The Country Session on Sri Lanka held by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce at the CII BIMSTEC Business Summit highlighted Sri Lanka’s participation in BIMSTEC and its interest in engaging more proactively with the group and its member states. With a focus on Sri Lanka’s economic resilience, key industries discussed were food processing, pharmaceuticals, and logistics. The session touched on opportunities in Sri Lanka’s food processing sector in areas such as sugar, spices, and tea. Additionally, opportunities in the pharmaceutical sector of Sri Lanka was discussed, with emphasis on increasing Sri Lanka’s presence in the healthcare value chain. Furthermore, opportunities in the logistics sector was discussed with emphasis on Special Economic Zones and Multimodal Transport Solutions. Finally, the session also touched on Sri Lanka’s strategic location in the BIMSTEC region and the high quality talent pool in the country. The session on “Strengthening Cooperation in the Services Sector” during the BIMSTEC Business Summit delved into various subsectors of cooperation within BIMSTEC. The session highlighted the importance of collaboration in tourism (circuit and adventure tourism), digitally delivered services that do not require physical interface between producer and consumer, media, technology, healthcare, education, and skill development. It also underscored the need for sustainable management practices and enhancing tourist experiences. Exploring possibilities for public and private partnerships and exchanging experiences were encouraged. The discussion also focused on newer areas such as cooperation on digital public infrastructure and data localization within the region. The session: Creating a Seamless Ecosystem for MSMEs in the Global Value Chain at CII BIMSTEC Business Summit 2024 was held at New Delhi on 7 August 2024. The session focused on the constraints faced by the MSMEs in the BIMSTEC region such as lack of adequate finance, regulatory complexity, inadequate infrastructure and deliberated on the solutions for such issues. Some of the solutions offered during the session include the need for skill development, accepting the safety standards of trading partners within the BIMSTEC member states, and capacity building programmes. The role of private sector participation and creating a conducive environment for nurturing MSME were also discussed. The session was chaired and moderated by Ashok Saigal, Co-chairman, CII National MSME Council and Managing Director, Frontier Technologies Pvt. Ltd.
