QUICK SPINS

GlassjawMaterial Control

In their first release in 15 years, the Long Island vets come back with a bang. With nearly a new lineup, Glassjaw deliver a one-two punch that not only pulverizes the listener, it also pushes them into new territory. This is the type of record where longtime fans will appreciate and new fans will love.
FINAL GRADE: A

Four Tet New Energy

The brilliance of Four Tet should never be questioned and this surprise release album is certainly one that creates a musical landscape for the listeners to travel to without leaving their home.
FINAL GRADE: A

Dirty OrangeXXX EP

Dirty Orange have released brand new EP from one of London’s most uncanny and ruthless new bands. The trio brings forth more of the rawness of underground garage rock and continues to not only be one of the more exciting rock and roll bands around but also the most real.
FINAL GRADE: A

Converge The Dusk In Us

Five years since their last release, Converge return and like a jackhammer just slam the listener deeper into levels of darkness, chaos, and brutality. Even as they get older, Converge still know how to get a listeners attention.
FINAL GRADE: A-

MastodonCold Dark Place EP

The Georgia metal monster return with their second release of the year and while Cold Dark Place is an EP, it picks up where their latest record, Emperor of Sand, left off.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Robert Plant Carry Fire

The former Led Zeppelin singer does not get enough credit for his magnificent solo work and Carry Fire is a prime example of that. At his age, Plant can just retire and also stick to what works, but Carry Fire is a musical soundscape filled with experimental sounds and magic.
FINAL GRADE: A-

King Krule The Ooz

The British beatmaker and producer is back with his new album, The Ooz, and while the sounds go forth in very interesting and intricate directions, it tends to get a bit redundant. Yet, even in his repetition, he remains a fascinating figure with boundary-pushing releases.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Marilyn Manson Heaven Upside Down

The self-proclaimed “God of Fuck” returned with one of his best records in years. Heaven Upside Down came after numerous delays and may have been worth the wait. The shock rocker bares his soul and political feelings and while he has never held anything back, on Heaven Upside Down, he has fully unleashed a new beast.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Mavis StaplesIf All I Was Was Black

The iconic soul singer raises the bar on not just protest music but also doesn’t hold back on how the system has wronged her and African-Americans in this country. It is one of the most heartbreaking and raw albums of the year and her career.
FINAL GRADE: B+

StarsThere is No Love in Fluorescent Light

Stars have always been a band that celebrates life and their latest is a testament to that. In our turbulent times, it is nice to let your hair down once in a while and be thankful you are alive and this record reminds us to do just that.
FINAL GRADE: B+

U2Songs of Experience

After a series of setbacks, delays and massive tours, U2 finally released Songs of Experience. The album is one that takes multiple listens to fully digest as Bono looks for hope and pleasure in his life and finds it in his loved ones. While its predecessor, Songs of Innocence, was about U2 growing up, this record is how they stayed together and how their influences like family, America, politics, and rock and roll, kept them going for so long.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Talib Kweli Radio Silence

The iconic Brooklyn emcee returned with one his best albums. Radio Silence is a look at today while paying homage to the 90s hip-hop era where Kweli cut his teeth. For those in the new school, this is a record about how you maintain longevity.
FINAL GRADE: B

Cool KidsSpecial Edition Grandmaster Deluxe

The Chicago hip-hop duo return after nearly a decade away from the scene and while hip-hop has changed, they stay true to themselves.
FINAL GRADE: B

BjorkUtopia

Following her break-up record, Vulnicura, Bjork returns with a record about trying to find new love at her age and in a new era. Utopia is part pop record, part experimental, part celebratory but it is all pure Bjork.
FINAL GRADE: B

N.E.R.D. No One Ever Really Dies

The iconic alternative hip-hop group returns and as Pharrell and Chad Hugo give a series of fun and party starting beats, the record does take serious turns with guest appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, and Frank Ocean.
FINAL GRADE: B

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying BirdsWho Built The Moon?

