#OneDrive: Use Files On-Demand – with Convenience Options I have published an article about optimizing file management with Group Policies:   1⃣ What is OneDrive Files On-Demand and how to use it: OneDrive Files On-Demand is a feature that allows users to see files in Windows Explorer without downloading them to the local device. Users can choose different states for their files, such as local available, always available, or online-only, to optimize storage space and network load. 2⃣ How to manage files and sync with group policies: Microsoft provides several group policies to control the usage of OneDrive Files On-Demand and automate the storage optimization process. These policies include enabling or disabling the feature, setting the sync cadence, and configuring the cloud content dehydration threshold. 3⃣ How to work with the Use Files On-Demand OneDrive group policy: The Use Files On-Demand group policy allows administrators to enable or disable the feature for the organization. The feature offers several benefits, such as saving local storage space and minimizing the impact of syncing on the network. The feature is only available for Windows 10/11 users with version 1709 or later. 4⃣ How to use Storage Sense for automatic cleanup: Storage Sense is a feature that can automatically delete some of the user's files to free up disk space. It can be configured with group policies, such as allowing or disabling Storage Sense, setting the cadence, and specifying the cloud content dehydration threshold. Storage Sense can also delete files in the Downloads folder, temporary files, and Recycle Bin. 5⃣ How to work with Storage Sense settings on different devices: I recommend enabling Storage Sense globally, setting the cadence to daily, and setting the cloud content dehydration threshold to 3 days. This means that files that have not been opened for 3 days and have the status local available will be converted to online-only. Files that have the status always available will not be affected by Storage Sense. 6⃣ How to change file states with CMD or PowerShell commands: The file states of OneDrive Files On-Demand are controlled by attributes in the NTFS file system. It is possible to change the file states manually or automatically with CMD or PowerShell commands.
