In his latest blog, CEO Jim Islam reflects on this year's Brighton & Hove Pride campaign theme: “We love because they can’t”. The campaign is raising awareness through education about the harsh realities faced by the LQBTQ+ community in countries with oppressive laws, as well as building support that will advocate for human rights worldwide. #Pride #BrightonAndHovePride #BrightonPride #HumanRights

    Chief Executive Officer, OneFamily

This weekend is Brighton & Hove's Pride festival - a glorious and joyful celebration of diversity in the city. It's a wonderful expression of the freedoms that we are lucky enough to enjoy in this country. It has a proud history of campaigning and this year is shedding light on the progress that's to be made globally. It’s a horrifying reminder that members of the LGBTQ+ community are still suffering human rights abuses and face being criminalised, tortured or sentenced to death in many parts of the world. Nearer to home we need to protect and nurture the freedom that we have; freedom that has taken activists over 50 years to achieve.  But, it's fragile and we need to hold it gently in our hands...... We're pleased to see that Martin Lewis' open letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, includes two of the changes we've been campaigning for. Firstly, we support his call to reduce the lifetime ISA (LISA) withdrawal penalty for all first-time buyers. Our recent research of 2,000 18-40 year olds revealed the withdrawal fee as the second most-common reason to not take advantage of a lifetime ISA, with the most common reason being the fact their money would be inaccessible in an emergency. Secondly, we agree with Martin Lewis that the government's promise to assess the curriculum and consider the possibility of making financial education compulsory in all schools is a positive step. Earlier this month, we conducted research into 14-17 year olds' attitudes to money. Of the 1,000 teens we spoke to, 63% think that schools should teach them about budgeting, 53% are worried about how much life goals cost and 34% told us they find thinking about money stressful. Martin Lewis' letter is available here: https://lnkd.in/e6DNHKQf

    • Chart showing top reasons for not considering a lifetime ISA among those who wouldn't consider one:

I need to be able to access my savings in case of an emergency (25%)
The penalty for early withdrawal is too high (24%)
It sounds too complicated (23%)
I can't afford to save (22%)
I don't want to tie up my savings for a long period of time (20%)
I don't want to buy a house/already have one (18%)
I can't commit to regular saving (17%)
The government incentive isn't high enough (12%)
The property price cap is too low (9%)
Saving for retirement is not a priority (8%)

Director of Protection at Beagle Street, Ryan Griffin, has written in FT Adviser discussing how millions of people are at risk of being without the financial support they’d need if a loved one were to pass away. Beagle Street's recent report estimated the average baseline financial impact of the death of a family breadwinner across England, Scotland and Wales would be £195,000 over 10 years. #LifeInsurance

Thank you to Building Societies Association for sharing Customer Operations Director, Jackie Davies' blog on the cost-of-living crisis and its impact on young adults. Jackie explores how the priorities of 18-40 year olds have changed, pointing to our recent research which found that the average cost of getting married, buying a house and having children in the UK is now almost £395,000.

BSA associate member OneFamily, recently carried out some research to find out what young adults want out of life and how the cost-of-living crisis is impacting them. The research shows adults between the ages of 18-40 are having to make tough choices about their priorities and the more “traditional” paths are falling way down the priority list because of affordability. Jackie Davies, Customer Operations Director at OneFamily, discusses the impact of rising costs on young people, how it’s stopping them from achieving ‘traditional’ life goals and what financial services companies can do to help. OneFamily has long campaigned for updates to the Lifetime ISA - something the BSA has also called for - to bring it up to date and fit for purpose by updating the price threshold and reducing the withdrawal penalty. #costofliving #savings #ISAs #supportingmembers #MutualsinAction https://lnkd.in/gfGx3GBb