On his third solo record, Gallagher tries to become more experimental than ever before and there are moments where it works and other times it sounds like someone who is doing it just for the sake of being strange. The records best moments are when Gallagher sticks to the guns that helped skyrocket his career.
FINAL GRADE: B-

SqueezeThe Knowledge

The rock vets return and while they are still going at a steadfast pace at their age they are not bringing anything new to the table and sticking with what works, which is why in 2017, a Squeeze record is more for longtime fans rather than new ones.
FINAL GRADE: B-

StereophonicsScream Above the Sounds

The Welsh band, who were once on top of the world, sound bored and dull on their latest. Scream Above the Sounds feels like a record putting out new music because they feel as if they have to and not want to.
FINAL GRADE: C

EminemRevival

The iconic rapper returns to take on the Trump administration and while his effort is valiant, it doesn’t require a full record. Revival sounds like a pop record infused with rap trying its hardest to be a protest album. While the bars and intensity is there, the cramming of too many styles makes the message sound forced.
FINAL GRADE: C-

MorrisseyLow in High School

The former Smiths singer returned with a cheeky new record but as the years have gone one, the caliber of his records has withered. Morrissey has not sounded inspired, excited, and interesting in nearly a decade and Low in High School is just more songs about self loathing and frustration. Yet, maybe after a series of headline making problems, cancelled shows, and controversies, Morrissey’s biggest problem is himself.
FINAL GRADE: D

Underrated Classic: Morrissey 'Ringleader of the Tormentors'

In the mid-2000s, Morrissey went through a sort of career revival with the release of You are the Quarry in 2004. Two years later, he followed up on his success with Ringleader of the Tormentors. An indie rock opera of sorts as Moz enlisted longtime David Bowie producer Tony Visconti to work with him in Rome, Italy, on the album. The record would become the most personal, lyrically, for the former Smiths singer and the grandest in terms of production thanks to Visconti's vision. When the album arrived in the spring of 2006, it was well received by critics and fans and was propelled by the singles, "You Have Killed Me," "In The Future When All's Well," and "I Just Want to see the Boy Happy."  In the 11 years since, it has fallen off the radar among listeners. As the singer now tours in support of his new record, Low in High School, fans can look back at this as a turning point for the British musician. With a record full of lush philharmonic strings, clear cut themes and stories but also, such a different sound for someone who has been so miserable for a majority of his life.

Recommended Reading: Johnny Marr 'Set The Boy Free'

Last fall, Johnny Marr finally told his story and released his long-awaited autobiography, Set The Boy Free. The autobiography chronicled the influential guitarists discovery of music and what it was like growing up in the harsh city of Manchester, England. Yet, the world around him along with his passion to be a rock star led him to meet Steven Patrick Morrissey and form The Smiths. Marr details a vivid account of how the band rose to stardom, became one of the most influential acts of all time and then eventually disbanded, leaving many people to bed for a reunion.

While the rise and fall of The Smiths is not only heavily documented before Marr gave a first person account, what is fascinating in Set the Boy Free is Marr's rediscovery of music and working with bands like The The, Modest Mouse, The Cribs, as well as finding his own voice as a solo artist. Marr, who along with Morrissey, became one of the best songwriting duos in the history of music, brings that same touch to how he pens his life.

Adele gave some insider info to Vanity Fair about the writing of her latest, 25, saying: "Having a hangover with a child is torture." She explained that the hangover came from her time drinking when she wrote and recorded her mega classic, 21. The singer said: "I used to love to be drunk, but as I got more famous I would wake up the next morning and think, ‘What the fuck did I say and who the fuck did I say it to?’ I never had blackouts, but when you’re drunk and you go to a party, you’ll talk to anyone. I can see from an outsider’s perspective that I will never write songs as good as the ones that are on ’21’, but I’m not as indulgent as I was then, and I don’t have time to fall apart like I did then. I was completely off my face writing that album, and a drunk tongue is an honest one. I would drink two bottles of wine, and I would chain-smoke. Then I’d write the lyrics down and the next morning think, ‘Fuck, that’s quite good’. Then I’d find the melody.”

Interpol have teased fans with a return to the studio. The band could be writing and recording their sixth album after posting something coy on Twitter.

