Over the last few months, our Emerging Supplier Manager Rachel Prenty and the team from the New Zealand Food Innovation Network have been all over the motu, from the Waikato to Wellington, hosting a series of nationwide forums to help emerging grocery suppliers set themselves up for supermarket success. And we’re not done yet! We’ve still got forums in Nelson, Queenstown, Christchurch, Levin, Hastings and Gisborne to go, head to our registration page where you can find out more and sign up to attend. Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/gasgnn9F These forums are just one of the ways that we support suppliers on their growth journey, whether that’s through events like our Foodstuffs North Island Emerging Supplier competition or resources like our supplier handbook. Any supplier looking for support or advice on how to get onto supermarket shelves, please get in touch. It's not every day a former Olympic athlete and Commonwealth bronze medalist leads your local grocery store, so Red Beach - you're in for a treat! 🏅 😀 Former Black Sticks hockey player Andrew Hayward is now the proud owner operator of Four Square Red Beach, and we’re so excited to have him on the Foodstuffs North Island team. This week we brought the New World Wine Awards judging event to the beautiful Hawke’s Bay for the first time. 🏆 It was the perfect backdrop on our quest to find the Top 50 wines under $25, and a great chance to meet and work alongside some of Aotearoa’s top wine talents too. We were joined by 26 expert judges from around the country, including leading and emerging young winemakers. Each judge blind tasted around 100 wines per day to get through the more than 1,280 entries, while our incredible stewarding team worked to ensure every sample was poured and delivered in perfect condition. #Cheers to all involved, and #watchthisspace for the October announcement of the New World Wine Awards Top 50 under $25 to see which wines came out on top. #newworldwineawards Chris Quin Catherine Tardif Jo Allan Lindsay Rowles Jonathan Box Cindy Chaimowitz Wendy Hammonds Simon Kennedy Jocelyn McCallum Sandy Botterill Andrew Gaukrodger Willa Hand Carmen Sutton David Stewart Dominic Quin Lindsay B. In New Zealand, pumpkins are grown as an annual crop, planted in spring and harvested in autumn, just in time to enjoy a wide range of warm, comforting winter recipes. It's good news for pumpkin lovers with one of our favourite winter vegetables having seen a significant price drop, down 57% in June compared to the same time last year, according to the latest Stats NZ FPI data. Crown pumpkins, one of New Zealand’s most popular varieties with its large size offers a huge amount of value for customers at the moment due to great growing conditions over the past year. Unearthed Produce is a local supplier of pumpkin for Foodstuffs North Island’s New World, PAK’nSAVE and Four Square stores. General Manager, Ben Buchanan says that this year's pumpkin crop has made a good rebound after last year’s weather events impacted the growing season. Cutting up a whole pumpkin can be daunting, but if you work smarter, you won't need a super sharp knife or big muscles to get the job done. Here’s a great tip to make the job a lot easier. Before cutting up the pumpkin, use a knife to poke a few slits around the outside of the pumpkin skin. Next, pop the whole pumpkin in the microwave for about five minutes. Microwaving will soften the skin, making the pumpkin much easier to cut! We’re looking forward to providing the Commerce Commission with our response and submissions to its ‘statement of unresolved issues’ on our proposed merger with Foodstuffs South Island. In case you haven’t seen them previously, here are 10 reasons why we back our merger proposal 100%, and why we believe it’s the right thing to do for New Zealand right now. We reckon these 10 reasons are supported by lots of other evidence too – like PAK’n’SAVE being named New Zealand’s second most trusted brand, our ongoing strong relationships with our valued supplier partners, our two-year fight against food price inflation, and 99% of our local grocers voting yes for the merger back in June. We’ll continue to engage positively with the Commission through this process to resolve the issues. An adaptogen is not something many of us have heard of, but ones like L-Theanine and Ginseng are not only reported to help reduce stress, anxiety and fatigue, but also believed to provide mood lifting properties too. The idea to add them to a delicious new range of non-alcoholic cocktails sparked a new business for Kiwi engineer Paul Duncan. Hear more about Paul's story and his Elta Ego range, supported by our Emerging Supplier Manager Rachel Prenty, and now available in 35 New World stores across the North Island. The Foodstuffs co-ops have recorded another month of deflation at our stores in the same categories as Stats NZ's food inflation ‘basket’. For the year to June, the co-ops recorded an average year-on-year decrease of -0.5% across our 500+ stores, while Stats NZ’s also recorded a deflationary nationwide rate of -0.3%. It’s the fourth consecutive month both rates have been below RBNZ’s inflation target of 1–3%. At the same time, we saw an average 2.4% rise in what suppliers charged in the same food categories, while Infometrics recorded a 2.7% rate for all products in its Grocery Supplier Cost Index, which covers a wider set of 60,000 products the co-ops sell.
