Dragon Quest IX Side Quests

Where? When? Reward
Dourbridge Available as soon as you arrive in Dourbridge for the first time. Gold Coin

In-Game Description

"There's an old man in Dourbridge who needs something to stoke his fire. Anything will do!"

This is an easy side quest that you can complete as soon as you're able to undertake it. When you arrive for the first time at the mysterious town-full-of-drunks known as Dourbridge, you'll be able to find the man who will give you this side quest. He's an elderly man sitting near a fire on the western edge of the town. You'll need to traverse the rather strange layout of the town for a little while before you encounter him. When you speak with him, you'll learn that he needs some materials to keep his fire going. After all, he's quite old, and he doesn't want to catch pneumonia! He says anything will do. Anything? Is that right? Well, I think we can help.

Think back to early in the game. Very early, in fact. Remember the barn in Angel Falls? There, you would have found plenty of Horse Manure in breakable jars and the like. This mysterious item can be used in alchemy, but it also has a much more immediate use. Burning manure is an ancient way for humans to stay warm, and in this case, things will be no different. Opt to hand over some of the Horse Manure you've been carrying around for some time now, and the old man will burn it. It doesn't smell pleasant, but it gets the job done, and in return for completing your task successfully, the old man will hand over a lone Gold Coin. Well done!