Afghan Whigs guitarist Dave Rosser has been diagnosed with colon cancer. The band announced 2 concerts, one in L.A. and one in New Orleans, later this month to help pay for his medical costs. In a statement, Whigs leader Greg Dulli said: "Dave Rosser has been my close friend and bandmate for over a decade now. By doing these shows for him we hope to ease any financial stress he may face as he pursues treatment to combat his illness. 100% of the proceeds for these shows will go to his medical care. I’m hopeful that folks will come out and show their support for Dave who will be performing with us.”

In his new autobiography, Set the Boy Free, Johnny Marr discusses how in 2008 he and Morrissey almost reformed The Smiths. The ball was in motion then suddenly Moz stopped returning the guitarist's calls for a reunion. Now, speaking to Radio 4, Marr said he is not interested in a reunion anymore. "People just don’t want to let go of this fractured band business,” he said. “You know, we were never gonna be together for 30-40 years. We weren’t REM, we weren’t U2, you know it’s just nonsense. We had 70 songs in the bank. That was enough. I’ll get on with doing movies and making records with other people and which is what I always wanted to do. So, I’m very happy with the way everything turned out.”

Iggy Pop has returned to the studio to work on the follow-up to his fantastic Post Pop Depression album. Telling Entertainment Weekly: "I’ve made five recordings since then…But they were all recordings not where I’m about, ‘Hey, I’ve got something to say!’ No, it was just, people called me up and said, ‘Do you want to do a vocal with me, about this, under this circumstance?’ More like guesting. I would prefer to do that for a while. You know, there are people I like. I like the people I’ve recorded with — I can’t tell you who they are! — very much."

Joey Bada$$ took to Instagram earlier in the week to confirm that his upcoming album, A.A.B.A., is "90 percent done." He alluded that following his current tour he will finish the upcoming LP.

Johnny Marr was asked by The Guardian which band he preferred working with the most and the former Smiths guitarist said Modest Mouse. He was with the band from 2006 to 2009 and said: "Yeah. People don’t believe it when I say that. I love Modest Mouse so much because the chemistry of those guys was a real brotherhood. They were a great American band, and I really wanted to be in a great American band.”

Mat Whitecross whose film Oasis: Supersonic chronicles the rise of the iconic British band said that the Gallagher brothers will reunite the group when "there is less pressure." He told Billboard: "But the way Noel talks about the fans at the end of the film is something he comes back to again and again. He’s very generous about their contribution, and I think he would do it for [the fans]. Noel has never said no, but he makes jokes about it. Liam says, ‘Come on, let’s get back on the road!’ He’s keen to do it. The reason it hasn’t happened earlier is they’re in a position of luxury. They’re both rich men. They don’t have to be chasing the opportunity to try and get back together. So hopefully if they do come back, it’ll be for the right reasons, and because they both want to do it.”

On Friday, President Obama called into Sway in the Morning and listed his favorite emcees from past and present. The Commander in Chief said: "I think the young guys, Kendrick and Chance [the Rapper] are doing amazing work. I love Drake, and the girls love Drake, and, you know, so, he’s commercially just doing great, and unbelievably talented. And, you know, Jay Z’s still the king. I mean, you know, he’s got a track record. Same with Kanye, so there’s a lot of talent out there, but when I look at who’s breaking new ground, Kendrick and Chance, those guys are doing just amazing work."

Quick News

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Bruce Springsteen said he plans on releasing an E-Street Band-less album in 2017.  He said: "It's a solo record, more of a singer-songwriter kind of record. Pop records with a lot of strings and instrumentation. So the record is somewhat in that vein."

Following their historic reunion at Riot Fest, Misfits' Jerry Only spoke to Rolling Stone about the possibility of new music with the classic line-up. He said: "I want it to continue. I know Doyle wants it to continue. I know Glenn wants it to continue. We just have to be big enough people to make it continue. And that's where we're at. Whatever it takes. We're going into our 40th anniversary so the timing couldn't be more perfect. Eventually, Doyle's got to write a new album; I've got to write a new album; Glenn's got to write a new album. Why don't we work together and make the greatest album ever? Now we've got different elements. We've got Doyle playing more of a metal kind of thing. We've got Dave who we're trying to figure out what the fuck he's doing. And Glenn's got his own thing. And Acey [Slade, second guitar] fills in good too. And I've got the band where it is today. So it's a matter of remolding and using all the different elements that I've got." The bassist added: "I think it's got to evolve naturally. The thing is we've tried to plan things and then we stand there and wait and as it comes we'll just do it. When we go back – I don't know about Glenn – but I canceled our touring and everything for this so I'm going to go home and write and lift."

