libraries of music, photos and video, there is a growing need for cloud based services. One benefit of Android phones it the ability to have a SD cards and sim cards for memory. However for some, it is just easier to have documents and information upload to a cloud service. With this in mind, Android has taken steps to vastly improve its cloud services. Users will be given a certain amount of storage, but also can add to it as they need.

Better Battery
The new OS is also expected to greatly enhance the battery life on your smartphone or tablet. With a stronger processor, this often comes with a sacrifice of battery life. However Android has worked hard on KitKat to assure that users will have the best speeds, without having to charge their batteries as frequently.

Better Network Coverage
With the ever-expanding arena of mobile networks, it is necessary for phones to keep up with available network coverage. KitKat is expected to do just this on many of mobile devices. Users with Bell service can expect Bell.ca android OS devices to run quicker than ever with overall improvements to your coverage.

More Accessories
With the new KitKat software, you can expect to use your phone in more places with more accessories. KitKat is a major overhaul of the system and therefore Android looks to put all of its eggs in the basket. With that in mind, you can expect to have a variety of accessory and add-on options for your mobile device or tablet.

There is sure to be more in the works for KitKat, but this is the news that is expected to be the most valuable to Android users. The list will continue to grow as more information is leaked about the release. But until then, Android users can salivate at the potential options that KitKat will bring to their mobile device or tablet.

12 Things and New Settings You Must Know About iOS 7

Apple's new mobile operating system, iOS 7, includes a lot of obvious changes, perhaps the most since iOS itself was released.
We have put together our 12 favorites for you here today.
1. Dynamic Type
One new feature of iOS 7 which I immediately wanted to test was 'Dynamic Type'. Available from iOS 7's Settings App > General > Text Size, this one allows you to control the relative text size across any apps that support it. What Dynamic Text means is that if you prefer text bigger or smaller in general, you need only set it once and your apps will instantly adopt your settings, system-wide.
2. Frequent Locations
Buried inside Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services is a new option labeled 'Frequent Locations', a feature that allows your iPhone/iPod to remember where you have been. Go here and you will see something that might make you shiver with Big Brother-y chills, or it might make you think, "hey, that's cool. I wonder what benefit that will provide me down the road?"
Either way, it is good to know, so we tell you. There are settings to fit both classes of mentioned users.
3. Dynamic Wallpaper
Apple likes to bake in subtle changes with the potential for them to grow into larger features, and I believe they have done so with what they are calling 'Dynamic Wallpaper'. iOS 7 features seven different-colored themes on a background of floating bubbles. The colors, not surprisingly, match the green, yellow, blue and red of the iPhone 5c, plus some grey shades and one purple/blue color mashup. I am not convinced these set of wallpapers look all that great, but the concept is intriguing. Will developers be able to design their own animated wallpaper down the road? This will be one to watch.
4. Better Do Not Disturb Settings
If you have ever had iOS's Do Not Disturb set only to have an iMessage chime just because your phone was awake while you checked email, fret no more. You can now configure whether DnD works only when the device is locked or all the time. Yet another example of a minor, incremental change that will make a huge difference for some of us.
5. Blocked Callers
Answering calls from users to block calls and texts from spammers, Apple has finally added a global blocklist into iOS. Accessible in the Phone, Messages, and Facetime sections of the Settings app, iOS 7's new 'Blocked' list does just what it says ensures that you won't be notified of any calls or texts from anyone listed here.
The rub is that if you want to block a number (or email address, for Facetime calls) that hasn't called you yet, you must first associate it with a contact. That is easy if it's an ex-liontamer that you no longer wish to work with but previously had in your Contacts, but gets a little trickier if it is some random spammer.
Numbers that have called you, though, can be blocked directly from the 'Recents' list in the Phone app. Just click the circled 'I', scroll down, and select 'Block this Caller'.
6. Multiple 'From' Address Management
Like you can on the Mac, iOS has long allowed you to set multiple 'From' addresses for IMAP and POP accounts in Mail. But it is never worked well, and never really felt officially supported. It required a comma to make it work and when typing in the appropriate field, the keyboard would have no comma available! Still, it's always worked, and a lot of us rely on it. Good news for all of us is that in iOS 7 this feature is made official and gets first-class-citizen treatment in the UI
Simply visit Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > (your iCloud, POP or IMAP account) and navigate to the screen with the 'Email' field on it by tapping again into your account. When you tap on the 'Email' field, you are now shown a list that allows you to edit, re-arrange, and even highlight a single address to be used by default.
7. Explicit Computer Trust
This is not a setting you will need to find, It will find you. The first time you connect your iOS 7 device to a computer the device itself will confirm that you wish to share your settings and data with the new computer. This trust was implicit in the past, but these days Apple seems to agree that we shall never presume a trust relationship. That is a good thing.
8. Background App Refresh
One of the newly-touted features of iOS 7 is the ability for apps to work together with the OS on coalescing their updates. This is a great thing and should vastly improve network efficiency as well as battery life. Still, there may be some apps which request to have a 'Network pit stop' a little too often, and Apple gives you, the user, the ability to disable them on an app-by-app basis. Navigate to Settings > General > Background App Refresh to manage at will.
9. Burst Mode for Photos
iOS 7's camera includes a new 'Burst Mode' wherein you simply hold down the shutter button and your iPhone will take multiple pictures in rapid succession until you let off the shutter. This can be quite handy for catching just the right shot. However, for those of you that had learned to stabilize your camera by holding down the shutter button instead of tapping it, this can result in a lot of unexpected pictures. This feature appears to be enabled full-time whether you want it or not, so we will all need to simply learn to adapt.
10. Take Square Pictures
iOS 7's camera has a whole new interface that will become immediately apparent the first time you launch the camera. One of the new picture modes is the ability to take square pictures regardless of whether you're holding your iPhone in portrait or landscape orientations. This can be handy for several purposes, including future Instagram sharing. To enable this, simply slide the selector available beneath the viewer window.
11. Photo Filters add Mojo
Apple has taken inspiration from many popular photo apps by incorporating live filters right into the camera. As you can see for yourself, Apple's built-in filters provide some subtle effects which you can preview in real-time before you snap your shot.
12. AirDrop
This one's not entirely hidden, but we wanted to share it nonetheless. AirDrop allows you to share data wirelessly with other nearby iPhone users. You enable it by swiping up from the bottom of the screen to activate the Control Center. Once it is on, then you will show up as a destination for other local iPhones and iPads. This does not require you both to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, but doesn't yet have interoperability with Macs, only other iOS users.

