0380 Cube House upstairs family room

Well here it is, I don't know why we've waited so long to look at the Cube House's upstairs studio space, perhaps the most significant outcome of its interesting 2+3 story organization. If you recall the living room of this house is very high, with a story an a half space for a loft like living area. Above the living room is this studio space which is also a story and a half tall, and when combined with the living room equals the three stories on the other side of the house. The Cube House master bedroom is on the rear side of the second floor. It has a sliding barn door entry, which actually opens all the way up onto the stair landing. This is where the central stair of the Cube House begins - off the dining area next to the kitchen and living room, just down the hall from the entry foyer. Here is a view of the entry foyer from the Cube House design. It has a freestanding cabinet that has a coat closet and a shelf with mirror right by the door. The question is how do you have open plan living when your house is a cube with a square plan with a stair in the middle of it? The Cube House does it by wrapping your open plan around the stair! So the Kitchen and dining are are on one leg, and the living room makes up the entire rest of the other leg. How about the rest of the donut? Home office, laundry and bathroom. Here it is - the central stair tower of the Cube House. If you've been reading along here you remember that the Cube House has 2 1/2 stories on four different levels and they are all connected by this winding central stair. 0380 Cube House this is how its put together

From the outside the Cube House presents facades with an assortment of window sizes and locations which may not make obvious what's going on inside, so we're here to shed some light on this. The house is 2 1/2 stories - now that does not mean the top floor has a 4ft ceiling. What's going on is the Cube House is 2 stories on one side, and 3 stories on the other side. Right? So the one side has the entry foyer and home office, and laundry room and kitchen dining rooms, with bedrooms above on two levels, and also a roof deck. While the other side has the living room and the family room above which are both a story and a half tall - with like 11 ft ceilings, high like a loft like space. 0380 Cube House is that cube house thing

Cube House is a sort of slang for a modern house. If you google it you'll find people talking about "cube houses" as a way to describe a type of house that we all understand as modern or contemporary. Sort of strange, but I love it! The Cube House is our answer to this strange phenomenon. High loft like living spaces, bedrooms wrapped around a central stair core, this is one cool cube house! Cube House Construction Prints Complete

That's it, the Construction Prints are complete - one more design available!

We are happy to announce that the Construction Prints for the 0380 Cube House are complete and available now. We are very pleased to have it available and look forward to seeing it realized. The completion of this plan crosses another milestone as the anniversary of our 2nd year online slipped by unnoticed. Back in January 2003 we had promised to extend our introductory discount till we had six different plans complete and available. We are very proud that this day has arrived as the 0380 Cube House is the sixth complete design. It is not that we are eager to raise the price, we are just very happy to have at least a rudimentary selection of different designs that can begin to address a variety of different living situations. There is now some choice, and from the beginning creating choices for people who wanted modern houses was our number one goal. The introductory pricing will remain until the end of December for those who care to take advantage of it. Starting in 2005 our two year grand opening will finally come to an end!

Cube House progress III

Most of the drawing is done. The Section sheet of the 0380 Cube House was completed yesterday, but for reference marks which will come from the Wall Section sheet when it is done. So all that is left to draw is the Wall Sections. I felt like I had slipped behind schedule with this but now I'm pretty confident it will be done by the end of December as I had hoped. This remains a big goal for us as this will be the sixth complete set of plans. I still think it is a meager selection for somebody looking for a house, but it is at least half way to a decent selection, and I'm pretty happy about that. Here are the finished sheets so far - the floor plans, the foundation and roof plans, the elevations, the building sections.

Cube House wall sections

The last sheet is blocked out. Tonight I finished blocking out the wall section sheet. I will return to noting and dimensioning the other drawings before I flesh this drawing out - it will be the last to be finished. I have also done the building section sheet since I last posted but I seem to have skipped posting an image of that, no matter. So, a bit more than half way done I'll say.

Cube House elevations

The elevations for the Construction Prints are drawn. I have been slowly making progress on all the basic sheets, the plans, elevations, and sections. The plans are more or less done and awaiting notations and dimensions. I have just finished bringing up the elevations to the same point - see the image below. The sections are next. The elevations for the first time in our Construction Prints will be in full color with a toned backdrop created from the 3dmodel of the house. I am enthusiastic about this as color really has a lot of power to clarify and convey information. This new technique is a real win/win as it is a time saver and results in better drawings.

0380 Cube House elevation sheet

The elevation sheet is set up now. I've stayed up too late to finish blocking out the elevations tonight - the posting date says its 21Oct but where I'm sitting its 22Oct! As with the sections I am generating these directly from the 3d model saving some time in development. I often refine the proportion and location of windows while creating the model and I usually have to update the original model templates with these changes when I begin the Construction Prints. This new process eliminates that coordination effort. And so the layout of the elevation sheet. Thats it - the main sheets are all set up and I'll start developing them up now.

0380 Cube House section sheet

Usually the elevation sheet comes first, but the section of the Cube house is so interesting that we were anxious to do it. The unusual cross section of the 0380 Cube House is what inspired us to tackle laying out the section sheet first. There was not room to show 4 sections on the sheet as with the basement there each section drawing was too tall - the elevation sheet neatly fits all four sides. Rather than show 2 sections on a sheet I decided to do two sections with the basement truncated and the section through the stair showing the entire basement. And yes, before you ask, we can prepare versions with slab foundations or crawlspaces as well. We are trying to leverage the work already done in the 3d model now by exporting the base lines for the section drawings directly from the 3d model. It saves drafting time and provides a better representation of a section through the house via all the detail in the 3d model.

0380 Cube House goes into Production

Construction Prints for design 0380 The Cube House are officially under way. 0380 The Cube House is in our Stealth House Group as it is intended to fit on the narrow lots found in older neighborhoods and fit comfortable amount the tall victorian and craftsman style houses found in many older neighborhoods. Just as with the other projects covered in the blog the first step is to rough out all of the sheets in the drawing set. the floor plan sheet the roof and foundation plan sheet In this case the foundation will be documented as a full basement, with crawl space or slab foundations a simple modification

blogs are back up and running!

After a few weeks of downtime the LiveModern blog tools are back online! We have been away from the blog for a few weeks so we have a number of loose ends to catch up on. We left off with the completion of the 0367 Porch House Construction Prints. It was completed in mid August and the status was set on our site to "Prints Available Now".