Kid Cudi took to Twitter to announce that he is releasing a double album at some point this month. He wrote:

The Weeknd has said that his forthcoming album will be influenced by The Smiths, Prince, Bad Brains, Talking Heads and DeBarge. Speaking to VMAN he said: "The production feels aggressive but still sexy. The Smiths, Bad Brains, Talking Heads, Prince, and DeBarge play roles. We wrote it all in Los Angeles. I think it’ll be the best-sounding album I’ve ever done. It’s hard to label the sound because, when I first came out, nobody would label it R&B. I just want to keep pushing the envelope without it feeling forced.” No word as to when it will be released.

During an AMA on The Guardian's website, Fatboy Slim aka Norman Cook, was asked if The Housemartins would ever reunite. He said: "We agreed when we split up, in Bloom's Hotel, Dublin, 1988, that we would never reform. Five years ago we all had lunch together and reiterated that fact, with the caveat that we would only consider reforming if the Smiths reformed, which will only happen when the royal family abdicates."

Jimmy Eat World have been slowly letting out info about their new album, Integrity Blues, which arrives next month. The Arizona band have now released the cover of the record, take a look:

Great Soundtracks: 'The Wedding Singer'

Before Adam Sandler made shit films, he once wrote and directed very funny, clever features that had audiences riveted. One of those gems was 1998's The Wedding Singer. The film, which was about a wedding singer who falls madly in love with an unattainable woman in the 1980s was a slice of the decade. While the film was a nostalgia trip, the music helped bring it all to life.

In a soundtrack that featured New Order, David Bowie, Culture Club, The Smiths, The Police, Sugarhill Gang, Elvis Costello, and many more. It became a fan favorite and even inspired a second volume of music which came out later that year. The second volume featured Depeche Mode, Madonna, The Cars, Spandau Ballet, and others. Both of the soundtracks made the decade of glam and new wave come alive again for a whole new generation.

Morrissey has written a new album but is in search of a label to put it out. The former Smiths frontman told Isreal's Walla: "It is not possible to find a recording deal, so we would record it ourselves as soon as we can find a distributor who could make it available worldwide. There was a time when the music industry served the artist, but now the artist must serve the music industry... which is why everything is now so tasteless. Nowadays, everything is controlled and monitored so there is no chance of a singer who wants to be released to expose political opinion."

Sad news, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore has been canned by Comedy Central. The last show will be Thursday.

The Shins have announced that their new album is done BUT it won't come out until next year. Frontman James Mercer told Portland radio station KBOO: "“I’m really excited about this record... I think we’ve got something that Shins fans will really love, and I think there’s some other things on there that are different enough. I made a concerted effort on certain songs to fit the palette, to use the palette that I’ve used historically for the band. I think it’s really strong. I think lyrically, I’m better than I ever was. And I think my songwriting is stronger than it ever was.”

Prophets of Rage have announced details of their debut EP.  The EP titled, The Party's Over, will be out later this month. Take a look at the tracklisting below:

Faith No More will reissue their debut We Care A Lot in August. It will contain the remastered album as well as outtakes and B-Sides. Original singer Chuck Mosley said in a press release: "With We Care A Lot, I always felt like I was part of something new and different than anything else out there at the time. It made me feel privileged to be a part of it. The other guys were so cool, and there was so much camaraderie. And that came across in the music; Bordin’s drums battling it out with Billy’s bass in antagonistic harmony, Roddy’s melodic atmosphere, swallowed up by Jim’s crunchy metal riffs. I found my place somewhere between them all, and when the album was finished, it didn’t sound like anything else."

Nick Cave and The Badseeds will release their new album, Skeleton Tree, in September. Take a look at the cover, below:

His wife posted on a GoFundMe page to help pay for medical bills that "he has no quality of life and cannot work." She wrote: "There is no known cure and no reliable medical treatment. To give you an idea of what he’s dealing with, cluster headaches are nicknamed ‘Suicide Syndrome.’ The headaches come randomly, with no warning, at all hours of the day and night; but for him, they are much worse at night. The intensity of the nighttime headaches is so great that he yells, cries out, groans, and sobs — repeatedly, every few minutes, for most of the night. He can’t work. He has no quality of life. If you call him and ask how he is, he will say, ‘Everything’s okay,’ because that’s just how he is. But everything is not okay." For more information and ways to donate, click here.

