«Motivational Monday: It's Horrible»

I admit, I've been waiting for most of the year to use this one. Joking about something is the best way to get over it. I mean really... It's been 9 years. Yes, it was a horrible tragedy. Stop dwelling on the past, stop quibbling over petty things like the mosque. Just get over it and MOVE ON!

It's Horrible / But I can't stop laughing

«Worst Disaster?»

What's the worst environmental disaster in history caused my humans? The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that has yet to be stopped, or the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine, 1986? Bhopal disaster in India?

Or something else? What would you say is the worst?

«Everything is Going to Kill Everybody»

So a couple of weeks ago I happened across an article on Cracked.com that was a sample chapter in a book called Everything is Going to Kill Everybody. I don't remember how I came across it, I don't follow Cracked.com.

After reading that, I determined it was worth getting. I have a morbid interest in doomsday, so the book fell in line with my sense of humor. For the entire 2 years and 105 days I've been doing my blog, I've only read 21 books. Yeah, I'm that bad... I do my reading online.

A few of the disasters covered in the book are a bit unrealistic, like the hypercane or verneshot. The part about robots pointed out a bunch of new technologies that are more-or-less harmless by themselves, but when combined you get an overemotional flesh-eating monstrosity. Why would such technologies be combined? Well why would accelerometers, cameras, and clocks be combined? They are such different technologies, yet they are useful when combined. Just look at the iPhone.

So it will be with other technologies like the EATR (Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot). It can eat bio-matter (like plants or meat) to power itself. How cool would it be to have a lawnmower that feeds itself on the very grass it cuts? Of course, meat is the most efficient fuel for the EATR, so it might rather eat you than your lawn...

The book also covered other more mundane doomsdays, like the asteroid Apophis that will buzz past Earth closer than our geosynchronous satellites in 2029. Depending upon the small gravitational effect those satellites have on it, it has a very good chance of colliding with Earth on its next pass in 2036. It'd be like the dinosaurs all over again. But perhaps by then the supervolcano we call Yellowstone National Park would have already killed us.

It really was a hilarious book, in a frightening non-fiction sort of way.

I finally delved into the Amazon Associates program, so the link to the book here is a referral link. Amazon.com handles all the transactions, so it's not like you have to trust me with your credit card number. I figured since I have to declare my blog as a business on my taxes, I may as well act like it is one!

1: The two books I read are Everything is Going to Kill Everybody (duh), and The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

«Iceland Ash»

Usually this meme tries to make the USA look bad by showing fast food and a fat woman on the USA side, and some thin hot chick on the Europe side. But seeing as all of Europe is under Iceland's ash cloud and nearly all European air travel has been restricted, this is appropriate1.

There was an off-color joke about Poland's Air Force One accompanying this image, but I think I'll leave that out. I'll continue with my Las Vegas photos on Tuesday (the 20th).

«Another Earthquake»

What's with all the large earthquakes lately? Haiti... Japan... Chile... There's been some serious movement of the tectonic plates lately, hasn't there1? At least Japan and Chile are more prepared for earthquakes, so even though the one in Chile was vastly more powerful, it didn't do as much damage. Makes me wounder when the next big one will hit the US2...

*ominous voice* And this is only the beginning... 2012.

1: Actually, if you look at a list of sizable earthquakes by year, this year is progressing no differently than years past.
2: Probably will happen in Alaska, out somewhere away from a population center so it won't even make the news.

«Pareidolia (Image Heavy)»

As I said in a previous post, pareidolia is the tendency of humans to see faces on random objects that don't actually have a face.

Here we have a simple faucet, yet you can clearly make out eyes, a nose, and a mouth.

«Only Americans Matter»

Plane Crash in China Kills 3 Americans

Does the wording of that bother anyone else? You see this same thing when children are involved, too. If there were any children on that plane, that's what they would have focused on. Bonus points if it's an American child. They even made sure to point out that one of the injured is also an American.

Who cares if they were American? The point is 3 people died, and 4 are injured right?

Sort if a tangentially related subject: when there's a suicide bombing, why don't they ever include the bomber himself in the death count?

«Mythbusters, Landslides, and Gmail, Oh My!»

The Mythbusters were in town between January 31st and February 5th. I knew that they were going to be in town, but I didn't know exactly when until they were already gone. So I didn't have a chance to meet Adam and Jamie. They were working in the shop up at the high school. I heard they did an assembly for the students after someone slipped them a note under the door. They didn't let too much information out about what they were doing, but it has something to do with a pykrete boat made of newspapers. I think the episode is due to air in April.

In other local news, yesterday morning there was a major landslide here around 8 AM. It happened around 5 miles North. Just North of Walmart for those of you who know the area. It blocked the main road with house-sized rocks, and undercut a house above it. They're still clearing it. Yesterday afternoon they managed to clear enough of one lane to allow people to pass every half hour.

And on a less interesting note, I spent some time yesterday reorganizing my Gmail.

I usually keep a pretty tidy inbox, and even all my archived mail have labels attached to them. However, I went through and tried to clean a little out of my dreaded catch-all "Other" label. When I can't decide what else to label an email as, I slap on the "Other" label. I also redid a few of my filters, added a few new ones... The main bulk of my email sorts itself into the correct labels thanks to the filters.

The email address in my About Section ends up in my gmail account, and goes through the same sorting process too. In fact, I've set up its own inbox using the new multiple inbox feature in Gmail Labs.

«Shopping Carts With a Vengeance»

Last night we had a bit of a wind storm. Maybe 60 mph? Definitely not as strong as I've seen before. They were calling for 70 but I think they lowered it a bit. Heavy rain came with the storm, as always. Wind driven rain droplets sting your face, that sort of thing. Of course, I just had to go to the windiest place I could think of. It's down on the waterfront in town, on the water side of our mall by the Safeway store. I tell you what, that would be the perfect place for wind turbines. It seems like it's always windy there.

I was standing down there just at the edge of the building so I was shielded from the wind and rain. I was watching the waves, garbage flying around, and the shopping carts blow around in the parking lot (and crashing into parked cars). I even saw one chasing a car. The cart was gaining on it, but the car turned before the cart hit it. Then the shopping cart slammed into a curb and fell over.

There was one power outage caused by a falling tree, but didn't affect the part of town I was in. I'm told it fell across the road near Ward Cove and there was single lane traffic while they cleaned it up.

Got to love fall weather in Ketchikan.
