Catching Up: End of Summer

Since we're squarely in Winter's grasp now, it seems a great time to look back four to six weeks to appreciate the end of summer 2019.

Ah, those were lovely days, warm and sunny and dry. The perfect time to...

This is just a test post, please ignore.

If you can't help reading, this post is to test the last stage of my blog saving efforts.

Midweek Miscellany

Time again for collected snippets. It's not Autumn now, it's not! At least the weather agrees with me on that, as it will be 90ºF (32ºC) again today, and for the next few days. Humid too -- where's my dry September that I love so much?

Speaking of love, the deer are so comfortable in my garden, they must love it. I have mixed feelings about that as they walk around like they own the place.

The second capture: nothing to do with me

Yesterday I talked about catching mice. Little did I know that my post would have such far-reaching consequences, inspiring those around me to act.

I happened to glance out the window and noticed this pretty neighborhood cat that first appeared in my garden this summer. Definitely interested in something...

Going back, looking at cats

I tweaked my back recently moving a too-large load of soaking wet leaves, so I have no desire to go walking around the garden with the camera. Also last night I had a very strange dream about my cats shrinking, so I thought that I'd go "back" in time and collect my garden cat posts for you.

I loved it when I had stray cats hanging around in the garden watching me work, and the kittens were, well, kittens

Random tidbits from the phone

I was looking through the photos on my phone this morning and realized that I had quite a few things that were worth mentioning but didn't warrant a post by themselves. So they piled up.

Lumped all together though, there's some interesting stuff here. For instance, this photo of a small tree planting ringed by pavers at my mother's neighbor's house. Not really interesting in itself (and not very attractive in my opinion), but...

Cats love Agave?

You already knew that I have cats right? They don't venture outdoors after we adopt them, but that doesn't mean that I haven't learned some things about cats and plants. One thing I learned when Kumo wasn't yet ours...

...is that cats really love bamboo. Not just rubbing against it, but eating it too. I love how cut bamboo looks in vases indoors, but that look doesn't last long because the branches immediately turn into a cat salad bar.

It grows, a melon

I have abandoned my veggie beds.  The tomato plants, beet greens, cucumbers and melons are now for the deer -- since they've been helping themselves this summer anyway. I've realized that the place where my edibles grow is just too far from the house to be on my mind much. You can't even see it from the deck, and out of sight, out of mind.

Since I couldn't give up on growing food entirely, I put several containers of melons on the deck this summer (along with more potted herbs that have been there since the spring). Here's a look at them, as they advance from blossom to fruit.

Bug Tracks

Sorry, no post today. Too much watering, long business trip, etc. ate up my time.

Back tomorrow with more of our recent roadtrip!

Happy Christmas!

I hope you're spending time with friends and family, and are as content and comfortable as a stray cat in a protected corner of a friendly garden!

Cats love bamboo

One thing I learned late last summer is that although bamboo is certainly beautiful in the garden...

...cut bamboo canes also look fantastic in a vase indoors!

Favorite photos of 2010

I thought I'd finish off the year with a look at some of my favorite photos from 2010. Since I took a lot of photos this past year -- over 6000! -- I knew I'd need some rules when choosing or else I'd end up with 100 photos in this post. So I made two rules: 1) the photo must be related to the garden  2) I had to choose exactly two photos from each month.

It was pretty difficult to find two good photos from January and February (before I started this blog), and it was even harder to pick only two images from May, June, July and a couple of other months, but I stuck to it. Most of these photos have appeared in the blog, but some may have not.

Edit: I missed a month and had some mislabeled -- fixed now.

A cat of many faces

We have two stray cats that hang out around our garden these days. Both of them are extremely people-shy and won't let me get within 10 feet of them, even though they see me bringing them food all the time. They mostly hide in the bamboo and under the ornamental grasses, watching, and keeping a lookout for each other -- they do not get along.

This guy is Toe White. He's most likely the father of Super-Whitey's kittens. He may be owned by somebody in the neighborhood because I don't see him every day. Maybe he's got a wide "range" to patrol and it keeps him away for a few days a week. I don't know.

Garden cats showdown

These are the two cats that frequent my garden. On the left is Whitey, and Toe White is on the right. Whitey shows up pretty much every day, but Toe White is not around too often lately. These guys are the reason that Super Whitey has spent the last 6 weeks in my garage -- I don't want more kittens!

They do not like each other, and it appears to be time for a showdown.

Kittens!

Super-whitey doesn't have as much time to follow me around the yard right now, as she's a little bit busy these days:

Yes, we now have a couple of kittens! (They're about 2 days old in this photo.)

Meet the garden cats

I've mentioned before that we have a few cats that hang out in our yard, or at least visit once in a while. I believe they're all homeless.

Let's meet these cats who apparently have good taste in gardens. ;-)

This is "Whitey". (Remember that we give strays descriptive names only.)