Great Soundtracks: Pretty in Pink

The 80s had a sound that was all together daring, experimental but above all, innocent and nothing captured the sound of the decade better than the soundtrack to Pretty in Pink. The classic music to the John Hughes motion picture will turn 30 next month and to celebrate we picked it as our Great Soundtrack.

With music from Echo and the Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, The Smiths, New Order, OMD, INXS, and others, the record captured the entire essence of what the film was about, what the decade was about and most of all, what the youth were about. Thirty years later, a majority of the bands are still listened to and now considered legends and eve contenders for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the benchmark this soundtrack created proves why it is a timeless masterpiece.

Quick News

Chris Cornell has confirmed to Rolling Stone that Soundgarden will release a follow-up to 2012's King Animal. The band will work on their new album once the singer is done with his "Higher Truth" solo tour.

Morrissey will release his first fictional book, List of the Lost, next month. This is the former Smith's front man's second book following his 2013 autobiography.

Megadeath frontman Dave Mustaine was famously fired from Metallica in 1983. The band's then had a war of words that would last decades until they made up in the 2004 documentary, Some Kind of Monster. The reconciliation has allowed both parties to perform and tour together. So, when asked if Mustane would ever rejoin Metallica given the chance during a recent Twitter Q&A, he said: "I would be honored, but I would not."

Earlier this summer, Pete Doherty said that the newly reformed Libertines were going to work on the follow-up to their soon-to-be released new LP "As soon as possible." Now, when asked about Doherty's comments, bandmate Carl Barat told NME: "I don’t know. Cor, one step at a time, Martin. I have no idea really. I don’t really think outside of my head for more than 40 seconds at the moment. It’s for good reason, really. I don’t want to jinx it by making plans, but absolutely. That’d be a lovely thing."

Following the success of the N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton, Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon is calling for a Wu biopic. Raekwon told Hot 97: "When we make a Wu movie, bet your ass it's gonna be serious because we gotta tell the truth. I think that's what I love about the Straight Outta Compton movie is that they told the truth. When we do get to that level and it happens, it has to be the real story. It's gonna be an interesting one, cause I said - RZA hit the lotto one day. He knew who he had, but he didn't know what he had. So let's keep it right there."

Speaking to NPR, Twin Shadow discussed the bus accident that happened earlier this year that almost sidelined his career and life. He said: "I think my phone rang, and I reached for it — and right in that moment, I just was thrown across the room and kind of landed with everything that was in the back lounge on top of me. There was a couch that had flipped on top of me, a mattress had come off the bed and was on top of me ... The first thing I realized was that I couldn't pick myself up with my hand, then [I remember] looking at my hand and seeing the bones sticking, kind of making a teepee out of my hand."

Run the Jewels performed at FYF in Los Angeles over the weekend and brought out their friend and famous L.A. resident, former Rage Against the Machine frontman Zach de la Rocha to perform "Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)." Sure, they have done this before but then El-P goes and posts the biggest tease of all when he took to Instagram to post a pic of Run the Jewels with Nas and Zach. This leads many to speculating that they are collaborating on RTJ 3. Take a look below:

The 1980's may seem like an eternity but the music still sounds as fresh and as vibrant today as it did then. When something is a classic it never goes out of style. This is depicted in the 2014 book, Mad World by Lori Majewski and Jonathan Bernstein, who like Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain before them wrote Please Kill Me -- the oral history of punk, wrote the oral history of New Wave.

The book features interviews from members of Duran Duran, New Order, The Smiths, Tears for Fears, Adam Ant, Echo and the Bunnymen, Devo, ABC, Spandau Ballet, A Flock of Seagulls, Thompson Twins, and INXS.

Featuring an intro by Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran and an afterword by Moby, this book will transport you back in time and make those that lived through the scene remember and those that didn't bring them to a place that now only exists in memory.
