Memory – Zoids Fanfiction
Van knew he was dreaming when he looked at his father’s headstone and saw the wilting yellow flowers. Maria had planted them the day after their father’s funeral, over ten years ago. The dirt was loose beneath his fingers, as though it had recently been dug up and replaced. His hands were smooth and smaller than he remembered yet he recognised the tattered, old clothes he had long since grown out of. His cheeks were wet with tears.
He heard the soft pat-pat of footsteps on the stone path behind him, looked back and saw a young girl with incredibly long brown hair strolling across the grass. She struggled with the basket of papayas but managed to make her way slowly up the hill to the cemetery where he – no, where the younger Van – was standing.
“I thought I’d find you here,” she said.
Van hastily wiped the tears from his eyes with his sleeve but didn’t turn around. “What do you want Steph?” he asked cooly.
Steph bit her lip. “You know, my dad says boys aren’t supposed to cry,” she told him.
“I’m not crying,” Van snapped angrily. He looked around at her with fierce black eyes. “And who are you to talk, every time your dad goes away you cry like a little baby.”
Almost as soon as he’d said them, Van regretted his words. He hadn’t intended to sound so mean, but it was too late to take the words back. Slowly, Steph’s eyes began to water and she sniffled. “I do not!” she exclaimed.
Van rolled his eyes. “Yeah, right. Baby…” he teased, a nasty grin on his face.
The tears dried as they fell down her cheeks and she pouted, red-faced with embarrassment. It was always the way with Steph. First she would cry, then she would get mad at him for making her cry. “I’m so stupid for worrying about you,” she exclaimed. “I’m going home to tell Maria not to make you any dinner.”
With that, she turned on her heel and marched back down the hill, her brown hair swishing from side to side and the papayas wobbling unsteadily in the basket.
“What are you doing that for?” Van yelped, scrambling to his feet and running after her. “You know I don’t mean it like that. Come back!”
“Van. Van, wake up. Van!”
Van opened his eyes. What a weird dream, he thought. The unwelcomed sight of his tiny cabin slowly came into focus, and with it, Fiona, who was leaning over him, her garnet eyes filled with amusement.
“Wake up, lazy bum,” she cooed, flicking him on the nose. A low rumbled told him that Zeke was there also.
Van scowled, wondering why Fiona was waking him when his body obviously did not believe it was an appropriate time to be getting up.
Fiona sat on the edge of his bed, fully dressed in her pink shirt and shorts and twirling her long blonde hair around her
Gallery of Recent Digital Artwork
Here’s a gallery of the recent digital artwork I’ve been doing. Most of the linearts were done by Strayberry-Liger.

Storm-Liger
Strayberry-Liger and I have started up a collab account and called it Storm-Liger. It will host all our work together, starting with our Zoids fan characters and also where it will feature some new art for my upcoming novel.
And I suppose now is an appropriate time to mention our collab work… We’re going to collaborate on some zoids fanfiction, set a little further into the Guardian Force timeline with the next generation of characters. We already have a pretty big cast so far, which I will introduce you to in a minute. We’re thinking of doing a series of short stories, some of which you can find floating around Deviant Art and this blog that centre around the Guardian Force Academy we’ve created.
Click – Just a cute little scene with the GF Academy recruits. Jaina is my OC, and she’s Steph and Matt’s daughter. VJ (Van Junior) also belongs to me, he’s Van and Fiona’s third child. Mia and her son, Kurt belong to Strayberry-Liger.

