Early Review: A Bad For Sunshine by Darynda Jones

Posted on Mar 28, 2020 with 1 comment

New York Times bestselling author Darynda Jones is back with the first novel in the brand-new snarky, sassy, wickedly fun Sunshine Vicram seriesA Bad Day for Sunshine!

Sheriff Sunshine Vicram finds her cup o’ joe more than half full when the small village of Del Sol, New Mexico, becomes the center of national attention for a kidnapper on the loose.
Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, its strong cups of coffee—and a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff—an election her adorably meddlesome parents entered her in—and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. But a teenage girl is missing, a kidnapper is on the loose, and all of it's reminding Sunny why she left Del Sol in the first place. Add to that trouble at her daughter’s new school and a kidnapped prized rooster named Puff Daddy, and Sunshine has her hands full.
Enter sexy almost-old-flame Levi Ravinder and a hunky US Marshal, both elevens on a scale of one to blazing inferno, and the normally savvy sheriff is quickly in over her head. Now it’s up to Sunshine to juggle a few good hunky men, a not-so-nice kidnapping miscreant, and Doug the ever-pesky flasher. And they said coming home would be drama-free.

Amazingly wonderful! Jones delivers another fabulous series with just the right balance of comedy, mystery, and steaminess. This unique mystery is set in the town of Del Sol, filled to the brim with secrets. Whispered pasts are entrenched into this new mystery on different levels. Sunshine will have to come face to face with her past as she moves back to her hometown with her daughter. The flavor of the town weaves into this small-town mystery. It's bursting at the seams with lively characters and their stories. There is so much more to learn about Sunshine and Levi. They left me breathless each time they encountered each other. Prepare to have unexpected outbursts of laughter as you visit Del Sol and meet its residents.

Early Review: Say You're Sorry by Karen Rose

Posted on Jan 25, 2019 with 1 comment

Introducing the first book in the new pulse-pounding Sacramento series from New York Times bestselling author Karen Rose.

FBI Special Agent Gideon Reynolds did not have a conventional upbringing. Raised in a cult in Northern California, his mother smuggled him out when he was thirteen, and he never saw her again. It is not a bit of history he is keen on sharing, but being guarded has not gotten him any closer to what he really wants: a family.

Daisy Dawson lived a sheltered childhood. Her father, a former military man, believed that the woman he loved and her daughter were being hunted, so he took extreme measures to keep his family safe. But despite his best efforts, Daisy is done being scared. New to Sacramento, she is ready to jump headfirst into life--until she is attacked one night.

Gideon is caught unawares by Daisy, who is unlike any victim he has ever met. But the attacker is far from finished, and tracking him will threaten to pull Gideon back to the world he fought so hard to leave...

Say You're Sorry is thrilling! This non-stop chiller will keep you turning the pages.  Daisy Dawson has to fight for her life as she battles her attacker.  She soon realizes she has come away with a necklace from around the killer's neck. Gideon Reynold, an FBI agent is interested in Daisy's attack. There is a serial killer on the loose and Daisy may be the only one that can help the FBI find the madman.  Gideon and Daisy make a great team.  They have jaded pasts that add dimension to their characters.  Say You're Sorry has its dark moments.  You view much from the eyes of the antagonist and at times it can be overbearing. Eventually, it leads
to a comprehensive view of the world of a killer. I look forward to reading more in the Sacramento series by Rose.

Early Review: Consumed (Firefighters #1) by J.R. Ward

Posted on Sep 21, 2018 with No comments

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the popular Black Dagger Brotherhood series comes a brand-new novel about arson investigator, Ann Ashburn, who is consumed by her troubled past, her family's scorched legacy, and her current case: chasing a deadly killer.
Anne Ashburn is a woman consumed...
By her bitter family legacy, by her scorched career as a firefighter, by her obsession with department bad-boy Danny McGuire, and by a new case that pits her against a fiery killer.
Strong-willed Anne was fearless and loved the thrill of fighting fires, pushing herself to be the best. But when one risky decision at a warehouse fire changes her life forever, Anne must reinvent not only her job, but her whole self.
Shattered and demoralized, Anne finds her new career as an arson investigator a pale substitute for the adrenaline-fueled life she left behind. She doesn't believe she will ever feel that same all-consuming passion for her job again--until she encounters a string of suspicious fires setting her beloved city ablaze.
Danny McGuire is a premiere fireman, best in the county, but in the midst of a personal meltdown. Danny is taking risks like never before and seems to have a death wish until he teams up with Anne to find the fire starter. But Danny may be more than a distraction, and as Anne narrows in on her target, the arsonist begins to target her.

From the creator of the bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood, get ready for a new band of brothers. And a firestorm . . .

What an interesting new story-line by the fabulous J.R. Ward!  Danny and Anne burn bright!  I was glued to this story as Anne and Danny's tragic and horrific journey began!  Oh, how Ward can weave a tale. From the very beginning, the story grabbed a hold and would not let go.   Consumed unearths an array of emotion from both the characters and you the reader.  Both the main and the secondary characters will have you pondering their lives long after you have finished reading.   I can not wait to read more.

What an interesting mystery! I love the fact that I never knew what direction the story
was leading me in. One moment I thought I had an idea and then I was taken in a different direction. Twist and turns ignite a wonderful need to the turn the pages, to learn more. I wanted to strangle Catherine many times throughout the story. I felt Lydia was far too forgiving and just tolerated much from her sister. I wish we had learned more about Lydia and her powers. There is an entire story waiting for us there. I felt there were many questions left to the reader's imagination. Although this mystery had its dark and sorrowful moments, it also had a sweet romance weaved throughout. I can't wait to read more from Hester Fox.

And a coyote shapeshifter.

And the mate of the Alpha of the Columbia Basin werewolf pack.

Even so, none of that would have gotten me into trouble if, a few months ago, I hadn’t stood upon a bridge and taken responsibility for the safety of the citizens who lived in our territory. It seemed like the thing to do at the time. It should have only involved hunting down killer goblins, zombie goats, and an occasional troll. Instead, our home was viewed as neutral ground, a place where humans would feel safe to come and treat with the fae.

The reality is that nothing and no one is safe. As generals and politicians face off with the Gray Lords of the fae, a storm is coming and her name is Death.

But we are pack, and we have given our word.

Darkest Night by Tara Thomas is the first in the Sons of Broad series.  I had high hopes this mystery would carry me away. Set in the middle of Charleston, South Carolina, with all its southern charm and mystery, lies a story of lost love and buried secrets.  I thought Keaton and Tilly were well matched, but the story felt a bit choppy.  This small town mystery left us with  a few loose ends and questions.  I would like to continue reading the series. There's a yearning to learn the identity of "The Gentleman". He seems hell bent on revenge and has more victims on his or her list.