Email and Share Photos with Windows Essentials

Two of the best tools in Windows Essentials make it easy to share photos in what ever way suits you. Windows Live Mail can send special photo emails that will never get refused because of attachment size limits, while Photo Gallery gives easy access to sharing sites such as Flickr(www.flickr.com), which now gives you an amazing 1TB of free online storage and lets you keep your photos private. Download Windows Essentials from www.snipca.com/9566, sign up for a free Microsoft account, then sign into Windows Mail.

STEP 1 Photo Gallery will find your photos automatically, including any shared with you by other users on the computer. You can make the photos easier to browse by using Photo Gallery to show your photos by date, not folder. Start Photo Gallery, click the top-left blue menu button and click Options. Select both options in the Navigation Pane section of the General tab. Click OK and two extra menus will appear in the left column. Use the arrows that appear as you move over years to expand the menus to show months and then days.
Email and Share Photos with Windows Essentials
STEP 2 Select the Photos you want to send by clicking the small box that appears when the mouse moves over a photo. To select a range of photos, click the first you want to send, hold down shift and click the last photo. To add extra photos to an existing selection, hold down Ctrl when you click on photos. Once you have selected all the photos you want to send, click the ‘Photo email’ button on the right of the Home Ribbon tab.
Email and Share Photos with Windows Essentials
STEP 3 Your Photos will appear in a new message. Enter the email addresses to which you would like to send the message and give it a subject. You can type a message above the photo album. Click the ‘Enter album name here’ text and give the album a name. This will help you find it online later (see Step 7). Click the‘Add more photos’box at the end of the album list if you realise that you have missed any. A dialogue box will appear letting you select more photos. Click Open to add them to the email.
Email and Share Photos with Windows Essentials
STEP 4 Change the appearance of the photo album by clicking the Format tab in the Photo Album Tools section of the Ribbon in the email. Click the bottom down arrow in the ‘Album styles’ section of this Ribbon tab to see the available layouts. Click one to select it. The paper clip icon will convert the message into an ordinary message with attachments, which is something to avoid if you don’t want the message rejected for being too big.
Email and Share Photos with Windows Essentials
STEP 5 Setting the correct size of your photos is very important, especially if you expect the recipient to print them. Click the ‘Large (1600px)’ button right of ‘Album styles’ and choose Original. The 1600px size will only give acceptable quality for 6x4-inch print outs and will look progressively worse as the size is increased.Conversely, if the recipient will open the email on their mobile phone, you should choose Medium (600px) to avoid using up their data allowance.
Email and Share Photos with Windows Essentials
STEP 6 The message to the right of the large button shows you that the photo album will be available online for 90 days. Click the button to remove the orange background and the album will never expire. Click ‘Album privacy’ and deselect the top option if you want recipients to be able to forward the album onto their friends. Select the bottom option if you want to include extra information about the photos, including location. Click OK then Send.
Email and Share Photos with Windows Essentials
STEP 7 If you think someone might have got hold of the link without your permission or you just want to stop sharing the album, sign in at www.skydrive.com with your Microsoft account and click the photo album. Click Sharing in the top bar. Click ‘People with a view link’ and then click ‘Remove permissions’. Check the change by ensuring that the ‘People with a view link’ entry has disappeared from the Permissions section. The link will stop working, although the recipient of the email will still have permission if they have a Microsoft account.Remove them by clicking their email address on the left and then ‘Remove permissions’.
Email and Share Photos with Windows Essentials
