Sunrise
We had a fantastic sunrise yesterday morning, so I thought I'd share it with you.
Not much that I need to say about it, is there?

We had a fantastic sunrise yesterday morning, so I thought I'd share it with you.
It's been a while since we've seen the sun in the morning. It seems like it rained for at least five days straight, and has been overcast and grey. Yesterday afternoon was nice and sunny though, in that wintery way.
Two of my favorite things about winter: bare branches and being able to see more sunrises.
Awoke this morning expecting it to be cold, and was not disappointed. About 10ºF (-12ºC), which makes it the coldest morning of the winter so far.
It's been a cold start to winter for us in the Midwest this year, as temperatures are about 10ºF (-12ºC) below normal and have been for the most part of a few weeks.
It's been a long time since I've had a sunrise worth watching or photographing.
We experienced a cold snap this weekend to interrupt our mild winter, and although it was only here for two days it reminded me of something important.
One thing I always look forward to during the coldest parts of the year are the sunrises. Winter sunrises are always so beautiful to me, when the cold sky is mostly clear except for a taste of clouds near the eastern horizon.
As 2011 ends and the next calendar year begins, I'm reminded that as impressive as many of the human-created celebrations and spectacles are, the ones provided by the natural world will put us in our places.
As we move into the colder, darker part of the year, I get to see and photograph more sunrises. The location of the sun as it peeks over the horizon, the time at which it does so, the almost-constant presence of clouds -- all of those things combine to let me see mornings like I never seem to be able to during the summer.
Sunday morning I woke up too early -- much, much too early. The clock said 4:00 AM, and I was wide awake. I knew this was going to be a problem later in the day so I tried for about 30 minutes to fall back asleep, but it wasn't happening. Reluctantly I got out of bed and went to the computer. Read a few blogs, perused the day's headlines, looked through some old photos, and played some computer games. After two and a half hours on the computer I got bored and hungry, so made my way upstairs.
As I was looking through my photo archives to find a couple of specific images, I came across a few different images that never made it into posts. I also found a few older images (from before I started the blog) that I'd like to share with you today. I'll do this from time to time, as I have a more older garden photos that are worth sharing too.
I thought I'd finish off the year with a look at some of my favorite photos from 2010. Since I took a lot of photos this past year -- over 6000! -- I knew I'd need some rules when choosing or else I'd end up with 100 photos in this post. So I made two rules: 1) the photo must be related to the garden 2) I had to choose exactly two photos from each month.
A couple of mornings ago I was awakened by hungry cats, and upon making my way to the kitchen I noticed a strong glow from the east: a particularly nice sunrise!
