BEAUTY: New at the Drugstore Spring 2016

With each new season comes the greatest of gifts. No, not your crippling allergies or an excuse to buy new clothes. I'm talking new drugstore makeup! Not that the industry needs a reason to give us new or limited edition products, but they do seem to love a seasonal release. I can't resist every new thing that catches my eye on an endcap at Walgreens.(Believe it or not, I am only human, though I'll let you know when I grow my unicorn horn. Hooves crossed!)

Having picked up some newbies here and there with a plethora of coupons mixed with sales, I realized I had a bit of a haul to share, and what am I here for if not to share my overly specific opinions on things you've never asked me about? I do what I can.

Let it be said: NYX makes some of the best damn liquid eyeliners in the drugstore - nay, the world! My ride-or-die everyday liner is the NYX Collection Noir Liquid Black Liner, and all the things I love about it are captured in the Vivid Brights line: a thin, flexible brush tip, opaque formula, and smooth application. I wouldn't necessarily classify these shades as vivid and bright, though. They're great colors (the full line contains 9 rainbow-spanning shades) and add a pop to your eyes, but I was expecting these to be VIVID and BRIGHT, but they're more like vivid and bright, you know? Still, I love 'em and their all day staying power so I'll reach for them when I need a little oomph on my eye.

Around this time last year, I was shouting my love for Provocalips from the rooftops (assuming, of course, that a blog post and vigorous texting with my sister are the modern day equivalent of rooftops). I'm in love with this stuff! No other lip color has ever lasted as long or as well on my lips. Plus, it's like stupid cheap and available basically everywhere. I'm done trying to convince you; honestly, it's your loss if you sleep on this stuff. What you do need to know, though, is that three new shades are now available, and the two I've purchased are just as great as the rest. The other new shade is a deeper berry color, but it looked too similar to Kiss Fatal for me to pick up.

I feel like I'm in high school again! Why? Because that's the last time I consciously purchased a CoverGirl eyeshadow. I love me some CoverGirl 3-in-1 foundation, but their eyeshadows usually leave me underwhelmed, with the exception of the eyeshadow single Disco Ball, which I wore almost exclusively from the late nineties through the early 00s. So much glittery fallout, so little time. Sigh. ANYWAY, I kept seeing swatches of this palette and was shocked how good it looked. It's obviously an attempt at a Naked 3 dupe, but these are nowhere near Urban Decay quality. I found that the shades swatch well, but lack some of that pigmentation when applied with brushes, which is a bummer, and no matter what colors I used my eye ended up a bit muddy looking within a few hours, even with an eye primer. Not a total miss, but not the drugstore beacon I was hoping for.

Here we have two products that I couldn't feel more differently about! First, the Jordana: this is a typical liquid lipstick, but what stood out to me was how very matte this looks when it dries down. It's almost chalky, but in a good way? It's surprisingly comfortable for just how matte it is, and lightyears more comfortable than, say, the ColourPop Matte Lips. Raspberry Tart, pictured here, is the perfect cool toned pink that my collection was missing. Bonus: the doe foot applicator has a little scoop shape so just enough product comes out. It's the little things.

Okay, bummer of all bummers: Moscow, this lovely midnight blue shade of Soft Matte Lip Cream, suuuuuuucks. Yes, I meant each and every one of those u's. Don't get me wrong, I love the SMLC line, but this shade is a streaky mess. Lack of pigmentation is one thing, but you can't even build the color up without cracking or wiping off the underneath layers. I tried a navy eyeliner as a base, and that too was rebuffed. This is the lipstick that does not want to be worn. There are so few cheap and accessible blue lipsticks that this is a real loss. Moscow, we hardly knew ye.

This is my first nail tattoo purchase, waterless or otherwise, and it was on a complete whim, but I'm kind of loving how simple these are to use. You just cut around the design, peel it from the backing, press it on your nail and seal with a topcoat. They have great staying power and look lovely over a bright polish base or on naked nails. The roses are fun, but not 100% my jam, so I'm impatiently waiting for some new designs to be released.

Have you found any great new products lately? Can you point me in the direction of the best blue lipstick? How many rose-themed manicures do you think I can realistically get away with before people start to talk?

BEAUTY: Revlon Lip Haul

Because I'm a patient and savvy shopper, I sometimes take my time trying out new beauty products that everyone is raving about. Until about a month ago, I was still waiting out a "good deal" on Revlon Lip Butters, partly because I'm stubborn, but mostly because I'm kinda cheap. I get a set price in my mind of what I think something is worth and when a product exceeds my mind's estimate, I stalk it like it's my prey until a sale puts it within my sights. Enter: the CVS annual beauty clearance! Every year they pop those bright and wonderful little clearance stickers over just about everything in the beauty department and I come running, ready for lots of mental math and internal debates.
I get a literal chill from clearance stickers like these!

Super Lustrous Lip Gloss in Coral Reef, Super Lustrous Lipstick in Va Va Violet, Colorburst Lip Butter in Cherry Tart, Colorstay Mineral Lip Glaze in Perennial Pink

Once I try a product and love it then I know it's worth the cost. Until then, I have to wait it out for sales so unbelievable that I can't afford not to buy a million lip glosses that I don't need, you know?

I wouldn't say I'm super loyal to one drugstore brand, but I tend to gravitate toward certain brands for certain things - I like Revlon lip stuff and eyeliners, Covergirl mascara, Maybelline for face stuff, etc. When I saw all these beautiful, bright clearance stickers in the Revlon lip section, my hands were so full so fast that I was pretty sure people were looking at me. Wait, no - make that 100% sure because I saw the look of suspicion from the CVS beauty staff person (the woman who appears to walk aimlessly through two aisles hoping someone wants to consult on some serious makeup business which just does not happen at CVS, it seems) and looks of horror from some mom-types as I grabbed every stickered item I saw JUST IN CASE.