STEP 8 You can Share Your photos more publically using Facebook. In Photo Gallery, select the photos you want to include as in Step 2 and click the Facebook icon in the Share box in the Home Ribbon tab. You will need to give your Microsoft account permission to access your Facebook account.Select the tasks that you are happy for it to perform and confirm the permissions. Give the new album a name and description. Choose how visible you want your album to be using the Everyone drop down menu. Click Publish and your photos will be published on your Facebook Timeline.
Email and Share Photos with Windows Essentials
STEP 9 Photo gallery can back up your photos online to the free 1TB of space provided by Flickr. The process is much easier if you sign into Flickr in your web browser before you start. In Photo Gallery, select the photos you want to upload and click the Flickr icon in the Share section. You may need to click the down arrow to show all the sharing options. A message will appear asking for authorisation. Click the Authorise button. Your web browser will start and ask you to authorise the access to your account. Check the details and click ‘OK, I will authorise it’. A code number will appear. Type this into the Photo Gallery window with the hyphens and click Next.
Email and Share Photos with Windows Essentials
STEP 10 The publish to FLICKR options will appear. Check the account is correct and select ‘Create new set’ in the Photo sets’ drop down menu. Give the set a name and description and click Create. Leave ‘Photo size’ as Original and choose who should be able to see the photos in the Permissions menu. Click Publish when you arre happy with the settings and your files will be uploaded. How long this takes will depend on the number and size of the photos. Click Close when it has finished. Your photos are now on Flickr.

Mac OS X Lion Maintenance and Tips

Just upgrading to Lion will do your Mac the world of good. It has a slightly smaller footprint than Snow Leopard and will make your machine run faster too.

1) Learn gestures
Spend a few minutes in System Preferences watching the video in your Trackpad section. Here you’ll find guides on all of the new gestures. A good grip of these and you’ll be a much more savvy Mac user in no time.
2) Protect your kids
Setting up Parental controls is easier than ever on a Mac. Go to System Preferences where you can limit the time your kids spend online, as well as monitoring the apps they use and information they can access.
3) Set up keyboard shortcuts for apps
You can quickly and easily set up shortcuts for apps like Mission Control and Launch Pad. This gives you an extra-quick way of launching them. Set this up in seconds using your System Preferences.
4) Clean your machine
The biggest piece of advice for Mac users is to do a bit of housekeeping now and again. It may sound monotonous but just making sure you don’t let your Machine fill with clutter will keep it feeling fresh and fast. It also means you avoid that horrible moment when your Mac warns you that you are nearly out of drive space and you then need to have a panic induced clear-out.
5) AppleJack your Mac
Another essential tip is that every Mac user should immediately download AppleJack to their machine and begin using it right away. This little script will instantly clear your machine of unnecessary junk like caches and VRAM. Run AppleJack regularly to keep on top of errant files and keep your Mac in tip-top condition – the free script can breathe life into the oldest machines.
6) Update your apps
Updating apps is key. As well as making sure your system runs smoothly by ironing out any bugs or security issues, software
updates can include some great new features, so you’re effectively getting an upgrade for free. Much like doing the ironing, the longer you leave it to update your software, the bigger the job gets, so always try and check for any software updates once a week.
7) Delete files safely
As a safety precaution, always make sure you do a Secure Empty Trash when disposing of any files you want to get rid of, as this helps make sure that those files are permanently erased. It’s also a good idea to make the effort to use Disk Utility to erase free space on your drive, so you know for a fact that no one can gain access to your old files. This also helps to speed up your machine, which is never a bad thing.

