CGIAR #IntheNews 🌿India has witnessed a significant but lesser-known maize revolution. Maize production has more than tripled, reaching over 35 million tonnes. Unlike wheat and rice, only a small fraction of maize is directly consumed by humans, with the majority serving as livestock feed and contributing to industrial uses such as starch and ethanol production. Innovations like the waxy maize hybrid, supported by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), have improved ethanol yield, marking a pivotal advancement in maize breeding and utilization. 📰CGIAR #IntheNews Kenya's rice production meets only 11% of domestic demand, but the Komboka rice variety offers a solution. Developed through local and international research, including contributions from the International Rice Research Institute, Komboka resists drought and disease and yields more than traditional varieties. John Gitau, a contracted seed multiplier at Bura Irrigation Scheme, expects a substantial harvest from his 10-acre field. With meticulous farming practices and support from the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), Gitau aims to improve the availability of high-quality rice seeds and contribute to food security.