I got all this stuff for about $8.00 total, which is insane and I deserve a serious pat on the back, but maybe also you could massage it because I'm really into that.

Here's The Haul:
Colorstay Mineral Lip Glaze in Perennial Pink
This is a classic pink that would work for everyone, with just a hint of pearly shimmer. Nothing terribly exciting, but useful. This is the Carnation Pink Crayola of lip glosses - no one's fighting over it, but it really gets the job done when you just need to finish off that garden scene. Wait, what? I've gotten off track here. This stuff stays put for hours and is surprisingly un-sticky, so bonus points for that!

How It Looks On:
Like your real lip color, just better!

Super Lustrous Lip Gloss in Coral Reef
I'm kind of a sucker for orange lip products because they're a little different and artsy, but still easy enough to pull off every day. This one was super shiny and stayed on well, plus the packaging has gold accents so that you feel fancy when reapplying, even in a grungy bar bathroom, or at least I assume.

How It Looks On:
Please ignore my soaking wet hair. Nice pop of orange, and pairs especially well with my Fergie Wet n Wild eye palette!

Super Lustrous Lipstick in Va Va Violet
The twelve-year-old inside me (metaphorically!) will always love purple lipstick. I used to rock a frosty lilac shade on the reg in sixth grade (when I wasn't wearing metallic silver...badass!) and I still find myself drawn to it. This one is super dark and vampy. The formula was a little dry for me and it was hard to get even coverage. I felt like everyone was looking at my lips thinking "awww, poor little goth girl doesn't know how to grow up!" but I felt like a teen witch (ultimate goal in life) so I didn't really care. My boyfriend asked if I'd eaten a popsicle, so make of that what you will.

How It Looks On:
Pretty serious business. I decided to not wear other makeup because this was a whole lotta look.

Colorburst Lip Butter in Cherry Tart
I FINALLY GOT MY LIP BUTTER, GUYS! I've been coveting that little cross-hatched case for what feels like my entire life (maybe like a year). I think this shade is discontinued, but there are a bunch of others that are similar. I hear good things about Wild Watermelon. This one got a review of "I like that stuff on your mouth" from my boyfriend. I won't go on and on about it because literally everyone else on the internet has already done that, but this stuff is as good as they say it is! Soft, smooth and good color. Get some!

How It Looks On:
What's up, mouth? None of my full face shots came out well enough so here we are. Bonus points if you also match your lips to your earrings.

It's not included in this haul because I (clutches pearls) PAID FULL PRICE, but I'd like to point out that Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain is everything that is important in this world. This stuff goes on soft like balm and stays that way (how?) but also gives nonstop coverage for literally hours. Plus, it's in a twist up crayon so you don't need to sharpen it or anything barbaric like that. I know I sound like an ad, but this stuff makes me feel like a walking billboard. I wore this all day and all night and then I slept in it (don't judge) and woke up, to my surprise, with pink lips. We are finally using science in the right ways. Phew.
I have it in Smitten because that's the best. I'm also eyeing Rendezvous.

Have you found any great lip products lately? Did you score any amazing deals at the CVS beauty clearance? I love hearing about how much people save because I am weird. Has the Just Bitten balm stain changed your life too?

p.s. This is not sponsored in any way, I'm just super obsessive.

xoxo,
Michelle

BEAUTY: ELF Lip Haul

Soooo, I went a little crazy on ELF lip products when they recently offered a $1.99 shipping sale. Since not everything in their product line is available in stores (or at least my stores) I'd been eyeing a few things on their website, but needed an extra push (like cheap shipping!) to make me pull the ordering trigger.

I love the quality of pretty much all of their products and with their low prices and cruelty-free practices, this is one brand that I never feel guilty about stocking up on. All of this stuff was about $17 with shipping! Kind of unreal.

Retractable Lip Brush
This is a handy tool with sturdy bristles that fits well on my lips and stores easily when capped. Love it!

Lip Lock Pencil
This works like a reverse lip liner in a sense; you apply it just outside the lip line (on skin) to lock in lip color and keep it from bleeding or feathering. It's great to use when you don't have a matching lip liner, too.

Essential Lipsticks
This basic lipstick line is a great value and the formula is really moisture-rich. The colors pop and glide on easily, but these do need to be reapplied periodically, as they don't have a super long wear time.

L to R: Captivating / Flirtatious / Sociable

Essentials Lipstick in Captivating

Essentials Lipstick in Flirtatious

Essentials Lipstick in Sociable

Matte Lip Color in Rich Red
This is a twist up crayon with a sharpener hidden in the tail end. It's really easy to apply, both because of the soft, creamy formula and because of the slightly pointed tip. I outlined my lips and then filled it in for a full matte red lip.

Lip Stain in Crimson Crush
This stain looks and feels like a marker so it's easy to apply, but can also be a little messy. I liked the shade of red this gave my lips, but I wouldn't consider this a real stain because it came off a little at a time over the course of the day while eating, drinking, etc. I would definitely recommend exfoliating your lips before trying this out because the product settled more in some dry spots on my lips and left a bit of a ring around my lip line when it started to fade. Store this product tip down for easier use and a longer life.

Moisturizing Lip Liner in Natural Blush & Bitter
These are basic lip liners that get the job done and they each came with their own little sharpener. I opted for a dark merlot shade (Bitter) to use with my similar shades of lipstick and a light pink shade (Natural Blush) which matches the shade of my natural lip color, since I can use that with any lipstick. Smooth color and easy application makes these a great addition to any makeup bag.

I'm happy with my order overall, and I'm looking forward to trying out many, many new lip looks in the near future. I love when you don't have to spend a lot but you get a lot in return!

xoxo,
Michelle