Windows 7 Secrets Which Makes Work Easy

1) Rename Files Quickly
If you're working through a series of files and renaming them newly imported digital camera images. for example: don't hit Enter after you have finished typing. Instead, tap Tab to instantly jump to the next filename, which will be automatically selected for editing. This works in all list and icon view modes. of file browsing windows, although not on the desktop.

2) Retheme Online
Don't like the built-in themes(i.e, wallpapers, colour schemes and system sounds)? There are lots more official available just a download away - visit windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/themes. Once you've downloaded the theme just click it once to install it. interestingly for those who travel, you will find the equivalent of the United Kingdom theme for other countries.

3) Use A Desktop Ominibar
Right-click the taskbar and then select Properties. In the dialog box that appears, click the Toolbars tab. Then out a tick alongside Address and click OK. You should now see an address field on your taskbar into which you can paste or type the usual web addresses, to have them open in the system default browser. You can also type phrases that will automatically be searched in Bing (there does not seem to be a way to switch to Google), and also enter hard disk paths to open a file browsing window at that location (i.e. something like C:\users\lceir).

4) Switch Printers Automatically
Here's a tip if you use the same laptop at home and at work. Ever got frustrated when you try to print something at home and Windows automatically defaults to your office Laserjet? To avoid this you can make Windows set different default printers depending on which network your PC is connected to. To set this useful feature up, get yourself to the Start menu, then click Devices and Printers. In the window that appears. select one of the printers and click the Manage Default Printers entry in the menu. This will open a dialog bot with two dropdown lists - the first lets you select a network. and the second lets you select a printer to default to whenever you're connected. Click Add when you've made your choices. Every network that you connect to can have its own choice ideal if you are a 'multi-homing' worker!

5) Get The Ultimate Control Panel
Talking of finding all the configuration options in one place. You might be used to enabling God mode in games but did you know Windows has one too? just create a new folder somewhere, then rename it as follows:
GodMode.{ED7BA47O-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
This will create a magical folder called GodMode. Similar to God mode in games, Window's GodMode allows you to cheat because it lists several hundred settings that you can tweak, plus useful help files. There's nothing here that you won’t find scattered elsewhere within Windows but that's the point - GodMode brings everything together in organised lists for the sake of efficiency. Plus, considering that many Windows features are ferreted away and rarely it ever see the light of day. GodMode is a pretty neat way of exploring what options are actually available. To get rid of the GodMode folder. just delete it.

6) Minimize With A Shake
This is one of those features that's bizarre, yet potentially life-Saving. To minimize all but the current window, click and hold its taskbar and shake the mouse from left to right. Give it a try! It works in reverse too, and will maximise the windows you have just minimised in this way.

5 tips for working with Alfred on Mac

Alfred is a wonderful addition to a standard Spotlight search which makes your work on Mac simpler and more effective. Whether you’re an experienced Alfred user or just get acquainted with this application, here’re 5 tips for working with it.

1. Start using open and find commands

By default Alfred decides independently what to do with the founded file or application when you click on it. But if you type the open or find command before your request, then Alfred, correspondingly, will launch or will show you the file in Finder.

By the way, you may not even type open command. Instead of it, just put a space or ‘ sign before your request.
2. In command searches for information in files

If you don’t remember in which document you have written down the recipe of a new dish, then the command In is something that will surely help you.

3. Learn the commands that help you manage your Mac

At your disposal there’s a whole list of standard functions: Lock, logout, sleep, screensaver, restart, shutdown, trash, emptytrash, etc. You may find other commands by the path Alfred → Features → System Commands. Also there you may change the shortcuts for the commands.

Don’t forget that on typing them autofill is running, so you don’t have to type full commands.
4. Type in only key letters from the names of the apps

If you have a lot of programs with similar names installed on your Mac, then you only need to type in the key letters. For example, if you want to find Photo Booth app, you may type photo b, but also you may simply type pb.
5. Hide Alfred from the upper menu

As you can launch Alfred any time by a shortcut Option+Space, it’s not necessary to keep it in the upper menu. You can hide it via the settings. Also in the settings you may hide the Hat icon from the search window.
P.S. If you work with Alfred, then you may hide the Spotlight icon from the upper menu. In order to do that, launch terminal and insert the following command:

$ sudo chmod 600 /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Search

To bring the icon back insert the following:

$ sudo chmod 755 /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Search]

And don’t forget to reload menu each time with this command:

$ killall SystemUIServer
