QUICK SPINS
SZA – Ctrl
The long-awaited debut from Top Dawg Entertainment’s top
queen has finally arrived and SZA slices through every stigma any woman in
hip-hop has ever faced. Arriving with one of the best debuts in recent memory,
the rapper blends R&B, soul, funk, into her autobiographical LP. Featuring
Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Isaiah Rashad, among others, she pulls her
influences from Tupac to the Fugees to Odd Future to give the new school a
taste of the old in an artistic manner.
FINAL GRADE: A
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Murder of the Universe
The second of three albums coming this year from the
powerful and masterful Australian psyche band hears them progressing their
vision just a bit further.
FINAL GRADE: A-
Portugal. The Man – Woodstock
It has been over four years since Portugal. The Man have
released a new record which makes it the longest gap between music releases
this band has had. That being said, the band take all of their influences from
The Beatles, Oasis, and Wu-Tang and blend them together while still using their
musical fingerprints to create a solid record that attracts new fans and
pleases older ones.
FINAL GRADE: B+
The Drums – Abysmal Thoughts
Hands down the best Drums record since their fantastic 2010
debut. Johnny Pierce brings his surf rock meets 80s New Wave sound to new
heights and clarity with his most succinct and sharpest lyrics as of yet. A
perfect record for fun in the sun and sulking in a corner – which is the total
opposite but Pierce makes it possible.
FINAL GRADE: B+
Color Film – Living Arraignments
Glassjaw, United Nations, Head Automatica frontman Darryl
Palumbo debuted Color Film in 2014 and since then, the project has remained
quiet until earlier this year when they announced they were finally putting a
record out. Living Arraignments is a New Wave record done right for the 21st
Century. Unlike the poppy neo-New Wave sound he created in Head Automatica,
Palumbo makes Color Film’s music a bit more dramatic but just as interesting.
FINAL GRADE: B+
London Grammar – Truth is a Beautiful Thing
The long awaited sophomore record from the moody London trio
has arrived and singer Hannah Reid sores beyond all expectations on how she
utilizes her voice. The lengthy record is a lot to digest in one sitting and her
lyrics about breakup and hope resonate with anyone but it is how she showcases
that unique voice of hers that captures everyone’s attention. The record does need a song that needs to be
not dramatic and a pop single but maybe we can hold out hope for those on album
No. 3.
FINAL GRADE: B
Lana Del Rey – Lust For Life
It was pretty bold for Del Rey to name her third record
after the iconic Iggy Pop album of the same name but she separates herself from
the pack. She still brings the moody and dark tones of her previous LPs but
this record does project the sound of hope and someone yearning to be heard.
FINAL GRADE: B
Beth Ditto – Fake Sugar
The long awaited debut album from the former Gossip
frontwoman gives us something that is not only her most personal work to date
but something of a glam, funk, country, pop record. Ditto tries it all on Fake
Sugar and succeeds most of the time.
FINAL GRADE: B
Roger Waters – Is This The Life You Really Want?
After nearly 20 years, the former Pink Floyd bassist has
returned with a new solo album and it comes at the perfect time. Waters’ timing
could not be more perfect. With everything that is going on in the world, the
outspoken activist has channeled his anger in a record that is both a gift to
fans but much needed for our era.
FINAL GRADE: B
Slowdive
After 22 years, Slowdive return with a new album that marks
their unique shoegaze sound going into a new era.
FINAL GRADE: B
Royal Blood – How Did We Get So Dark?
The British rock duo return with their second record and
pick up right where they acclaimed debut left off. Packed with more thunderous
riffs and stadium sized songs, Royal Blood are one of the only true new rock
and roll bands around and they don’t even have a guitar.
FINAL GRADE: B
Ride – Weather Diaries
21 years since they last graced us with their pioneering
shoegaze sound, Ride returns right where they left off. This go around,
however, it feels as if Andy Bell took some of the queues he got while playing
in Oasis and crafted some anthems for the jilted generation.
FINAL GRADE: B
Fleet Foxes – Crack-Up
The Seattle lo-fi band return with a record that makes you
wonder if nature had a soundtrack what would it be? The answer: Crack-Up.
FINAL GRADE: B-
Dan Auerbach – Waiting on a Song
The Black Keys frontman goes solo for the second time with a
blues record that gives him a little more room to breathe from his main band.
Auerbach has a command over his songwriting but still sticks to the style we
have all grown accustomed to.
FINAL GRADE: B-
KMFDM – Yeah! EP
The fact that KMFDM are still creating pulse pounding beats,
songs, and heavy riffs as they get older is an accomplishment on its own. The
German industrial legends return with an EP that still sticks to the blueprint
of what they have created over the years but also pushes them into the modern
era as well as making them one of the most aggressive and loudest acts still
around.
FINAL GRADE: B-
Jeff Tweedy – Together At Last
The Wilco frontman goes solo and crafts an Americana record
that only he could make.
FINAL GRADE: B-
Alt-J – Relaxer
It is a new Alt-J record. Have you heard the previous two?
Well, then you also heard their latest.
FINAL GRADE: D
Phoenix – Ti Amo
The French alternative rockers return with a new record and
take inspiration from Italian disco, which they carry, that motif out through
their entire collection of latest tunes. However, the issue with this album is
that they should have hired Giorgio Moroder or Nile Rodgers to aide them with
how to create a funky sound because this record not only lacks energy it takes
such an exciting subgenre that is full of life and kills it.
FINAL GRADE: D

