Candy Letter Recognition Game

Despite my best efforts to polish it off after the kids have gone to bed, we still have a TON of Halloween candy. Since my kids like dumping the candy out, sorting it, and gazing at it lovingly almost as much as they like actually eating it, we used it for a simple letter recognition activity. All you need are alphabet cards (or index cards) and a bucket of Halloween candy.

Sink or Float Candy Science

After painting with candy and doing some candy math, we also had to try some candy science. This is a simple sink or float experiment, but the kids loved it because of the candy. It's simple to put together and the only materials required are pen and paper, a selection of candy bars, and a bowl of water. It's a great way to teach children about forming hypotheses and testing their ideas and also a nice way to use up all that Halloween loot.

Painting with Candy: Nerds Watercolor Trees

I'm excited to be participating in Play~Learn~Imagine's candy series. Throughout the week, some great bloggers are sharing over 30 ways to create, learn, and explore with candy. Today's topic is painting with candy. Our contribution is colorful fall watercolor trees made with Nerds. They're fun to make and almost any colorful candy will do, so it's a great way to use up candy from your kids' trick-or-treat bags without actually eating it.

Instead of eating all that Halloween candy, kids can use it to make colorful fall trees.

Jack-o'-Lantern Collages Preschool Craft

My preschooler really looks forward to carving pumpkins every year. Since it seems a little early for that, we made a jack-o'-lantern collage craft instead. It was a fun, easy craft that had the added bonus of him not begging me to use a "real knife" the entire time we were doing it.

Easy Dress Up Hats {Paper Plate Craft}

We checked out a cute book from the library called Halloween Hats.  In rhyming text the book describes all the types of hats you might see on Halloween.  The neighborhood kids (with their hats, of course) gather at the same party where they play a fun game that involves switching hats and celebrating their now mixed-up costumes.
