Yakushi Village

After the lengthy opening cutscene, you're in charge of the wolf. There are two demons nearby. Head forward and take them out with repeated attacks. Try to attack one at a time, rather than getting caught up in the middle.

When the battle ends, there's another scene. Your next goal is to climb a ledge (which you'll do automatically) and draw a big circle in the sky. When you're prompted, press the 'L' or 'R' button, then draw the circle on the bottom screen so that it is positioned in the drawing (just above the hut) like a sun.

Another cutscene follows, with instructions on general gameplay. You'll also receive the Sunrise scroll and word of your next destination: Kamiki Village.

Head left, across a bridge and down to lower ground. There, you'll meet with Ayame again, during a brief scene. Look along the bank to the left from there to find the Spirit Ink S in a treasure chest. Then cross the bridge and continue along the path toward the main village. An orange arrow will point you from there toward the right along another bridge (rather than straight to a barrier). Across that bridge, you'll find a sign. Read it if you like, then follow the orange arrow that points down toward the bottom of the screen. Across a bridge in that direction, you'll find some pots. Break them open to obtain an Ink Bottle and to reach another bridge. Cross it to meet with the Old Man character. He will hand over the Yakushi Village Map item.

Head down as directed by the arrow to emerge from a cave. Issun will note that now you need to go and see Sakuya. However, you've forgotten to do something in the village.

Return to the village, cross the bridge and continue straight ahead past where you previously read the sign. As you reach another mass of land, you will meet with a new character: Dr. Redbeard. To his right is an Origin Mirror, where you can save your progress. Do so, then follow the orange arrows again. They'll lead you out of the village (ignoring for now the existence of the doctor's hut) and toward new danger as your quest gets underway.
