🌍A transformative project in Mali aims to combat peste des petits ruminants, a highly contagious disease threatening sheep and goats worldwide. Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) introduces a new thermotolerant vaccine developed by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the Central Veterinary Laboratory, and Hester Biosciences. This innovative vaccine withstands high temperatures, protecting 1 million sheep and goats across 35,000 households. Unlike wheat and rice, only a small fraction of maize is directly consumed by humans, with the majority serving as livestock feed and contributing to industrial uses such as starch and ethanol production. Innovations like the waxy maize hybrid, supported by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), have improved ethanol yield, marking a pivotal advancement in maize breeding and utilization. 🌊New research from the CGIAR Initiative on NEXUS Gains highlights Ethiopia's crucial need for lake conservation. This study provides the first comprehensive account of long-term water surface area changes in major Ethiopian lakes. Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT emphasized the importance of improved monitoring to manage water resources effectively. The study urges conservation efforts for lakes facing significant water loss, such as Abiyata and Chamo, and recommends bathymetric surveys for expanding lakes like Abaya and Hawassa.
