How to make it

  • Stir together hoisin, ginger, garlic, vinegar, soy sauce, and pepper until well blended. Rub marinade all over roast, coating it well. Place in a glass baking dish, cover, and allow to marinate in the refrigerator at least 8 hours, but preferably overnight.
  • Remove tri-tip from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Heat oven to 375°F. Blot roast dry with paper towels to remove some of the excess marinade.
  • Heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Sear roast for about 2 minutes per side or until nicely browned. Transfer roast to a small roasting pan or baking dish and place in the oven. Cook until roast reaches an internal temperature of 125°F for medium rare, about 20 to 22 minutes.
  • Remove roast from the oven and cover loosely with foil. Let rest for 15 minutes before carving. Slice tri-tip across the grain and serve.

    Tri-tip was on sale where I shop so I grabbed one. I had everything but the ginger so I made it without it. Mine was in the marinade for about 20 hours. I grilled mine on a charcoal grill six minutes each side. This was very tender and had a great flavor to it. I added a picture and a thread in IMI 1/18/14.

    Nice ingredients! I would probably let it marinate longer, but that would be about the only change. I'll have to post my tri-tip marinade too...hadn't occurred to me yet.

    I haven't seen a tri tip roast in many years and the markets around here don't carry them. I'll try to find one for this recipe but even if I can't, I'll use the recipe for other cuts of beef. Thanks!

    WOW! I've never seen a recipe include Tri tip before. My husband and family are from Southern California and they got me hooked on it. Hard to come across around here, most butchers locally chop it up to use for fajita meat or stew beef. When we do have it, we season it up, put it on the grill and cook slow. Then cut into strips and wrap in a warm tortilla.....DELISH! This meat truly melts in your mouth.
