Please join us in welcoming another new teacher to our growing community! "My name is Sophie Nicholls and I am delighted to be joining RSJ in September as Teacher of Geography and Personalised Learning. I hold a degree in Geography from the University of Nottingham, where I also completed my PGCE. I am currently undertaking the NASENCo qualification and a PGCert SEND in Oxford. I have a passion for ensuring education is inclusive and meets individual learning needs. I am looking forward to working alongside the personalised learning team at RSJ. I am excited about moving to Japan, a country renowned for its rich and varied geographical features. Geography helps students develop critical thinking skills and understand the complexity of the world around them. I am looking forward to sharing my passion for Geography with the pupils at RSJ. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy sport, and I am looking forward to contributing to the vast extra-curricular programme offered at RSJ. The ethos of shaping the whole person resonates with my personal educational philosophy.” #RugbySchoolJapan #NewTeachers #SchoolCommunity #thewholepersonthewholepoint #britisheducation #boardingschool #Tokyo #Japan #GeographyTeacher

David McNally will be joining the expanding Mathematics Department at Rugby School Japan. A very warm welcome! "I read Mathematics and Statistics at Newcastle University before retraining a decade later in Mathematics Secondary Education at Edge Hill University. For over a decade since, I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching GCSE & A-Level Mathematics internationally, in: Jersey, Cayman Islands, United Arab Emirates and Switzerland. Alongside my passion for Mathematics is an equally strong enthusiasm for watching, playing and coaching a plethora of sports; most notably: cricket, tennis, rugby, football, golf and chess. Before my career in education I'd worked in various roles across the NHS and whilst teaching Mathematics I have taken on numerous roles across all the schools I have been fortunate to work at. In all cases I believe that a pragmatic and logical mind has been essential to the problem solving required to efficiently deliver objectives. An affinity for the methodologies of Mathematics as a taught subject enhances one's ability to develop such a mind; and, whatever their future holds, the students that endeavour to improve these skills will then find them invaluable. I am excited to join Rugby School Japan to assist students expand such qualities and flourish as a whole.” #RugbySchoolJapan #NewTeachers #SchoolCommunity #thewholepersonthewholepoint #britisheducation #boardingschool #Tokyo #Japan #mathematicsteacher

We are delighted to welcome Lizzie Butler to our growing Humanities Department! "Lizzie has taught geography for 15 years in a range of schools across London and the UK. She worked as a Geography Teacher Consultant for many schools around London to support their Geography departments and teaching. She is passionate about geography as a subject, and spends holidays searching out great real world Geography such as volcanic lava pools in Nicaragua! She is also passionate about international development, having worked for an education charity in Zambia and Uganda, and currently serving on the board of directors for a healthcare charity in Malawi. Having spent a year in Japan already, she is looking forward to spending more time at the school and working with its fantastic students." #RugbySchoolJapan #NewTeachers #SchoolCommunity #thewholepersonthewholepoint #britisheducation #boardingschool #Tokyo #Japan #geographyteacher

Music is another integral subject and also activity within the co-curricular provision at Rugby School Japan. Welcome to Mr Sach-Keen who is joining our Music Department. "Greetings to everyone at RSJ! I’m Matthew Sach-Keen and I will be joining Rugby School Japan from September as a Teacher of Music. My background as a musician is based in classical performance which I studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, specialising as a violinist. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to play at many of the UK’s major concert halls including the Royal Albert, Royal Festival and Birmingham Symphony Halls with conductors including Sir Mark Elder and Edward Gardner. I continue to play in orchestras whenever I have the opportunity and enjoy performing with students as well as adults to help encourage young talent! As an educator my aim is for my students to build a deep love of music both as a rigorous practical and academic discipline. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching music is to see students develop their own personal musical interests and find joy in expressing their ideas and building friendships through their creative endeavours. I look forward to seeing the students in the classroom and to exploring a wide range of music together as listeners, performers and composers!” #RugbySchoolJapan #NewTeachers #SchoolCommunity #thewholepersonthewholepoint #britisheducation #boardingschool #Tokyo #Japan #musicteacher

Rugby School Japan opened its doors in September 2023. As the school grows, so we are delighted to welcome more teachers to our thriving community! "Hello, I'm Ms. Karppinen, and I'm thrilled to join Rugby School Japan as your new art teacher. Currently, I am the Head of Art and DT at a secondary school in London, and I'm also completing an MBA in Education Leadership. Originally from Finland, I grew up in Singapore and Beijing, which makes me particularly excited to return to an international school setting similar to my own upbringing. I am particularly excited about starting a printmaking extracurricular club. Japanese woodblock printing has always captivated me, and I can't wait to explore this art form with my students and see the incredible pieces they will create. I am looking forward to sharing my passion for art and fostering creativity in this wonderful community.” #RugbySchoolJapan #NewTeachers #SchoolCommunity #thewholepersonthewholepoint #britisheducation #boardingschool #Tokyo #Japan #artteacher

A warm welcome to Mr James Brooke who will be joining the Rugby School Japan History Department in September! "After a journey that has taken me from Newcastle (UK) to Surrey, and then onto Singapore, I am very much looking forward to this next stage in Japan. An avid rugby fan, I have kept a keen eye on Rugby School when I became aware of its intention to open in Japan, whilst I was visiting the country for the 2019 World Cup. I have had many hugely enjoyable trips to Japan since that World Cup and in that time was excited by the developments from the school and all they achieved during this first year of operation; a mix of Rugby School and Japan was a perfect combination. I am excited to start and to teach History to young, bright and inquisitive students.” #RugbySchoolJapan #NewTeachers #SchoolCommunity #thewholepersonthewholepoint #britisheducation #boardingschool #Tokyo #Japan #HistoryTeacher