He doesn’t need it!” In the same interview, artist Jamie Hewlett spoke about how he and Albarn reunited the animated band after their massive 2010 tour which saw them take a very long break and not speak to one another for a while. "We went to some party and in a drunken conversation, he said, ‘Do you want to do more Gorillaz?’ And I said ‘Yeah, do you?’ And he said ‘Yeah.’ And I said ‘Right, then.’ That was the end of the conversation.”

Celebrating the release of Be Here Now's 20th anniversary, Noel Gallagher is saying that Oasis should have waited longer to make their third album. He said in a video for the band's VEVO channel: "I only say this now, looking back on it after 20 years.... we should never have made that record then," he admits. "'Cause we came off the back of that American tour which was, again, the third tour in a row that we never completed. And I came back to the airport and the fucking world's press was there and instead of going, 'Right, we should just go our separate ways for a year or two,' we decided like idiots to go straight into the studio. That maybe wasn't the best idea, you know what I mean? 'Cause 'Morning Glory' hadn't really run its course then. It was probably still Number One in England it was definitely still Top Five in the States. And yet, there we were, going into the studio, effectively trying to to make another album to kill it, which was ridiculous."

She took to her website to explain: "Singing this album has been intense and the internal clock of it different to the other ones. It has sort of had to behave in its own little way. both the urgency of the leak and now this sudden closure for reasons beyond my control is characteristic of that. I hope through the years i have earned enough tour karma points to get your support for this." She then mentioned that new material is already being written. He then said, "The great thing about the idea, the concept of the project, is that it can be anywhere because every city has some sort of musical history, but I don’t know. Of all places in the world England and the UK just seems like it would be shooting fish in a barrel. There’s just so fucking much here."
Disclosure will release their new album, Caracal in September. Take a look at the cover, below:

