Gathering Items (The Present)

It's worth noting that while you seem to be stuck 100 years in the past at this point in the game, you're not really. This is an ideal time to make sure that you've collected everything you need in the present and that you have completed every side quest that interests you in that time period, since you're nearing the very end of the game and won't have many opportunities to do so after the next dungeon. Find a save pedestal, such as the one in Shinshu Field, and you'll find that you can warp back to the present at will. If you'd like to warp to the present to pick up some items, now is the perfect time. Otherwise, skip this section and head straight for the Moon Cave.

If you're in the mood to hunt for treasure, start by visiting Yakushi Village. The Aristocrat character that you found in Sei'an City will reward you with some experience points now if you meet him on the high ledge along the back side of town. You can also head to the left from there to meet a shady merchant. Agree to pay 10,000Y and he will part with the Stray Bead, which is pretty much useless. Then he'll run off in tanuki form. Chase after him. Along a nearby ledge, you'll find a Retired Fisherman who will reward you with some experience points if you showed him the way to Yakushi Village previously. Head down to the lower level of the village and check the buildings on the lower platform beyond the save pedestal. You'll find the tanuki in the second of those two houses. It runs off again. Follow it to Dr. Redbeard's house. Then head to the upper level again, near where you met him the first time. The shortcut is to simply head right from Dr. Redbeard's house and then along the rooftops to the ledge where the tanuki is waiting. When you talk to him now, he'll return your 10,000Y and you'll also receive the Lucky Cat Paw for your trouble.

If you haven't already, you can obtain Divine Sake brewer on the lower right side of the village, near the stalls where you can upgrade your weapons and such. Then you can leave Yakushi Village and start toward the crossroads near Kamiki Village. There, you'll find a wandering pig. Talk to it and give it directions to Yakushi Village, then return to Yakushi Village and head to the high ledge along the back side of the village, near the waterfall. Talk to both the boar and the Aristocrat characters for experience point rewards from each one.

Now it's time to head outside of the village and explore again. In Shinshu Field, head across the bridge so that you're on the far side of the field, in the grassy area behind the sapling. Walk up toward the cliffs and there's an opening that you revealed previously to find a treasure chest. Enter that cave again and head to the far island, where a pile of leaves waits. Use Galestorm to blow away the leaves and reveal a treasure chest, which you can open to find Masterpiece Part 4. Now exit the cave and head up along the side of Shinshu Field with the high cliffs. Near the arches that lead down toward the beach where the Moon Cave is located, you'll find the Old Woman wandering around. Show her a map to Yakushi Village for some experience points. Head along from there to Agata Forest and look along the rock wall for the opening that previously you headed along to restore the area's sapling. Travel along that tunnel now to the clearing with the sapling and talk to the Forest Woman who you find there. Give her directions to Yakushi Village.

High on the trails leading up from the lower Agata Forest area, there's a pool of water that your characters remark is nice if you have them investigate it. Nearby, an enemy is circling a pile of leaves. Explore that area and use Galestorm to blow away the leaves and reveal a treasure chest. Open that chest for Masterpiece Part 4.

Now travel to Sei'an City. In the Aristocratic Quarter, just on the far side of the long bridge and in front of the shrine building, meet with the Investigator who was looking for his journals. You should return them now for a hefty reward of experience points. While you are in Sei'an City, head to the house just to the right of the Aristocratic Quarter's entrance. There, you'll find two chests. The left one contains the Holy Arrow and the right one holds the Dog Figurine. There are curtains along the left and right sides of the chamber, as well. Slice the curtains on the right side to reveal a chest that holds Lacquerware and the one on the left side to find Masterpiece Part 4. That should complete that particular Masterpiece. Head across the bridge to return to the Commoner's Quarter. Just to the left of the long bridge that joins the two portions of the city, there should be a character named Momotaro. He'll only be there if you have already invited a pheasant and a monkey to Yakushi Village. Talk to him and show him the map to Yakushi Village to send him packing.

Warp back to Yakushi Village now. Make your way up to where the Retired Fisherman is standing. You've talked to him before, but now you can find the Forest Woman standing behind a nearby tree. Talk to her, too. She'll thank you for pointing her to the village and you will receive the Letter. Deliver it to the fisherman, talk to both characters again and then exit the village to Shinshu Field. Return to town then and talk to the characters again. They haven't moved. When you talk to the woman, she'll reward you with experience points. The man will talk about going to see the Ryoshima Coast Guardian Sapling. Exit out to Shinshu Field again, then return. Head up to the waterfall and enter the cave behind it. Talk to the woman for still more experience points. The man will hand some over, as well. Leave town again and return a final time. There will be a new building along the rock wall to the left of the waterfall. Use Vine magic to reach that building's balcony. Along the left side, plant a Cherry Bomb to blast the weak wall. Enter the space beyond it to find a treasure chest. Open it for the Gold Pot. Now head back to the balcony and enter the house itself. Talk to the woman for yet another gift of experience points, then talk to the man for a final batch of experience points.

Now warp to the Southern Ryoshima Coast area. Look over to the road that follows the edge of the walled shrine area and you'll find an Old Man. Talk to him and show him the map to Yakushi Village. Then head to the village yourself. To the right of the save pedestal, enter the left of the two buildings (the inn). Head upstairs and then outside to see a couple of doors. Enter the middle one to talk to some animals you've rescued and receive some experience points. You can slash to reveal a treasure chest behind them that holds the Exorcism item. Leave that room and enter the area to your left. There's a chest there that you can open for the Divine Sake. There are people in the room, as well. Talk to them for experience points and then leave the village for Shinshu Field. Return to the village then and head back to the hot springs area where you just talked to the Old Man and the Old Woman. There's a new character there now, standing to the left of them. His name is Grimm. After you talk to him, leave Yakushi Village again, then return. Talk to him again and leave again, then return. Now Grimm will relate an odd dream he had. He'll ask to speak in private. Have Kurow get off your back, then talk to Grimm yourself and tell him about Ayame (you can't do so unless Kurow dismounts). After you do that and receive some experience points as your reward, let Kurow ride you again. Travel to the upper left side of the village and enter the hole in the wall there, just ahead of the bridge that leads to the waterfall. When you talk to Grimm now, you'll receive some more experience points.

By now, you should also have done enough that a new treasure chest is available in the village. Head up the bridge leading to the upper left from the save pedestal, then head down and to the right so that you're on the high ledge at the center of the village with a scarecrow on it. To the right from there, a bridge should now connect to a small floating island and there is a treasure chest on it. Open the chest to find the Masterpiece Part 5.

There's one more activity to pursue in Yakushi Village before you return to your proper quest. Assuming that you invited Momotaro to the village when you met with him in Sei'an City, you can find the lad by heading upstairs in the inn. He's in the room where all of the animals have gathered. Talk to him and Momotaro will ask for help finding his kibi dango. You'll receive a Manifest so that you can hunt down the treats. Travel to Shinshu Field and look for the enemies circled in red on the map. You'll find one on the far side of the river, on the bank behind the Guardian Sapling. That one gives up Kibi Dango A. The second one is up on the cliffs near Tama's Hut, where you got the fireworks. He'll give up Kibi Dango B. Next, head back across the bridge and then descend through the archway and start down toward the sand bar where the Moon Cave is located. Find and defeat the enemy waiting there to receive the Kibi Dango C. Now return to Momotaro for your reward.

If you've been following the walkthrough closely up to this point, you now have every item that you need ahead of the final few challenges. Go ahead and find a save pedestal so that you can warp back in time to return to your regular quest one hundred years in the past.
