🇮🇩 The Indonesian government has signalled its commitment to improving the sustainability of its agrifood systems. A new study, commissioned by FAO and developed by researchers from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), IISD, and Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel uses an innovative modelling approach to generate insights and recommendations for agrifood systems transformation efforts in Indonesia and inform the Indonesian Government’s development planning. 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gxxXM8Bj

Average crop yields in much of Africa lag far below their agronomic potential. This is the case for coffee grown by smallholders in Uganda—agronomy experts estimate they could more than double their yields by applying optimal management practices. A new IFPRI study finds that providing agronomy training to farmer groups and disseminating recommendations via mobile phone can be a cost-effective way of achieving this target. Director of Communications and Public Affairs at International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)
#ICAE2024 Past IAAE Presidents (three of them with present and former International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) affiliations!) speak about the future of the agricultural economics profession. Prabhu Pingali: we need to address global challenges with new tools. What do you anticipate? Joachim von Braun: 1. Stronger focus on demand side, 2. Links of food systems to health, environmental systems, 3. Sustainable bioeconomy. Johan Swinnen: future profession will be more diverse! Women move the discipline in new directions, i.e. international development, nutrition, consumer preferences. We need much more research from developing country authors, decolonize agricultural economics. Will Martin: need to broaden base of the discipline. Greater off farm focus and increased focus on natural resources. Immense potential for economic insights to improve nutrition. Robert L Thompson: important future for the economics of agriculture, food systems and natural resources. Land and water constraints are staring at us, enormous climate change challenges. Need to build bridges to non economic experts - ag, environmental, chemical and other scientists. Don’t spend all your time in academia, have stints in government, private sector to have a greater impact. @Kei Otsuka: 1. ag economists should contribute to global food security by facilitating international technology transfer; 2. Pursue high value revolution; 3. Develop agro processing industries; 4. mobilize science for climate change mitigation. #IFPRI #CGIAR
