IITA-CASSAVABREEDING is pleased to announce its strategic partnership with Agbeyewa Farms, aligning with our collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing farmers' access to newly released cassava varieties throughout #Nigeria. Recent demand creation trial evaluations conducted at Agbeyewa Farms, in conjunction with IITA staff, yielded positive feedback from farmers regarding the new varieties, which exhibited remarkable yield performance after harvesting. At the recent IPAO Ekiti Farmer's Field Day, IITA showcased its innovative participatory approach to cassava variety assessment by actively involving men and women smallholder farmers in our variety evaluation and selection processes. By co-designing solutions tailored to address farmers' cassava production challenges and selecting robust, high-yielding varieties, we are committed to ensuring that advancements in cassava improvement translate into high-quality food products. Our approach of integrating research directly within the farming community not only enhances the visibility of participatory breeding progress but also facilitates practical applications, thereby fostering sustainable livelihoods within the cassava farming sector. For those interested in further information or potential collaboration opportunities, we invite you to connect with us. #aginnovation #participatoryresearch #sustainablefarming #cassavabreeding #FarmersFirst

Do you know molecular biology is not limited to agricultural research only? Here at the IITA Bioscience Center, we recently concluded hands-on training in molecular biology techniques for the second batch of our July cohort and have significantly enhanced the trainees' practical knowledge of molecular biology and its applications across various fields of life sciences. We are inviting participants across different fields of life sciences to join us for the September cohort for a life-changing experience! Remember to come fully prepared to strike a balance between your theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge of molecular biology techniques. Send an email to the lab manager Yemi Fajire at ty.fajire@cgiar.org to book a slot. Do not miss out on this incredible opportunity to invest in your future We look forward to seeing you in class. 🌍✨ Thrilled to have participated in the 2024 African Caucus Meeting in Abuja, a powerful gathering of African Ministers of Finance and governors of the World Bank and IMF. It was an honor to moderate a high-level panel on “Leveraging Partnerships with MDBs.” During our discussions, we emphasized the importance of: - Strengthening regional integration - Facilitating sustainable development - Addressing critical infrastructure inadequacies and limited access to finance - Overcoming barriers to trade - Promoting inclusive payment systems and economic diversification These elements are vital for driving industrialization and fostering true regional integration across Africa. A key takeaway from our panel was the need for Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) to enhance their investments in agricultural innovations to ensure food and nutrition security across the continent. By focusing on innovative technologies and sustainable practices, we can tackle challenges head-on and create lasting impacts. The panelists brought invaluable insights as we explored strategies to build effective partnerships that will ultimately benefit African economies. Together, we can pave the way for a prosperous future! Thank you to everyone who contributed to these meaningful discussions. Let’s continue to work together towards a brighter, more inclusive Africa! 🌱🤝 #AfricanCaucus2024 #Partnerships #SustainableDevelopment #RegionalIntegration #MDBs #Innovation #FoodSecurity

Breeders often struggle with accurately estimating the costs of breeding programs, leading to undervaluation or overestimation 🌱💰. This challenge often stems from a lack of awareness about proper costing methods 🚀 The Breeding Costing Tool from the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) and The University of Queensland, #Australia empowers users to estimate the cost of crop breeding and related research activities, enabling breeders to allocate resources more effectively ⚖ The software calculates the expenses for running a crop breeding activity or an entire breeding pipeline, using data such as a year's worth of prices, costs and salaries 🛠 In two weeks, #AcceleratedBreedingInitiative will host a Costing of Breeding Operations Workshop in #Nigeria, in partnership with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) Umudike, Nigeria 👨🎓 Participants will learn to proficiently cost breeding operations and enhance cost-effectiveness through optimization. They will also have the opportunity to cost at least one Target Product Profile within their pipeline, to further support their network Intrigued? You can also freely access the tool and tutorials below 👇 🔗 UQ Breeding Costing tool: https://lnkd.in/eJnU7na 🔗 Costing of breeding programs webinar: https://lnkd.in/d8xaEfXx 🔗 Presentation: https://lnkd.in/dx7qdpPk

📣We had the honour to celebrate the official opening of the Soil Health and Fertilizer Hub at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) headquarters in Ibadan, Nigeria🇳🇬. It’s crucial to recognize that healthy soil is the foundation of climate-smart farming. We celebrated the official opening of the Soil Health and Fertilizer Hub at the IITA headquarters in Ibadan, Nigeria. Dr. Robert Zougmore, the Regional Coordinator for West Africa at Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA), joined us for this momentous occasion. In his speech, he underscored the longstanding challenge of context-specific fertilizer recommendations in Africa and emphasized the pivotal role of the hub in addressing this issue. The Regional Hub for Fertilizer and Soil Health for West Africa and the Sahel was established to provide technical assistance for developing and implementing investment plans in fertilizer and soil health, driven by the needs of individual countries across the region. It focuses on improving soil health and fertility through best agronomic practices, enhancing resource efficiency, building climate resilience, and conducting capacity building at various levels. #Fertilizer #SoilFertility #SoilHealth #FSHHubLaunch #WestAfrica #Sahel International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI) UM6P - Mohammed VI Polytechnic University The World Bank (Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project) International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)
