With the juggernaut of Grand Theft Auto IV squeaking in at the end of April, May's game of the month contest was left wide-open. While there were no blockbusters on the level of Rockstar's opus, the month did see a bunch of interestingly quirky originals and ports of games from different platforms. From this pool we had more than enough choices from which to concoct a worthy Game of the Month list, one that won't be quite as easy to predict as last month's. So read on and see what got our nod as the best game of May 2008.

May 2008 Second Runner-up
Boom Blox (Wii)

When we first heard that famed auteur Steven Spielberg was preparing to dip his toe back into the videogame development pool, we couldn't help but get excited. After all, this was the man behind some of the greatest movies of our time, as well as one of the most intense WWII shooters ever made (let's not forget how awesome Medal of Honor was when it came out). However, when word came down the pipe that the game would be a casual Wii game in which you essentially played Jenga with your friends, we were more than a little disappointed. That sentiment changed once we finally played Boom Blox.

There's a lot more going on here than meets the eye, as you'll be treated to a wide variety of games that, at times, feel even more challenging than Hasbro's wooden classic. One game might task players with throwing blox at stacks, while another could have them pulling blox out while avoiding the explosive ones. While there's a surprising amount of depth to the single-player game, it's the co-op and head-to-head multiplayer offerings that really make this a worthwhile addition to your Wiibrary (sorry, couldn't resist).