QUICK SPINS
D’Angelo – Black Messiah
After 14 years, the reclusive talent known as D’Angelo
finally emerges with a record that sings the songs of our times. Black Messiah
is a social exploration in lyrics, a experimentation in sound, and an exciting
collection of songs that show he still has got the chops to craft some fine
work. While vocally it is a far cry from his VooDoo days, D’Angelo makes up for
it in the music department strumming away on guitar, slamming on his piano and
bringing basslines that would be sensual to anyone. Produced by Questlove and
with help from Q-Tip, D’Angelo may have kept fans waiting a long time, it was
worth the wait.
FINAL GRADE: A
Ghostface Killah – 36 Seasons
Last year, Ghostface Killah teamed up with Adrien Younge and
released one of the finest hip-hop albums of the last 10 years with 12 Reasons
to Die, a concept record about a mafia henchmen who dies and comes back from
the dead like a superhero and gets his vengeance on his killers. Now, Ghost has
done it again with 36 Seasons, this time Ghost is another superhero named Tony
Starks as he returns to his old neighborhood after years of being away and
gives us a story that Hollywood wishes they had written. A masterful work with
visual storytelling through hip-hop.
FINAL GRADE: A
Vince Staples – Hell Can Wait
The Long Beach, California, emcee has been making a name for
himself in the underground for a handful of years, now, on his debut EP, Hell
Can Wait, he flexes serious muscle of what is to come.
FINAL GRADE: A
Vining Hill – Smoke
The debut album from New England’s Vining Hill has been a
long time coming. Smoke is a record draped in fantastic dark hooks,
thumping rhythms, murky themes, but most of all, it is the last great rock
record to end the year.
FINAL GRADE: A-
Oh Land – Earth Sick
The Danish delight known as Oh Land gives us a record that
was done totally DIY from writing and recording in her Brooklyn apartment to a
crowdfunding via PledgeMusic, Earth Sick shows that doing it on your own may be
your best option.
FINAL GRADE: A-
Bobby Shmurda – Shmurda She Wrote
Bobby Shmurda had everything going for him in 2014, with a
hot song, big career boost then things went bust when he was arrested in a gang
connection and his alleged arsenal of weapons he had could get him locked up
for a long time. While he has pled not guilty, Schmurda She Wrote might be the
only thing we hear from him for a long time and if that is the case, it is the
classic story of wasted talent. This EP is a window into what could have been a
very promising career.
FINAL GRADE: B+
Parkay Quarts – Content Nausea
The New York garage rock darlings Parquet Courts give their second album
inside a year as the cleverly titled “Parkay Quarts.” It is another display of
smart-ass lyrics, catchy riffs, and a throwback to the New York City of old.
FINAL GRADE: B+
…and You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead – IX
The ninth album from the prog, math rockers is another taste
of their ability to stun a crowd using the power of a studio the same way they
do it when they play in concert. IX is another offering to their growing
catalogue that shows how important to indie rock they continue to be.
FINAL GRADE: B
XRMST
The hardcore side project of Davey and Jade from AFI is
exactly what you may think – bone crunching and melodic but also another way
these two continue to show their versatility.
FINAL GRADE: B
No Devotion
The former members of the embarrassed LostProphets try to
save face in the music world by bringing former Thursday front man Geoff
Rickley on board for a new band that ventures into standard alternative rock
and is an attempt at forgetting the past and healing for the future.
FINAL GRADE: B
Calvin Harris – Motion
Calvin Harris released another Calvin Harris record – now go
dance!
FINAL GRADE: B-
Wu-Tang Clan – A Better Tomorrow
It has been seven long years since a new Wu-Tang record that
featured all the surviving members, but A Better Tomorrow, despite it’s
controversial recording sessions, internal beef among members, and musical
diversity is here. A Better Tomorrow is not the same Wu-Tang that made 36
Chambers or Wu-Tang Forever, they are grown up now, some have families, some
have successful solo careers, some are doing things outside of music, but
together, the most disorganized hip-hop collective in history coming together
is still pleasing to a fan’s ear. With all of the chaos in creating this album,
for what it is worth, it is a way to possibly say goodbye with their heads held
up high.
FINAL GRADE: B-
Smashing Pumpkins – Monuments to an Elegy
The second installment to the Pumpkins Teardrops by
Kaleidyscope triology is actually some of the best material they have released
in a very long time. While nothing is groundbreaking here, the biggest surprise
is that Billy Corgan has Tommy Lee pounding the drums on this record, which,
could be the reason that has made all of the difference in why this record is
not a total musical embarrassment for whatever incarnation Corgan has of his
90’s band.
FINAL GRADE: B-
Pink Floyd – The Endless River
For the first time in 20 years, Pink Floyd fans were treated
to a new album, a record that was shelved for years during the sessions of The
Division Bell, and while it is nice to realize that we got new sounds from the
classic rockers, there was a reason why it never saw the light of day for 20
years.
FINAL GRADE: D
Nicki Minaj – The Pinkprint
Nicki Minaj had a blockbuster 2014, no doubt about that, but
Nicki is a single’s artist and this record proves that. The Pinkprint is a flat
record that falls victim to the “Let’s throw as much shit on the wall and see
what sticks” idea of how some pop stars make records these days.
FINAL GRADE: D
Azealia Banks – Broke With Expensive Taste
The debut album from what was once a promising voice in
hip-hop finally arrives because after alleged hold-ups from her label, Banks
released it herself and unfortunately the album doesn’t inspire nearly as much
as her EP’s or singles did when they arrived two years ago. It looks like the
once hot artist has gone cold.

Quick News
Neil Young will release his new album, Storeytone in November.
For one night only, former Queens of the Stone Age bassist Nick Oliveri will rejoin Josh Homme and his old band during their Halloween concert at The Forum in L.A. When asked about how it came up, Oliveri told NME, "Josh asked me to come up and do six songs with Queens, like an encore set. A reunion, but not a reunion. I’m going to get up and play some bass and sing some songs at the end of the show. It should be an interesting night." He was then asked if he will do it again, Oliveri said, "That’s pretty much up to Josh. It’s his band, and when he pulls the trigger on something, it’s up to him. I put myself out there a few different times in the past 10 years at Queens shows. I’d go and see them play and say, ‘Hey man, I’m here! Do you want me to sing a song?’ I stopped asking him after a while, and then he asked me! It’s pretty much just when he wants to do something, these days. It’s not up to me, is what I’m saying."
Speaking to Uncut about the latest Pink Floyd record, David Gilmour said it is a tribute to late keyboardist Rick Wright saying, "When we finished 'The Division Bell' sessions, we had many pieces of music, only nine of which had become songs on the LP," he says. "Now with Rick gone and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right these revisited tracks tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire. "It is a tribute to him. I mean, to me, it's very evocative and emotional in a lot of moments. And listening to all the stuff made me regret his passing all over again. This is the last chance someone will get to hear him playing along with us on that way he did."
Bruce Springsteen will reissue his first seven albums on remastered CD and vinyl this November. The box set titled, The Album Collection Vol 1 1973-1984, is the first time these records have been bundled together and will come with a 60-page book.
Speaking to Carson Daly, Kendrick Lamar has stated that he hopes for his sophomore album to arrive before the end of the year. Lamar said, "I’m hoping to push it out before 2015. I’m gonna say that. I’m working hard in the studio.”
AC/DC will release their new album, Rock or Bust, this December. It will be the first album without founding member Malcolm Young, who has left the band while he battled an undisclosed illness.