Zoids Fanfiction Preview
Here’s a little preview of the work I’ve been doing lately. It’s accompanied by a few pages of manga made by Strayberry-Liger
Mourning A Friend…
Even Raven had been moping around the base like a puppy who’d just been kicked by its owner.
“Damn it, Van!” she cried out, slamming the wrench against Blade Liger’s metallic paw. “Why are you such a god damn idiot!”
Again she slammed the wrench down. The sound of metal against metal echoed through the hanger but she didn’t care. She hit it again, and again and again until she could barely lift her arm anymore and even then she persisted, screaming at him with every blow.
“You idiot! You’ve left us all behind!” The wrench cracked under the sheer force of the blows, but she hardly noticed it. “You left us … your friends, your wife and your kid and you don’t even know it!”
And when the wrench broke it two, she used her bare hands, slamming them with as much force as she could muster against the Liger armour. She didn’t even notice the nasty gashes that tore into her skin as she did so. “How dare you leave us behind?”
She yelled some more, and when her hands could no longer take another blow and her throat felt strained she fell to her knees and pressed her forehead against the cool hard metal of the Liger’s paw. “You weren’t supposed to die out there Van,” she sobbed.
It had been such a long time since she’d cried like this. Years of military training had left her with tougher skin. At first, she hadn’t been sure she had what it took to survive in the military. After all, what place did a researcher have on the battle field? But Van had pushed her, he’d helped her hone her skills as a pilot. When she felt as though she couldn’t go on, he’d gotten her through, and without him, she didn’t know if she could win this war.
‘I can’t do this alone,’ she thought sadly. ‘Van’s the real hero, not me. How can we win this without him?’
She didn’t know how long she sat there for, sobbing over the Liger’s charred paw.
She felt like she could just stay there forever and just cry until she felt a pair of big strong hands around her waist and she looked up to meet Thomas’s lime green eyes.
Then she looked down at herself and realised how much of a mess she was. Her clothes were covered in grease and grime and blood ran freely from her hands down her arms to her elbows.
“Thomas…” she sobbed.
He held her against him, stroking her hair. “Please don’t cry…”
She nodded numbly, burying her face in his chest. “You have to come back Van,” she murmured, feeling the tears run down her cheeks. “Can’t you see how much we all love you?”
Zoids Character Notes: Karl Schubaltz
Character notes are good references for whenever you’re writing. I’ve done this for fanfiction, but its good to do it for original characters too .
Colonel (formerly Major) Karl Lichen Schubaltz
Appearance:
Badges:
As he advances in rank, the badges on Karl’s uniform change.
Major: two bars on the left breast, the first being divided into six separate sections of alternating colour. The second bar is a solid yellow. Below these two horizontal stripes are three separate circles, from which drop three vertical stripes.
Colonel: a third horizontal green bar was added to the bottom of the initial two. In addition to this, a fourth dot and vertical stripe were added to the bottom.
Uniform:
Chaotic Century (taken from zoids.wikia)
When he first appeared in Chaotic Century, Karl was shown wearing a high-collared coat with thick, grey armour over his shoulders, accompanied by an angular plate rising up on each side. From each these plates hung red tassels over his upper arms. Over his hands, he wore loose, fingerless gloves that were pulled up to his elbows. His uniform folded over, copying a double-breasted style, across the right side of his chest, lined with a thin yellow strip. The pattern lacked one set of buttons, showing a total of three fasteners evenly spaced down the front. Near his hips, the uniform folded over a bit, bundling up above a grey belt, the two sides of which arched down. In the back, the coat reached nearly to his heels, as it sported a long tail. The front angled down as two separate strips of cloth, coming to two points near his knees before arching up again to his hips. He wore pants of the same colour and material, which ballooned out at his knees, over which rose the peaks of his grey boots.
Guardian Force:
In Guardian Force, Karl’s coat is modified slightly. The front separates from a cut coming down straight from his collar, where it had previously been made from over his left shoulder. The lining of the collar is redone, creating a small separate piece in the middle, whereas previously the collar had been joined in the middle with two simple yellow strips. His shoulder armour is modified, adding two golden plates beneath the initial grey armour. The red tassels now drop down from the second golden plate, a little lower on his shoulders. His belt is remodelled to lie straight across, and changed to match the colour of his uniform buttons, rather than the darker grey.
The Hat:
Karl’s signature accessory is his hat, coloured the same purple, with an unusually long visor, which often obscures half of his face. Strangely, the hat doesn’t show his unit insignia, but golden bars that form the shape of a "W" above his forehead.

Zoids Manga
So I went web hunting … (again ) and stumbled across the personal website of the guy who wrote the zoids manga, Michiro Ueyama. Since the series ended so abruptly, he’s done a short continuation online.
