    What's life like at Bray St.? Here's a lovely behind-the-scenes look from Oscar Rimmington who recently joined us for some work experience. Before he headed back to school, in true Bray St. style, he wrote up the top 5 things he learned from his week with us. They ranged from hearing about all the different types of marketing from our Account Director Hollie Ingram to gleaning expert storytelling lessons from our freelance Copywriter and Editor Nicky Rampley-Clarke. Not to mention getting a graphic design 101 from one of our freelance designers, Chantelle Dalzell, and getting immersed in all things branding - of course - with our Founder and Managing Director Daniel Dagher.     ⭐ Earlier this month, SOLshare received the 2024 Keeling Curve Prize in the Energy category for our innovative smart e-mobility solution, SOLmobility. 🔍 But what is the Keeling Curve Prize? What is its purpose and what does it mean for SOLshare to be recognized as one of the winners? 🏷️ Named after the graph depicting CO2 concentrations in Earth's atmosphere over time, the Keeling Curve Prize (KCP) is an exemplary initiative by the Global Warming Mitigation Project (GWMP) that recognizes climate innovations working to pull this curve downwards. 💵 Every year it awards 10 innovations across five categories worldwide with a $50,000 prize each to further expand their decarbonization efforts and contributions to combating climate change. The winners are chosen from applicants hailing from over 100 countries representing emerging markets, resource-deprived and marginalized communities. The prize supports disruptive climate innovations with financial resources to scale and reduce global emissions. The Energy category seeks solutions that are decarbonizing energy and promoting clean energy for equitable access through smart utility-scale grids, mini-grids, and off-grid solutions for marginalized communities. ⚡ 💡 SOLshare won the award for its e-mobility solution SOLmobility, which replaces lead-acid batteries in electric three-wheelers (E3Ws) with smart tech-integrated lithium-ion batteries, reducing carbon emissions while boosting driver incomes. The KCP will be crucial in scaling our efforts to establish Bangladesh's first Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Connected into VPPs, the current 5M E3Ws have the potential to buffer 30% of the current national peak load.     The secret to success for tech start-ups? It's not that they're super nimble or led by tech geniuses. It's because the successful ones are those that are "obsessed" with finding unconventional solutions to difficult business problems. But they also have a specific corporate culture. "[It's] about creating a culture that is fast-moving, free-flowing, argumentative, autonomous, evidence-driven and pretty egalitarian. That's the goal," Andrew McAfee, Principal Research Scientist at the MIT Sloan School of Management, told Harvard Business Review in a podcast. According to McAfee’s book, The Geek Way: The Radical Mindset That Drives Extraordinary Results, the culture has 4 must-have features: 1. Science - make decisions using evidence and data 2. Ownership - everyone in the organisation has a sense of ownership and autonomy in their work 3. Speed - iterate and be agile 4.     Some fascinating data to explain why your branding efforts are anything but a waste of time and money. And listen up - it's as relevant to B2B as it is to B2C! Branding is about putting and keeping your business at the very front of people's minds - i.e. being mentally available. A successful brand will be able to trigger a positive, emotional connection that cements its place in your mind - whether or not you're already a customer. And this is important because, as the LinkedIn data shows below, customers are far more likely to choose the brands that are mentally available, than go to the effort of evaluating a list of suppliers. As Andy Lambert sums up: - 86% of B2B buyers begin their process with a specific list of suppliers in mind. - Typically only 3 suppliers feature on this list. - The vast majority (92%) end up choosing from these 3 suppliers.     👇 This is why 'maximising mental availability' is our number one job in marketing... - 86% of B2B buyers begin their buying process with a "day one" list of suppliers in mind - There are typically only 3 suppliers on this "day one" list. - 92% of buyers end up choosing from these 3 suppliers (!) We've often heard that buyers make up their mind before engaging a supplier, and this data supports that. So what can we do about it? To be the 'first to mind' when our target customer goes to market we need: - A heavy investment in 'brand' marketing. (If we're only targeting those that are already looking for solution, it's likely we are already too late.) - Distinctive brand assets. (eg. a strong POV on our problem space & personalities representing the brand) - Deep empathy with our target customers. (This comes from a true understanding of the problems our customers face and involvement in the same communities/events). Remember, even in complex B2B purchases, the decision is rarely made with absolute rationality. Never underestimate the role that an emotional connection plays in decision making.
